To ask if I need to spend over £1k for a nice mattress?

I was looking at an ikea one for less than £400 that people kept rating

But I've been on another thread and people are gushing over their £1.5k Tempa? Mattress.

Am I really missing out that much if I only have a very modest budget? Should I splurge and push it to get a very nice one?

Good sleep is important as I don't get much of it - I'm a carer.

Mine was £100 from ebay a few years ago it's it's amazing. Memory foam with springs. A lot of the time you're paying for the name!

sellmeyours · 05/11/2022 17:21

@QuestionableMouse thank you! Was it second hand or just from an outlet? Sounds lovely!

The websites seem to suggest different mattresses for different sleepers but I don't know how I sleep! I honestly couldn't say if I sleep on my back or side? I just don't sleep on my front

No, it was new. Can't remember the name unfortunately but if you like I'll have a look at the tag 😊

Premier inn Hypnos one was 599 for kingsize. So so comfy and supportive. Previously we've been ikea people but with age our backs needed a bit more. This had made a huge difference.

I would always go for a sprung mattress with a memory foam top layer, and buy a really good quality mattress protector to keep it clean. There are always good offers on Wowcher and Go Groupie. Ds got a really nice bed and mattress on Wowcher for less that £500. It is a king sized, side opening ottoman bed with a sprung mattress. Loads of storage underneath. You just have to keep an eye out for offers/stock clearance.

I tried cheap mattresses before and it was a false economy. Current mattress was over £1k and has been money well spent.

OxanaVorontsova · 05/11/2022 17:49

I have Emma mattress, love it and wouldn’t swap it for anything else, always an offer to be had

ohforthelife · 05/11/2022 17:50

Hypnos ones are great and not anywhere near £1000, I also rate the IKEA Hovag which are even cheaper.

Sausagedognamedmash · 05/11/2022 17:54

I've been looking at the reconditioned Emma and Simba mattresses recently. They are a fraction of the price.

redredredredlorry · 05/11/2022 18:06

I have a simba and its turned me into of those people that misses their own bed when they go away

Londontown12 · 05/11/2022 18:13

bilbodog · 05/11/2022 18:20

Look at the wool room - all natural mattresses - wonderful. Buy when there is a sale on.

ReadyForPumpkins · 05/11/2022 18:23

I am happy with my ikea mattress.

Squishedstormtrooper · 05/11/2022 18:23

We paid a fortune for the mattress on our current bed but if I’m honest the ikea one on the guest bed is way comfier.

RedToothBrush · 05/11/2022 18:26

If you are worried consider the following: you spend a third of your life on that mattress.

The only other pieces of furniture you shouldnt really cut corners on for similar reasons are your work chair and desk if you work from home and your sofa.

Choccyp1g · 05/11/2022 18:30

In my experience, all mattresses are great when they are new, and rubbish after a few years.
Maybe the expensive ones take a bit longer to get to the rubbish stage.
I paid over a grand for a double mattress from Next, and it was heaven for as little as 18 months.

DucklingDaisy · 05/11/2022 18:31

We’ve got that ikea one everyone recommends and have no issues, my husband has had issues with more expensive mattresses in the past.

Badger1970 · 05/11/2022 18:32

We paid around £1200 for our superking mattress (Hestia one) and I've never regretted it. We've got an Dormeo Octaspring one on the spare bed and it's like a torture device... it's horribly uncomfortable. I want to throw things at the TV when the ads come on showing them!

Firstaidnovice · 05/11/2022 18:38

Another vote for IKEA. We had a much more expensive one that I found very uncomfortable but put up with for years because of the £££.
Spent ages testing lots, and the IKEA one was by far the most comfortable, and it's definitely improved my sleep.
I had definitely made the most of thinking a harder mattress was better for my back, and softer mattresses were bad quality, but actually as a side sleeper I do need something I can sink into a bit to feel supported.

Applesandcarrots · 05/11/2022 18:39

Hold on for black friday sales. Mine was 600 down from 800

I know some prices sound like a lot but they should last long, and we spend LOT of time on them. So it's an investment in a good back and sleep.

SkylightSkylight · 05/11/2022 18:42

I need a new bed. I'm prepared to spend reasonable money on it, but Norma serious money. I cannot sleep on any kind of memory foam.

I would like something that feels solid & heavy.

just no idea what to look at?!

AloysiusBear · 05/11/2022 18:43

We bought an expensive Sealy one, we also got an ikea one for the spare room for half the price. We both sleep better on the ikea one.
