To ask if I need to spend over £1k for a nice mattress?

I was looking at an ikea one for less than £400 that people kept rating

But I've been on another thread and people are gushing over their £1.5k Tempa? Mattress.

Am I really missing out that much if I only have a very modest budget? Should I splurge and push it to get a very nice one?

Good sleep is important as I don't get much of it - I'm a carer.

I haven't had a bad back since we got a Premier Inn mattress. Its nice and supportive.

AuntyMabelandPippin · 05/11/2022 18:46

I've no idea, but my neighbour just spent over £4000 on hers!

Not sure why she had to tell me though...

Hellsmovie · 05/11/2022 18:47

You can a premier inn mattress for 599 king size.

Decent quality mattress . Never had a bad sleep on one

stuntbubbles · 05/11/2022 18:49

If there’s two people on the mattress the best money you can ever spend is a zip-link one so you each have the mattress you prefer and you don’t bounce around when DP gets into bed. United by a good feather topper; personally can’t abide memory foam and the off-gassing gives me a migraine.

drkpl · 05/11/2022 18:50

A few years ago I bought one from ikea for £80. It’s very comfortable

Murdoch1949 · 05/11/2022 18:51

I bought a Tempur top of the range memory foam mattress, 10 years ago, cost £3000+ but is as good as new still. Fantastic sleeps on it. Wouldn't hesitate to buy another one.

jetadore · 05/11/2022 18:52

John Ryan by design. Have bought 3 from there and would recommend.

whirlyhead · 05/11/2022 18:54

Tried an Emma mattress, it was rock hard so I gave it away. I have a simba which is ok, but after 5 years it’s gone very saggy so I wouldn’t recommend. My tempur mattress is nearly 20 years old and it’s so comfortable it’s unbelievable. A friend with bone cancer who never sleeps well recently stayed and slept on it, and went out and bought one the next day. It’s the first time she’d slept well in years. Well worth the money.

Dinodigger · 05/11/2022 18:56

We just recently got a Tempur Cloud mattress and omg it is amazing. You can find good deals on ex display ones and Tempur also have an outlet type page on their website too

I bought a sumptuous 4000 pocket sprung mattress off Wowcher in February for £209. It's bloody lovely!

Kualma · 05/11/2022 18:59

I spent nearly £6k on my mattress 🙈. It was from John Lewis and now every bed I sleep in that isn’t mine gives me a back ache!

ivegotthisyeah · 05/11/2022 19:06

Look at nectar sorted my back right out

I would always go for a sprung mattress with a memory foam top layer, and buy a really good quality mattress protector to keep it clean. There are always good offers on Wowcher and Go Groupie. Ds got a really nice bed and mattress on Wowcher for less that £500. It is a king sized, side opening ottoman bed with a sprung mattress. Loads of storage underneath. You just have to keep an eye out for offers/stock clearance.

This! We got a hybrid Simba which was about £850 with a voucher code, then bought a John lewis goose down topper. Money so well spent - it's amazing

Lemoncurd · 05/11/2022 19:11

Our £300 IKEA mattresses are so much better than the £1000+ one we had from John Lewis. Now have the Ikea ones on all the beds in the house.

Suzi888 · 05/11/2022 19:38

If you can afford it, get it. We have an emperor, Smeaton mattress. You spend so much time in bed, it’s well worth being comfortable.

Cinders88 · 05/11/2022 19:48

We spent around £400 on a sprung mattress with memory foam top layer, and it’s so comfortable! It’s around 40cm thick, so we do need to shop around for bedding that fits. We’ve had it for nearly five years, and it’s going very strong! Definitely wouldn’t fancy going back to just memory foam.

Topbird29 · 05/11/2022 19:50

Ours was in a black Friday sale last Nov so almost half price - think it is a slumberland.

I have Emma mattress, love it and wouldn’t swap it for anything else, always an offer to be had

I was hoping some would say this! Just ordered one and waiting for delivery…

shivawn · 05/11/2022 19:52

Got mine on Groupon for 140 and I love it.

IntrovertedPenguin · 05/11/2022 19:52

Whatever you do don't get one from B&M.... I made that mistake and regretted it ever since.

Currently saving for a Emma mattress!

thedevilsavocado · 05/11/2022 19:56

We all have Ikea mattresses having spent a fortune on others previously. The Ikea ones are so much more comfy, we love them.

Drywhitefruitycidergin · 05/11/2022 20:03

I adore my silentnight geltex mattress so much that when we had a room swap around & I downsized to a double i sought out the same one again in double size. It was under £400 now but is an old model
Personally I hated the Tempur mattress my uncle used to have. Would happily have a Hypnos Premier Inn but they had a long lead time when I was looking.

Pinkywoo · 05/11/2022 20:04

I hate my Emma mattress, it's two years old and has a big lump down the middle, and is much too soft and bouncy. I'm waiting for a good sale to go back to a sprung with memory foam top (is that what's called a hybrid now?).

Freeasabird76 · 05/11/2022 20:08

I've had this for 3 months and love how comfortable it is,my daughters agree and my brother in law was impressed too.

We bought an expensive Sealy one, we also got an ikea one for the spare room for half the price. We both sleep better on the ikea one.

Which ikea one did you get ?
