Why does nobody want to write my will!

Aprilx · 07/11/2022 16:00

I cannot find anyone wiling to write my will. My AIBU is am I unreasonable for somebody to want my business in writing my will.

I have called four local companies today and they have all given me the brush off or promised somebody would call me back but nobody has.

I am 52 and in average health, I don’t have children so I would like to dictate where my estate goes, but I cannot find anyone to write my will. (I know I can write my own will, I would like my will lodged with a solicitor).

Why don’t you do it online? I have a pretty standard will and so did it with a company called farewill

JudithHarper · 07/11/2022 16:07

Keep trying to find a solicitor. If you make a mistake or something is not quite clear, you won't be around to clarify your wishes. It's not an area where you can skimp or not use professionals.

thesandwich · 07/11/2022 16:10

There is a mumsnetter @mumblechum I think who does them and has great reviews?

StrangerOnline · 07/11/2022 16:11

You called them TODAY… it’s not exactly urgent, and I think you are being impatient. There’s still another hour before close of business and does it really matter if they call you back tomorrow or even later this week?

HappyHamsters · 07/11/2022 16:11

Are any local solicitors offering a charity free Will service have they said why they are not able to help you

YABU to think a professional service form would give you a same day response for a basic will. Give them some time! You will probably hear by the end of the week.

TheWurst · 07/11/2022 16:13

Oh it’s also Will Aid month so they will be even more busy than usual.

Yabado · 07/11/2022 16:16

There is an online company called Farewill that will write and check your will

i used them for my dads probate and they were very good

mumblechum on here did my late parents will and it was all done remotely so very easy to arrange

Swampthing55 · 07/11/2022 16:16

I know two will writers if you want their details, I just called them and it will be new year before you got an appointment though. It takes several hours to go through properly.

AnImmenseDislikeOfPeople · 07/11/2022 16:20

You can PM me for details of my company if you like, but depends where you are in the country as to whether we would be a great fit x

maddiemookins16mum · 07/11/2022 16:21

We had this issue last year when we moved and needed to update wills as we had some financial changes. Left messages, emailed, called to make appointment and they never called back.
In the end I went to the office of another one and made an appointment face to face for three weeks later.

flamingogold · 07/11/2022 16:21

Are you hoping to use WillAid www.willaid.org.uk/? I suspect most firms are fully booked with appointments which have been made since September, but someone will probably get back to you soon. Just not within an hour or two.

No I have tried many times over the last couple of years. I started the thread yes because maybe I was upset or to be spurred again today. But I have been trying for a couple of years. It is like trying to find a plumber, I simply cannot find a solicitor. My estate is about £750k, so no not massive but not insignificant either and I just want to write a will.

The RNLI are offering free will writing. Google it.

LaraMargot · 07/11/2022 16:38

Farewill, they're brilliant, did my mum's probate.

I will have a look thank you. But honestly, free will writing is not my goal. I am very very happy to pay for will writing, I simply cannot find a solicitor wiling to take on a new client. I want to pay to write my will but I cannot find a solicitor in my area that is interested.

@Aprilx - can you give a rough idea where you are? People may be able to help with recommendations. Some employers also offer this as a benefit if that’s relevant to you

neverundersold · 07/11/2022 16:48

I did mine with Co-op legal services, have found them to provide a pretty good service.

Broadly speaking I am in Hertfordshire, the nearest medium sized town is Bishops Stortford and I would welcome any suggestions, thank you.

Go further afield - it can be done online.

TheWurst · 07/11/2022 16:51

@Aprilx - hmm sorry that’s the wrong area for me but hopefully some other people can help.

RandomMess · 07/11/2022 16:52

Just use Marlow Wills which is mumblechum she is so good and helpful, plus no VAT to pay.

All on line or by phone if you prefer.

TheaBrandt · 07/11/2022 16:57

PM me - can’t work out how to PM you!

Aprilx · 07/11/2022 17:13

Again for any avoidance of doubt, I am not after free advice or cheap advice. I want to pay full price advice to write a will but I cannot find a solicitor in Bishop's Stortford area that wants my business. I have a modest estate of about £750k that I would like to go in the direction I want rather than interstate.
