I've NC because this is outing as I've been moaning to people about it IRL.

Bought a washing machine in 2012 and it died in December 2020 - that felt reasonable, it had heavy use and we got a new one immediately.

Timeline

  1. Dec 2020 - original 2012 machine broke down (machine 1)
  2. Dec 2020 - new machine delivered and worked fine (machine 2)
  3. Feb 2021 - Machine started leaking from the door and the retailed replaced it (machine 3)
  4. Dec 2021 - Machine 3 stopped draining and spinning, engineer said it was beyond repair and retailed replaced it (machine 4)
  5. Jan 2022 - Machine 4 started leaking from the door and the retailer replaced it (Machine 5)
  6. Nov 2022 - doing my washing on the weekend and got an electric shock from the drum.

I have and electrician here - he's tested all of the electrics (which are pretty new and in decent condition) and the socket that the machine in plugged in to, he's plugged it into other sockets and it's still giving us a shock (well him, I'm not bloody touching it again)

So I need Machine 6.

AIBU to think this should be replaced under warranty as the machine itself is less than a year old

YANBU - they should replace it
YABU - cheeky fucker territory - you can't expect 5 machines off one warranty

I have had a Miele for 10yrs now and never ever had a problem best buy ever.

I have had 3 machines in 36 years. Hoover followed by 2 Bosch. Beko are rubbish!

You've beaten me, I was about to boast about my 3 machines in 20 years 😆

ReviewingTheSituation · 07/11/2022 13:04

Just to add some balance - I've had my Beko machine 10 years and it's never had any issues at all. My machine before that was a Hotpoint which lasted 2 years max.
Like all brands, there are cheaper/entry level models, and 'better' models. Mine is a mid-range Beko, and got better reviews (both consumer and Which?) than the cheaper Bosch ones.

FirstnameSuesecondnamePerb · 07/11/2022 13:05

That's unlucky
My last one was Beko and lasted 5 years, almost to the day! Only replaced with Samsung cos it was the only one AO had for next day delivery and installation .
Yanbu. I think a minimum of 3 years is what you should get from a mid range washer.

Mildura · 07/11/2022 13:08

Blimey, in nearly 25 years I've only had one machine give up life.
Definitely upgrade the brand: Bosch, Samsung, Miele.

Lovemelovemydoggie · 07/11/2022 13:09

Just came on to say don’t buy a Miele.

Having real issues with their after-care, the tumble dryer stopped working in September. 4 appointments and over £500 later they haven’t been able to fix it. Also have to wait sometimes two weeks between appointments. They take ages to respond to emails. Miel machines are great until they go wrong and you have to deal with the chaotic customer services.

TroysMammy · 07/11/2022 13:10

Whilst we are talking washing machines could someone please advise of the benefits of a Wi-Fi washing machine. I never have my washing machine on when I'm out and my house is small enough that I don't have to get off my lazy arse to walk far to put the machine on.

AcrobaticActuary · 07/11/2022 13:12

Have you had your wiring and consumer unit tested, and made sure that it isn’t anything caused by surging or a faulty connection etc? Six different machines of different manufacturers in two years all having individual faults is less likely than if being an issue with your property.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 07/11/2022 13:12

That’s crazy… I’ve had mine for 15+ years. (American here). It’s a super basic model no electronics/ top loader I think we’ve replaced 2 parts on it in that time.

I am dreading the day we can’t repair it or find parts. I don’t want a crappy new one.

Yes, @Washingmachinewoe try a new brand. The one(s) you’ve had appear to be not working out very well.

Baileysandicecream · 07/11/2022 13:14

It's all well and good telling OP to buy expensive makes. But they can only buy what they can afford!

I've had two Beko washing machines that lasted us 15 years combined. We only got rid of the second one after moving house and wanted a washer/dryer instead.

Make sure you're not overloading it. Most machines can only take a full load on the eco ridiculously long washes. Washer/dryers have a smaller load for drying as well. And generally don't last as long as I found out this week!

Washingmachinewoe · 07/11/2022 13:16

Beko are out then!

