I've NC because this is outing as I've been moaning to people about it IRL.

Bought a washing machine in 2012 and it died in December 2020 - that felt reasonable, it had heavy use and we got a new one immediately.

Timeline

  1. Dec 2020 - original 2012 machine broke down (machine 1)
  2. Dec 2020 - new machine delivered and worked fine (machine 2)
  3. Feb 2021 - Machine started leaking from the door and the retailed replaced it (machine 3)
  4. Dec 2021 - Machine 3 stopped draining and spinning, engineer said it was beyond repair and retailed replaced it (machine 4)
  5. Jan 2022 - Machine 4 started leaking from the door and the retailer replaced it (Machine 5)
  6. Nov 2022 - doing my washing on the weekend and got an electric shock from the drum.

I have and electrician here - he's tested all of the electrics (which are pretty new and in decent condition) and the socket that the machine in plugged in to, he's plugged it into other sockets and it's still giving us a shock (well him, I'm not bloody touching it again)

So I need Machine 6.

AIBU to think this should be replaced under warranty as the machine itself is less than a year old

YANBU - they should replace it
YABU - cheeky fucker territory - you can't expect 5 machines off one warranty

@Mumrey

Tbf my Beko fridge was bought 2012 and is still fine. Also I have a Beko Tumbke Dryer which is great.

Bosch is no longer German

Our 1 YO Bosch dishwasher was made in Germany. OP what on earth are you doing to your appliances?

We're on our third washing machine in 27 years (AEG, currently 2 YO). First one was left in our old house, still working, at 11 YO and the second one lasted 15 years before it got very very loud so probably the bearings.

But that's nothing compared with our 23 YO Hotpoint (Made in England!) fridge freezer. If it wasn't for the fact that it now costs a fortune to run due to the electricity consumption, I'd hang on to it to see how much longer it would last.

@Baileysandicecream

honestly no clue.

Two leaked out the door after a week so not me obviously,

One just refused to spin or drain - some internal fault

Now this one shocked me. It’s honestly not me! I just use them normally!

The first one breaking that started the whole business stopped working after 8 years and it wasn’t high end so I felt that was reasonable life.

Pains me when I hear of people taking out extended warranties.

Know your rights, consumer rights act, goods must be fit for purpose for 6 years and if they fail due to a manufacturing defect you are covered provided you have used them correctly. Had a 5 year old TV replaced recently that conked out outside of warranty.

I've had both Bosch and Samsung washing machines, both have been great, and you get a half decent manufacturers warranty anyway with the Samsung.

I refuse to buy anything with a warranty of less than 5 years now as nothing says to me a manufacturer has no confidence in their product more than a short warranty.

Most washing machines are thrown together in Eastern Europe nowadays, probably has something to answer for in terms of the quality. But a plus one to Beko and Hi Sense being shit!

Most of the low-end machines are made in the same factory, just with different badging. That said, I have a second-hand Hotpoint (all I could afford at the time) and it’s still going strong a decade later. When it finally gives up the ghost I’ll be looking at a replacement with at least a 5 year warranty. Any manufacturer who can’t guarantee their product will last more than a year doesn’t deserve my or your money

Very unlucky. I have had three machines in over 30 years

I won't buy Siemens again, we needed a new dishwasher when there was a shortage of white goods, and ended up with one thinking it would be better than the Bosch one that never dried anything. Siemens one is even worse, it doesn't even try to dry anything, the racks are made for specifically sized and shaped items and the cutlery tray stops you putting tumblers in the top rack.
It has too many bells & whistles. So, on that basis I won't replace the washing machine with a Siemens one.

I find that with a lot of machines and choose a washing machine for its rinsing cycles and lack of fiddly bits. I also look for a drum that will wash a duvet so needs to be a good size.
