I've NC because this is outing as I've been moaning to people about it IRL.

Bought a washing machine in 2012 and it died in December 2020 - that felt reasonable, it had heavy use and we got a new one immediately.

Timeline

  1. Dec 2020 - original 2012 machine broke down (machine 1)
  2. Dec 2020 - new machine delivered and worked fine (machine 2)
  3. Feb 2021 - Machine started leaking from the door and the retailed replaced it (machine 3)
  4. Dec 2021 - Machine 3 stopped draining and spinning, engineer said it was beyond repair and retailed replaced it (machine 4)
  5. Jan 2022 - Machine 4 started leaking from the door and the retailer replaced it (Machine 5)
  6. Nov 2022 - doing my washing on the weekend and got an electric shock from the drum.

I have and electrician here - he's tested all of the electrics (which are pretty new and in decent condition) and the socket that the machine in plugged in to, he's plugged it into other sockets and it's still giving us a shock (well him, I'm not bloody touching it again)

So I need Machine 6.

AIBU to think this should be replaced under warranty as the machine itself is less than a year old

YANBU - they should replace it
YABU - cheeky fucker territory - you can't expect 5 machines off one warranty

I wouldn't get a Miele - we did for our tumble dryer, when something went wrong (after warranty period) we found that the local repair guy couldn't fix it, had to be a Miele engineer and it was horribly expensive.
Our washers have been Bosch, decent length of life, and now Siemens.

Caspianberg · 07/11/2022 13:32

Aeg here. 9kg. 1600 spin. Matching heat pump dryer.

Had both 5 years, and they wash all ours and bed and breakfast business laundry which is a lot summer time. Both as new.

Bosch is no longer German.

I have a Bosch which was about £500, it is adequate but I only have it because I wanted a particular drum size and the other option was Samsung which I had to send back as it wouldn't stop moving across the room.

I have had 4 Bosch machines and with one exception they have lasted well. Had a Hotpoint which broke down every few weeks, and a Whirlpool which went wrong so often I got to know the engineer very well.

Had a narrow escape with a Beko as the AO delivery men were unable couldn't be arsed to fit it and I told them to take it back.

Re: Which, waste of time, there are few reviews for the up to date models, I looked. Plenty of reviews online if you Google the one you are interested in. That's what I did in the end after wondering why the Samsung was so shitty, so spent a lot of time reading independent reviews (not Argos or AO they don't publish bad ones).

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 07/11/2022 13:34

Mine is 25 years and going strong.

ElspethTascioni · 07/11/2022 13:35

I had the same with one of the cheaper Bosch machines. So gave up and bought a Miele. Cost me £1k 🙈 but it has a 10 year warranty, and I LOVE it! 🤣

AriettyHomily · 07/11/2022 13:36

I've got a beko, it's at least six years old no issue.

Samsung washing machines are often reduced by 50% in the sales.

If you can afford the insurance it's worth it.

My last machine died after 3 years.

I got the full price credit for a new machine through the insurance.

Samsung died after 3 years? I bought my EcoBubble in lockdown 2020 🤐Please fate, don't let my machine die young.

ErrolTheDragon · 07/11/2022 13:39

Bosch is no longer German.

Really? I mean, I know it's multinational but it's still German owned and headquartered in Germany isn't it?

mamabear715 · 07/11/2022 13:44

Well, it sounds like you pays your money & takes your choice!
I've never assumed that anything expensive lasts longer. I buy cheap & cheerful Indesit as I don't need a million different programmes - I'd say they last around 5-7 yrs each? I give them a lot of hammer!
I loves getting me a new sparkly one, too, even if they are behind a door. :-)

Good luck, @Washingmachinewoe , update us!

Igmum · 07/11/2022 13:44

I have a Miele. My last one lasted 22 years. Hopefully this one will do the same. Worth every penny.

Bytrgrewd · 07/11/2022 13:46

do you use vinegar in your wash? This apparently destroys seals

SchoolQuestionnaire · 07/11/2022 13:49

You need a Miele. I’ve had mine 12 years and still going strong. My dm has had hers 20. They are amazing.

Dougieowner · 07/11/2022 13:50

Didn't like my Bosch.
Motor died after a couple of years (new motor fitted) and then the programmer went a year later.

Had a Zanussi washer/dryer in the 1980's but since then all have been Hotpoint (apart from the Bosch).

My eco bubble is 5.5 years old. It’s been great.

If you can afford it buy a miele

Definitely this. We’ve had ours five years so far and it‘s fab. Our neighbour bought one 20 years ago and finally had to replace it last year!

ChillinwiththeVillains · 07/11/2022 13:54

If you can afford to buy a bosch from John Lewis then it comes with 2 or sometimes 5 year warranty. First repair they undertake, second time you can ask for a refund. Then buy a new item and that resets the clock on warranties etc. whereas if you accept a replacement then that is governed by the original purchase date. For what it’s worth I bought Miele but have decided that they are resting on their laurels and from now on am Team Bosch.

Lachie · 07/11/2022 13:54

I’ve got a Beko which is 6yo and no problems with it (fingers crossed!) and my then partner (now DH) had several much more high tech miele’s in that time.

When we moved in together I kept to mine as I didn’t want his more expensive one as I can’t stand all the touch screens that inevitably go wrong. As I had been sick of hearing about his washing machine woes over the years Smile

Washingmachinewoe · 07/11/2022 13:57

Update:

AO.com were great and will replace after Beko tried to make me wait over a week for an engineer but weren’t willing to pay for my laundry service in that time.

I’ve been sent off to choose a new machine and I can choose one I like and pay the additional if it’s more expensive.

Since 1990 have had three machines, Tricity Bendix which was fantastic, then Bosch and currently Hisense but inherited this from my dad when we sold his house. It was about a year old and I've had it 6 months.

Really hoping it works for some time to come but if it dies will go back to Bosch as don't think you can get Tricity Bendix any more.

mamabear715 · 07/11/2022 14:00

YAY!!! That's brilliant, @Washingmachinewoe :-)

Good to know AO were helpful too, I get all my appliances from there.

My mum bought a Hoover Keymatic for the crazy price of £130 in 1967 - it finally gave up the ghost 22 years laster in1989. Adjusted for inflation that would cost an eye-watering £1900 now!

@ErrolTheDragon when I researched machines, I found that most of them were made in various countries, none of which were Germany.

People think Bosch is actually still made in Germany, at the time of purchasing ours they were mainly made in Poland. The company is now Bosch Siemens (and the quality has gone downhill with the Siemens branded items as we discovered recently). It may be based in Germany but that doesn't guarantee the quality that people are used to and expect because of the name.

Different batches/models can come from assorted countries. I haven't checked recently as not bought a w/m for a while but certainly was the case a few years ago.

I was actually looking for German made machines when I found the information, sadly was unable to buy a German made one at the time, Miele was the only option then, and none in stock anywhere, had to be on a waiting list and couldn't wait.

Flaunch · 07/11/2022 14:19

Get a Bosch. We’ve had two in 20 years!

Whiskers4 · 07/11/2022 14:21

I'm on my third Hotpoint in 27years - cheaper than other well known brands. Present one still going strong.
