To ask if I need to spend over £1k for a nice mattress?

I was looking at an ikea one for less than £400 that people kept rating

But I've been on another thread and people are gushing over their £1.5k Tempa? Mattress.

Am I really missing out that much if I only have a very modest budget? Should I splurge and push it to get a very nice one?

Good sleep is important as I don't get much of it - I'm a carer.

@Freeasabird76 where was that from??

BibiThree · 05/11/2022 20:34

We paid a crazy amount for our Tempur mattress and my only regret is that it has ruined hotel stays/holidays for me. No bed compares to my own. Worth every single penny.

bedhedd · 05/11/2022 20:35

I think the important thing is to find what you like.
I had a brilliant memory foam one for £300, told the salesman I wanted the feel of a brick wrapped in a towel and it was perfect for me. Too hot for my partner though, he can't do memory foam :(
Our local dreams has a computer bed you can lie on, be scanned and it tells you what should suit.
Or spend a night in a Travelodge and see if you like the Sleepeezee Dreamer.

I don't think you have to spend a fortune, just don't waste money on one that doesn't suit you.

Breziegrass · 05/11/2022 20:38

Spent about that OP on a Brook and Wild mattress. You spend a majority of your life in bed so why would you skimp.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 05/11/2022 20:39

I've got an Eve memory foam one. I paid about £500 for it I think (they seem to have gone out of business but I'm sure you can still get the actual mattresses). It's nice and firm.

SmallestInTheClass · 05/11/2022 20:39

We got one for about 700-800 from John Lewis. Went and tried them in store. We tried a memory foam one (can't remember which but like Emma or Simba). It had to go after a few weeks as it gave me night sweats (luckily got a full refund as 100 day trial and they give it to homeless charity).

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 05/11/2022 20:40

About 13 years ago I bought one with memory foam on springs for about a grand and it’s still going good and it’s bloody comfortable.

WoolyMammoth55 · 05/11/2022 20:41

Ours was £700 in the sale for a super king warren evans handmade number...

In the spare room we have a £250 Ikea jobbie and honestly if you asked me to choose I'd say the Ikea one edges it!

Really worth checking out the ikea range OP, they are so madly comfortable.

PurpleFlower1983 · 05/11/2022 20:43

The premier inn Hypnos one is a great budget option. We have one in our spare room and it’s lovely.

Maria1982 · 05/11/2022 20:43

I also rate Hypnos. Have had more expensive ones in last and they were not as good. Hypnos not cheap but well under the £1k threshold
Only other thing I would say is beware of switching to memory foam mattress without trying first. My mum has one and hates it!(I do too- it’s unyielding!)

PurpleFlower1983 · 05/11/2022 20:44

We have a 2k Hypnos in our room but I would be just as happy with the other one.

Salome61 · 05/11/2022 20:48

My daughter chose an OTTY memory foam mattress with a cool gel top, it's comfortable and you don't get too hot. As it has the gel top, you cannot use an electric blanket. Was £400 but I got an offer on it about three years ago.

Fluffygreenslippers · 05/11/2022 20:52

I currently have a lovely one from Ikea that was £300 odd? And the one before that was also from Ikea and was less. We replaced it as we were moving house & were worried about bringing mould with us but the bed & mattress were 8 years old and still in good condition.

Salome61 · 05/11/2022 21:05

We had an Ikea Sultan for years, it was really comfortable.

LoraOldSpot · 05/11/2022 21:08

Ours was £299 (bought recently). We were really unsure what mattress to get, stayed in a hotel and bed was soooo comfy so had a look and found it online for that price :)

mogtheexcellent · 05/11/2022 21:11

Sealy posturepedic here. Our last one was 330 online. We can flip and rotate it.

Hate memory foam and struggle to sleep on the popular hotel mattresses.

Dallimore · 05/11/2022 21:12

Our super king was about £300 from Dunelm recently and it’s the comfiest mattress we’ve had so far!

MrsSirusBlack · 05/11/2022 21:22

Otty had 50% off just now

LindseyHoyleSpeaks · 05/11/2022 21:26

@Squishedstormtrooper - exactly the same experience. Our old IKEA mattress was amazing compared with our nice new expensive one 🙄

Yabado · 05/11/2022 21:33

I bought a waterbed years ago - maybe 12 -14 years
I think it cost about 1k and it’s still going strong never needed to replace anything
It’s heated as well so when I get into bed it’s always lovely and warm and cost about £1.50 a week to keep it warm 😂

JiggingJigsaws · 05/11/2022 21:38

IKEA hovag is the business, as mentioned by a pp. it's recommended by Which? Magazine

Imamumgetmeoutofhere · 05/11/2022 21:42

We spent about £4000 on a Tempur superking mattress and then a tv bed frame. Seems so very extravagant now but it's money very well spend and I sleep so well now. My back, neck, hips and legs are no longer in bits. We bought it about 8 years ago now

Tillsforthrills · 05/11/2022 21:50

Can’t find any Hovag mattresses on the IKEA website

LikeTearsInRain · 05/11/2022 21:56

I bought a mid range pocket spring mattress with a memory foam layer on top. Cost about £500 for a king size I believe. Have had compliments from everyone who has shared a bed with me the last 3 years.

My DM has a tempur. It feels like you literally sink into it and is awful to me. She used to complain about previous mattresses and still complains about this one, having bought into the hype that it would solve her problems - clearly not.
