Skidding Car - friend's husband today "couldn't resist the opportunity"

alwaysmovingforwards · 05/11/2022 19:02

Sorry, bit of a long one..

I flew back to the UK today and my friend's husband had kindly agreed to give me a lift home from the airport. Such a lovely gesture - saves me either a hefty taxi bill or 2+hrs on public transport. My friend lives close to me and her husband owns companies on the industrial estates near the airport , so he's always doing that route. I get on really well with both of them and their family, they're all lovely people, seem very happy and lead a very nice lifestyle. It was my friend who made the offer and we arranged a couple of weeks ago, he then followed up on text to say it's no problem just let him flight details etc which I did.

Anyway, we arranged for me to get the airport bus 10mins to the long stay carpark to avoid the airport fees, which makes sense. So I get there and he arrives shortly after. It's a massive carpark and pretty much empty so he pulls up right next to the little shelter thing, we say hi, he gives me a hand putting my bag in the boot and I get in and buckle up. As we pull away I'm saying thank you and was about to ask how everyone is, but he's smiling and says "sorry, just can't resist the opportunity..."

He then accelerates his car really quickly, turns and the whole car starts skidding sideways! The engine sounds incredibly loud and must be revving right up to full power and we're literally sliding on the wet carpark in a big circle, totally terrifying. I don't know if he was in control because the steering wheel was moving around quickly but didn't seem to correlate with the direction of the car. It's one of the most shocking things I've ever experienced and I don't like roller coasters etc.

He then slows, chuckles "just couldn't resist it" again and calmly drives to the barriers, exits smoothly towards the motorway, puts the radio on and then casually starts asking how my trip was.. as if that whole thing didn't happen! I tried to speak on the way home, to be polite and make small talk, but in all honesty I was feeling very ill and my legs were shaky 40mins later when he dropped me off.

Should I tell my friend what an abolosute idiot her husband actually is? On one had I really appreciate the gesture of giving me a lift and value our friendship, but on the other this was an incredibly dangerous and shocking incident she should be aware of.

It's so weird, because up until now I thought he was a really nice guy. But I just can't see him in the same way any more. I know he likes fast cars because she's told me that the stables at their house have been converted into garages and he has various cars in there. I've been in the car with him before and he's been a really good confident driver, very safe and smooth. He's in his early 50s FFS!

To make matters worse, I called my parents when home to say hi after my trip. I spoke to my Dad as even though he's in his 70s, he knows lots about cars and I explained what happened and he sort of laughed and said "well, once every now and again, why not eh..."
Seriously WTF?!?

So AIBU to be so shocked and upset by this? I still feel nauseous now.

Or is there a weird parallel universe I've just discovered where respectable, responsible, grown arse men with kids and wives and businesses, that should know better, see it as perfectly acceptable to be doing skidding and sliding and loud engine revving in their cars?

Lot's of guys and girls for that matter enjoy that sort of thing, just watch top gear. I see no major issue in an empty carpark from safety point of view. As you say he normal drives safely and did so on the way home. However, doing that with someone else in the car with out checking first is crass. No issue mentioning to your friend but she'll probably roll her eyes and say he's done it with her in the care too.

lollylimejuice · 06/11/2022 18:05

Sounds like a handbrake turn, great fun. There's rarely a nice big empty space that it's safe to do these things in these days. Just a bit of fun. Get over it. I wish I'd been in the car instead.

bpirockin · 06/11/2022 18:09

In those circumstances, I understand your response totally. Not the sort of thing you just spring on someone. I'd expect it from a partner, or even might like to do it myself should an appropriate situation present itself, but unless you know someone can handle it, then it's bound to be a bit scary to say the least.

AreYouHavingAny · 06/11/2022 18:09

I dont agree with immature bwhaviour in general, but i think yabu. It sounds like you've lived a very sheltered life? Even i cant resist the temptation of skidding round the corner sometimes if the opportunity presents itself 😆Its Ok if youre a confident driver.

pinkpotatoez · 06/11/2022 18:11

SHAKING😂 don't be so ridiculous. I wouldn't worry he probably won't give you another lift if you was visibly shaking🤣

Vixetar · 06/11/2022 18:12

FFS have you got nothing better to worry about? Yes he was immature and a bit of an idiot, but you are massively overreacting

katepilar · 06/11/2022 18:13

I wonder, how all the people who call the OP a drama queen and ridicule her for shaking, how would they like that if they were scared to that level and people reacted like this.

OP, please dont feel bad as all these people are trying to make you feel.

Twentyfirstcenturymumma · 06/11/2022 18:15

Weird responses to an a

Algor1thm · 06/11/2022 18:15

A little immature, but so is still shaking 40 minutes later. And thinking about telling on him to his wife 😂 What's she supposed to do? Tell him off? Divorce him?

