6th washing machine in 2 years - AIBU?

I've NC because this is outing as I've been moaning to people about it IRL.

Bought a washing machine in 2012 and it died in December 2020 - that felt reasonable, it had heavy use and we got a new one immediately.

Timeline

  1. Dec 2020 - original 2012 machine broke down (machine 1)
  2. Dec 2020 - new machine delivered and worked fine (machine 2)
  3. Feb 2021 - Machine started leaking from the door and the retailed replaced it (machine 3)
  4. Dec 2021 - Machine 3 stopped draining and spinning, engineer said it was beyond repair and retailed replaced it (machine 4)
  5. Jan 2022 - Machine 4 started leaking from the door and the retailer replaced it (Machine 5)
  6. Nov 2022 - doing my washing on the weekend and got an electric shock from the drum.

I have and electrician here - he's tested all of the electrics (which are pretty new and in decent condition) and the socket that the machine in plugged in to, he's plugged it into other sockets and it's still giving us a shock (well him, I'm not bloody touching it again)

So I need Machine 6.

AIBU to think this should be replaced under warranty as the machine itself is less than a year old

YANBU - they should replace it
YABU - cheeky fucker territory - you can't expect 5 machines off one warranty

We had a Siemens dishwasher which was still going strong after 19 years when we moved house but couldn't bring it with us. So thinking more Siemens than Bosch atm

KimberleyClark · 07/11/2022 16:43

We are on our 4th machine in 32 years. We currently have a Bosch which is at least 12 years old.

LoveAutumnColours · 07/11/2022 16:44

I have been in my current house 20 years. I moved with one washing machine that was at least 8 years old and subsequently replaced twice. Last being earlier this year. I always by Bosch and have warranty or insurance. The machines used to be heavily used by family of 6 including huge amounts of sports kit (very dirty, muddy etc) so there were repairs along the way.

look for better machines. Maybe you need to consider your usage and choose accordingly - drum size etc.

LoveMyCats1 · 07/11/2022 16:46

There's something wrong with your electrics / water pressure going to the machine. Something is damaging them. How very odd!

LoveMyCats1 · 07/11/2022 16:48

I was told on about 5 occasions the light switch that kept shocking me was fine until they found out it wasn't and fixed it 🙄

My mum bought a Hoover Keymatic for the crazy price of £130 in 1967 - it finally gave up the ghost 22 years laster in1989. Adjusted for inflation that would cost an eye-watering £1900 now!

Think you have hit the nail on the head, people complain that a £300 washing machine didn't last, but really the prices are a whole lot less than they were years ago. I paid £350 for a zanussi in 1999 and just had a look on JL and a zanussi today is £369.

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 07/11/2022 17:18

I’ve got a Samsung I’ve had it for 5 years now and no issues

i also have a Beko American fridge freezer that’s still going strong 8 years and 2 house moved later 🤷‍♀️

TheOrigRights · 07/11/2022 21:04

I am on my second machine since the mid 90s.
Family of either 4, 3 or 2, including 2 kids who have done muddy sport.

Miele here. 23 years old and still washing just fine, it is quite economical to run too.
I think from memory it was almost £400 at the time (more basic model). So annual cost less than £20/year. No maintenance required so far.

ScroogeMcDuckling · 07/11/2022 23:15

Just bought an Electra from AO for £169. It’s very good and washes beautifully and is extremely economical.

Before that we (me) STUPIDLY went for a hoover washer/dryer at just under £500. It lasted three years and cost a lot (hell of a lot) to run.

Before that an Indesit basic one for at least twelve years, costing £229, washed and worked extremely well, and is still going (a relative has it now), changed it because wanted a drier. STUPID, STUPID, STUPID!!

And the first one in 1987 was an Electra which was the Electric Boards own brand, given to us lasted just under 20years.

I have always been of the opinion, with white goods, when they go wrong you replace them. £70-£150 call out charge, then the part on top.

