Why does nobody want to write my will!

Aprilx · 07/11/2022 16:00

I cannot find anyone wiling to write my will. My AIBU is am I unreasonable for somebody to want my business in writing my will.

I have called four local companies today and they have all given me the brush off or promised somebody would call me back but nobody has.

I am 52 and in average health, I don’t have children so I would like to dictate where my estate goes, but I cannot find anyone to write my will. (I know I can write my own will, I would like my will lodged with a solicitor).

*I don’t have children, neither does my husband so if we die together, intestate is really not how we would like things to go.

Marlow Wills isn't free or cheap?

She is a bonafide excellent will writer who writes wills remotely or in person.

Will Aid isn't free and needn't be cheap either, come to that. It is just that the money you hand over will go to a good cause. You an give hundreds, or thousands if you want to.

Aprilx · 07/11/2022 17:31

Amazing that 75% think I am unreasonable because I can’t find a solicitor willing to meet with me, I have tried for years. How is that unreasonable? Baffled.

I’ve heard raving reviews on here about Marlow Wills,

i think she’s Buckinghamshire so not a million miles away! (I looked it up because I’m bucks but I’ve still not got around to doing one 🤦🏼‍♀️)

ICanHideButICantRun · 07/11/2022 17:33

I've used @mumblechum from here - Marlow Wills - to draft my will. She was fantastic - I highly recommend her.

You are coming across as demanding on here so if you're like that in real life, maybe they don't want the hassle of your business?

Sorry, but you did ask!

newnamenewmane · 07/11/2022 17:40

Fortune Financial Planning, based in Hitchin, can arrange a will (it will be free of charge though!!). They will also discuss trusts etc.

Am I? I am interested to hear that and if there is something I can do to moderate I am happy to hear your thoughts as to what the issue could be. I am a professional person myself but not a lawyer, but it is not an alien world to me.

Again, I am just wanting to write a will for my moderate estate and I want to pay the going rate to do so. I have been trying for a few years, not constantly obviously but every now and again for three or four years. I cannot find a solicitor in my area that wants to write a will. I really am a normal and polite person in real life and I am sorry that you got a different impression.

[email protected]

a friend has just done her will and used an online company. Phone call to discuss within a week and a draft for her to review a couple of weeks later.

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 07/11/2022 17:47

I'm baffled at how it's possibly taken years to find someone to write a will. I just went to Co-op and it was done, drafted, witnessed and copies returned in about a month.

Avoid any charities offering free will writing for a start, they’re only in it to get you to leave money to them.

I used a will writer that worked over the phone and was recommended on here, but wouldn’t do it again when I update. I found the conversation to be very rushed, and even though my situation was complicated, very little time was taken to help my understand my options and come to the correct decisions. I felt pushed into making choices too quickly and I felt like she wanted the call over and done with as quickly as possible. It wasn’t a cheap service, but I’d have paid more if it had been an option when it became obvious I needed more time.

Dragonskin · 07/11/2022 17:50

Another one that has used Marlow Wills and was very happy

I am also baffled, hence my post. I didn’t want to do something with the Co op as I feel our situation is not straightforward. I wanted to find a solicitor that would have an hour to sit down and chat with me about it (at my expense). Maybe that is the issue, I am looking for a service that no linger exists.

I had a similar problem, and the problem was that I was approaching too high end firms. They don’t want to talk to you unless you have millions because a good solicitor charges £300-600/hr and it’s hard to get that will-writing except from millionaires. Find the lowest end firm you can and they’ll write you a will.

I wouldn’t rely too much on it being ‘lodged with a solicitor’ my granddad did that, the solicitors closed down and no one ever found the will, he was treated as intestate. 😐 I think you can register a will with the council though.

There are online solicitors who will do it properly for you, that may be the best bet.

Crabwoman · 07/11/2022 17:52

Are you in a union. They often have a will writing service available to Members.

Hamsterdamn · 07/11/2022 17:54

Marlow Wills, Mumblechum is brilliant. I need to
update mine so should get back in touch.

Just use Marlow Wills which is mumblechum she is so good and helpful, plus no VAT to pay.

All on line or by phone if you prefer.

I used Marlow Wills in August (not knowing she was a Mumsnetter) as we are nearby in Bucks. Yvonne was fab, very responsive and we actually did everything necessary on Zoom rather than face to face.

Suggest you get in touch with one of the members of here

Greenvelvetchair · 07/11/2022 17:58

Do it for free online, then pay (I think) about £20 to lodge it with HM Courts and Tribunal Service.

At one time, every time I went into my Bank, they were asking if I had a Will etc have you asked yours if they do wills?

Higgeldypiggeldy35 · 07/11/2022 18:11

We did ours for free with cancer research

zippitydoda · 07/11/2022 18:13

Look up Andrew Douglas Wills. Based in Braintree, so not too far and will probably come to you.