Guiltycat · 06/11/2022 18:16

That is a very odd reaction to have to a donut 😂

Shaking for 40 minutes and still feeing sick hours later?

How did you manage to get on a plane!

You were perfectly within your rights to tell him to pack it in and that you didn’t like it. Not quite sure why a grown woman would struggle to say that to a close friend?

Incognitomum11 · 06/11/2022 18:19

You would hate getting a lift from me… maybe he assumed you were as fun as his wife and would be ok with some harmless play in an empty car park

Twentyfirstcenturymumma · 06/11/2022 18:19

an apparently misleading title. People have one track minds.
Very judgmental and unsympathetic responses to still shaking 40 mins later... if op was still shaking she had been very frightened by this infantile, potentially dangerous, behaviour.
Of course it's worth 9 paras on MN, free speech is a thing

AndorP · 06/11/2022 18:21

What a storm in a teacup! Tell his wife? Get a grip love.

BaddogGooddoggy · 06/11/2022 18:24

YANBU. He should have asked you if you minded, it was a rude and thoughtless and entitled thing to do with you in the car. In fact, whether you were in the car or not, it was pathetic.

LaughingCat · 06/11/2022 18:24

Yeah, totally something most of my friends would do. It’s just a donut, in an empty car park - how sheltered was your upbringing, @alwaysmovingforwards? 😂 Embrace the chaos! 🤩

twilightermummy · 06/11/2022 18:32

This has properly made me laugh!

DarkKarmaIlama · 06/11/2022 18:33

Never been in a car with anyone who did that. I grew up in care and I’ve seen things many mumsnetters certainly haven’t @LaughingCat if that’s what you call embracing chaos then we clearly have different definitions of that word.

Admittedly I don’t know any immature, pathetic business owners though who don’t consider the feelings of others. Ahh yeah that must be it 🤔.

ilovebagpuss · 06/11/2022 18:34

Well I think it's really odd behaviour. I'm constantly amazed by mumsnet reactions. Fine to have a bit of fun before picking up but it's not OK to do that with a passenger even if it is someone you know fairly well.

They don't know if you have been involved in car accidents in the past or anything.
I don't think I'd be shaking 40 mins after but I would be a bit thrown and worried then the whole drive home.

Can't believe there are so many responses saying how it's a common thing and they love a bit of skidding round carparks. I mean I enjoy F&F as much as the next person but I know I'm not Dom Toretto.

Sennelier1 · 06/11/2022 18:36

He was doing "tête-à-qeue" (head-to-tail) in an empty carpark, wich I agree can be very tempting. I also agree he shouldn't have done this with an innocent passenger,in his car, at least not without asking if you were o.k. with this. His wife probably knows and made him promise to only do this safely - in an empty carpark that is. So yes, YABU. Go speak with him, talk it out. Ask him to exclude you from this otherwise fun exercise 😊

CourtneeLuv · 06/11/2022 18:39

Keyansier · 05/11/2022 19:06

In an empty car park? YABU and overreacting and sound like an attention seeker. I also agree with the poster above that you titled the thread as you did to purposely mislead people = again, attention seeking.

THIS.

notonacokebottle · 06/11/2022 18:41

Frankly do not understand why certain posters on here cannot imagine how scary that stunt might have been if you hadn't 'signed up' to it, or why the OP is being labelled 'attention-seeking for saying so. Your problem if you were hoping for a nice juicy groping story, FFS!

GirlInTheMirror27 · 06/11/2022 18:41

Eyesopenwideawake · 05/11/2022 19:11

I would have asked him to stop.

So we could change places and I could have a go!!

This👆🏾👆🏾👆🏾would be me and I would ask him to teach me more tricks 😁😁

LovelyIssues · 06/11/2022 18:48

Sounds totally normal. I wouldn't have been able to resist either

ReallyTryingTo · 06/11/2022 18:49

All the people bashing because of the title I don't understand.

I wouldn't like someone doing this stupidity with me in the car. Completely irresponsible. Accidents do happen. Empty car park or not - someone could have been trying to pull in and he isn't in full control of the car is he.
Would your dad be saying it's fine if he'd flipped the car by hitting a curb or something.
As a passenger they are in charge of your life.
I would bring it up to his wife but in a jokey way.
I was in a car with someone who is a show off asshole the other week and they decided it would be funny to do 145mph with me in the car - no thank you!

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 06/11/2022 18:49

Well I have learned a lot from this thread! I genuinely thought the only people who did donuts in empty car parks were boy racer idiot twats but apparently it’s something ‘everyone’ does and if you don’t like it then you’re lame and uptight. I can honestly say it’s never occurred to me to do it or even want to do it. I’m so surprised at the majority of the responses!

Yes I agree. The bloke sounds like an absolute twat. What's worse is that all the posters seem fine with someone randomly driving like a twat without even asking their passengers if it's OK. Why didn't he do it if he really really couldn't resist Hmm before she got in?