Deffo not overloading it etc

I should have been clearer, I have only paid for machine 1 in 2012 (Beko) and then machine 2 in 2020 (Beko) so largely been stuck with that brand as they provide the replacement via retailer. The Hisense (was because they didn't have any Beko available for 2 weeks and I kicked off.

Currently on hold and we'll see what happens.

Mine is Bosch, no issues and very happy with it

Crunchymum · 07/11/2022 13:17

I thought I had a bad time with machines (5 or 6 in 15 years) but our first few were cheap.

I now have a Bosch and I hate the fucker. I actually want this one to break [and it stops working regularly but we've always been able to fix the thing by cleaning / replacing the filter]

To attract the interest of men I presume?

DH was very interested in the washing machines we looked at that had blue tooth and WiFi. None of which could do a 9Kg wash or 1600 spin though.

Apparently ours has 'special washes' You can unlock by waving your phone about next to it. But if I'm standing right next to it, I might as well just press the screen on the machine itself?! Or am I just old?!

Washingmachinewoe · 07/11/2022 13:17

Also - the one that lasted 8 years was a good old fashioned one with dials. All of the ones that have failed since Dec 2020 have been electronic ones.

These machines sound absolutely useless. It's got to a stage where washing machines are not designed to be repaired. Get something with an extended warranty and throw it away when it stops working after the warranty has ended. If in doubt, buy German (bosch, aeg, miele etc) (for anything engineered).

Motnight · 07/11/2022 13:19

I had similar awful luck with Bosch. 5 machines in 5 years, they kept replacing them due to extended warranty but it was the absolute faff of having to call them out. The last time the machine broke down Bosch couldn't fix it but didn't want to replace and I just bought another machine.

Tessasanderson · 07/11/2022 13:20

I got sick of buying washing machines. Spending £5-700 on whatever Zanussi etc with huge capacities and whatever 1000's spin cycles. They all shook themselves to pieces in about 3 years usually not long after the warranty had expired.

In a fit of desperation i bought a cheapo Beko unit with not a LED in sight for not much money. It lasted 7 years. It was the best bang for bucks i ever had.

I replaced it eventually with a Bosch model which has been good so far. About 3 years old.

I would definately not advise anyone against using a Beko washer.

thesecretshame · 07/11/2022 13:20

Another one here that has only just replaced her ten year old Beko - It was a workhorse, great programmes and quite efficient with electric despite is age according to our smart meter.

Got a new Beko and have my fingers crossed that it will last just as long

knittingaddict · 07/11/2022 13:23

It's not the makes that's the problem. It's something else. I've had a Beko dishwasher for a few years now and use it everyday and it's never broken down.

Maverick197 · 07/11/2022 13:24

Do not buy a Samsung, their 5 year guarantee isn't worth the money it's written on! Samsung has a big problem with leaky door seals, but these are excluded from the warranty. Their customer service is terribly unhelpful as well.

If you can't afford a Miele, Siemens are also brilliant.

knittingaddict · 07/11/2022 13:24

Sorry forgot to say that I don't have an expensive washing machine either and that's not broken down either.

EmeraldShamrock1 · 07/11/2022 13:25

Samsung washing machines are often reduced by 50% in the sales.

If you can afford the insurance it's worth it.

My last machine died after 3 years.

I got the full price credit for a new machine through the insurance.

Can you still buy the dial kind? It’s getting a lot harder to find them here but you still can

goingback · 07/11/2022 13:31

i think you need to think about usage, how many loads per week, what types of load, programs used. you say you are not overloading the machine but you may be for the program chosen.
My mum was like this until we discovered she was trying to wash nearly a full load on the superquick program. the budget machines generally do not have a load sensor so can be overloaded and unbalanced.
if you can get the best machine you can afford , lots of better machines come with longer guarantees. Also follow the programs as designated for the best results. Personal choice would be Miele, Bosch, AEG and Samsung.

As for WIFI machines , the apps are great for people who don't know how to wash as they give feedback such as overloading, energy use and can suggest best programs to choose for your laundry pile.
