I've NC because this is outing as I've been moaning to people about it IRL.

Bought a washing machine in 2012 and it died in December 2020 - that felt reasonable, it had heavy use and we got a new one immediately.

Timeline

  1. Dec 2020 - original 2012 machine broke down (machine 1)
  2. Dec 2020 - new machine delivered and worked fine (machine 2)
  3. Feb 2021 - Machine started leaking from the door and the retailed replaced it (machine 3)
  4. Dec 2021 - Machine 3 stopped draining and spinning, engineer said it was beyond repair and retailed replaced it (machine 4)
  5. Jan 2022 - Machine 4 started leaking from the door and the retailer replaced it (Machine 5)
  6. Nov 2022 - doing my washing on the weekend and got an electric shock from the drum.

I have and electrician here - he's tested all of the electrics (which are pretty new and in decent condition) and the socket that the machine in plugged in to, he's plugged it into other sockets and it's still giving us a shock (well him, I'm not bloody touching it again)

So I need Machine 6.

AIBU to think this should be replaced under warranty as the machine itself is less than a year old

YANBU - they should replace it
YABU - cheeky fucker territory - you can't expect 5 machines off one warranty

Assuming these are all the same make/model, I'd be asking for a refund by now and buying a completely different machine!

pastabakeonaplate · 07/11/2022 12:35

Is it the same model each time?!

Washingmachinewoe · 07/11/2022 12:37

No, a few different models!! Mostly Beko but a Hisense was in there briefly - I think that was machine 3...

If you can afford it buy a miele

fluffiphlox · 07/11/2022 12:50

AEG here. It has been very reliable. I’ve never heard of Hisense but I think Beko is more of a budget brand.

Washingmachinewoe · 07/11/2022 12:51

@bilbodog

I think I will - I don't have masses of money but I can afford it so will definitely get something significantly better.

Honestly something is wrong here. I have a 11 years old washing machine - heavy use (2 kids, 2 adults, 3 pets) - and still working fine.

Heyisforhorses · 07/11/2022 12:51

I'd assume each new machine starts a new warranty and would fight with retailer about this. It's very bizarre how many times you've changed so maybe go to shop to discuss your usage and see what they recommend.

Haffiana · 07/11/2022 12:52

Get a £1 temp subscription to Which and stop buying shitty brands of washing machine. It used to be 'Buy cheap, buy twice' but 'replace 6 times' is verging on stupidity.

ByTheGrace · 07/11/2022 12:52

That's terrible, I've had 4 in 30yrs, one of them was 10yrs old when it was given to us and lasted another 4yrs. The only stinker was a Beko (12mths and a day!), the others were all Siemens.

Maray1967 · 07/11/2022 12:52

I get Bosch - I asked John Lewis delivery men which models break down when a second hotpoint fridge freezer broke down in quick succession . They told me that they rarely have to take back Bosch, AEG, Miele - so now I get Bosch. My last washer went for 9 years doing a lot of loads most weeks. Not once did I need an engineer out to it. I don’t bother with an extended warrant - I just pay a bit more in the first place and save in the long run.

AlwaysLatte · 07/11/2022 12:54

I'd go for a Miele - ours has been going for years!

Another person with four washing machines in thirty years and one lasted almost half that time. All Zanussi and fourth is only a couple of years old.

halfsiesonapotnoodle · 07/11/2022 12:56

Are you absolutely sure you're not overloading it?

jaffacakeany1 · 07/11/2022 12:56

I don't have much luck with washing machines either. I now have D&G (Domestic & General) cover, £6 a month and if it can't be fixed or gets replaced. I've had lots of Bekos too, all broke very quickly.

Spanielsarepainless · 07/11/2022 12:57

I did have a Beko dishwasher that gave up after a year and two weeks. They weren't interested so never buying Beko anything.

DenholmElliot11 · 07/11/2022 12:59

I think years ago when buying washing machines the difference between the cheap ones and the expensive ones were the numbers of different types of programs.

today, they all seem to have the same number of programs and the difference between the cheap ones and the expensive ones is the life of the machine.

Miele - 1 machine at £900 for 20 years = £45 a year
Beko - 6 machines at £250 over 20 years = £75 a year (plus time shopping for new ones, taking old one to dump and waiting in for delivery people).

ElinoristhenewEnid · 07/11/2022 12:59

I have had 3 machines in 36 years. Hoover followed by 2 Bosch. Beko are rubbish!

Appleblum · 07/11/2022 12:59

That's absolutely crazy! I'd get a bosch if I were you.

GodspeedJune · 07/11/2022 13:00

My Bosch had 6 years of extremely heavy use. Replaced a couple of parts as they wore out. Sold for about a third of what I paid for it.

Replaced with a hotpoint which had a manufacturing fault within 6 months and the worst service I’ve ever experienced from their engineer. Rude and aggressive man.

I can’t wait for the hotpoint to die, I don’t expect it to last long. Will replace with another Bosch.

x2boys · 07/11/2022 13:00

I hear you i have terrible luck with washing machines mine never last for more than s couple of year i cant afford ,expensive model,s so always go cheaper Beko are paticularly shit though imo.

c3pu · 07/11/2022 13:00

I bought an LG in 2014 and it's still going strong. I remember when I bought it the general rule of thumb was if you want a decent machine you needed to spend about £500...

FightingFatAt49 · 07/11/2022 13:00

That's crazy Shock
Is there any common theme? If the retailer will replace then I'd go with that, but maybe see if you can add money to it to get a better brand.

Cuck00soup · 07/11/2022 13:03

I'd look at deals with longer guarantees if you can. Samsung, for example do a 5 year guarantee. Bosch also do this from time to time. (Don't by crappy Bosch series 4 though you need series 6).