My auntie isn’t impressed with this new Miele, which cost £1500, someone else on here said exactly the same as her “resting on their laurels”, she loved her previous two, each lasted 18-20years.

We still have the basic Electra under counter larder fridge from 1987, and that is fine according to the thermometer in it,

The gas cooker is over twenty years old and is going to be replaced after Christmas, hopefully the sales will be good, but it will be replaced like for like, the basic eye level grill one.

Have been thru three chest freezers each under £100 since 1987.

I know I very sound mean, we have been very lucky with appliances, but we do tend just to buy the simple ones.

The washing machine your looking at looks very nice, and I hope it lasts till the next millennium

Womanofcustard · 07/11/2022 23:21

I swear by Zanussi. My first one lasted 15 years. I now have another, about 10 years now. Indesit in between only lasted 2 years. You get what you pay for.

Washingmachinewoe · 08/11/2022 07:51

Thank you all.

I should say the Beko American fridge freezer we got in 2012 is still great. One breakdown because we didn’t properly cover it during renovations.

I've had a Beko for 7 years without a single problem. I don't think it's the brand that's the problem here.

Prometheus · 08/11/2022 07:58

I’m sat here waiting for a washing machine repair man to arrive as our 5 year old Bosch has started smelling strongly of smoke/fire in the drum. We previously had a Bosch that also only lasted five years before the ball bearings went and the repair man said it wasn’t worth repairing due to cost.

ScarlettSunset · 08/11/2022 07:59

Is it the same retailer all the time? Sounds like they are hauling out all the duds to send you as replacements!
I did have a problem with a washing machine myself as it broke down literally every 2 to 3 months. They kept sending someone out to fix it but it was massively inconvenient. On the seventh breakdown I really lost it and took it right to the top of the company, and had a brand new machine delivered the next day, which has run perfectly ever since, for years now. I do still suspect though that they took the old one back, repaired it again and probably foisted it onto another unsuspecting customer...

StrataZon · 08/11/2022 08:04

I can’t wait for the hotpoint to die, I don’t expect it to last long. Will replace with another Bosch.

My hotpoint is 12 years old and still going strong. Previous one lasted nearly 10 years

BananaFluff · 08/11/2022 08:08

I'd treat each machine as a new machine with new warranty

caringcarer · 08/11/2022 08:13

The common theme here is that Beko appliances seem to break after about a year. Just avoid Beko and buy a decent brand. I buy Zannusi, Hotpoint, Bush all have lasted years and years and not much more expensive than Beko.

Here to complain about Miele.

Bought a Miele washing machine in 2015. Free 10 year warranty. Hooray, I thought, no washing machine worries until 2025.

A couple of months ago it started making loud noises, engineer came out and advised us it was beyond economical repair. Turns out the warranty was parts and labour only and the best that Miele could offer was 20% off a new machine. I am loathe to buy from them given this one broke.

Moral of my story is if you have a Miele with an extended warranty check what you are covered for.

Good luck with the new machine OP.

Lincslady53 · 08/11/2022 08:36

We have a Samsung and it is the best machine we have had in 40 years. Easy to use, easy to clear the filter, very intuitive so you don't need to keep checking the manual and it plays a tune when it has finished. Not the cheapest, but not the dearest either.

For a deep dive into Miele it has been discussed previously.

A brand that was ok 7 years ago may not be now, unfortunately.

Unfortunately true. We've found this with AEG, our previous cooker, hob and extractor were AEG, so we automatically went for the same when renovating a new house. Have had problems with the oven and extractor- had 3 extractors under warranty and the 4th in a different design has issues. Found out later that AEG had been taken over by Electrolux between purchases.

Washingmachinewoe · 10/11/2022 17:18

Update:

machine arrived, plumbed in and on third load.

It has a great 1hr cycle so I can get the backlog done so fast.

Its very quiet.

I got DH to touch the drum and no shocks 🤣

I've had my Beko for over 10 years! I make sure I don't overload it, descale on a regular basis and every 6 weeks or so, do a empty 90 wash to give it a good clear out!
