To ask if I need to spend over £1k for a nice mattress?

I was looking at an ikea one for less than £400 that people kept rating

But I've been on another thread and people are gushing over their £1.5k Tempa? Mattress.

Am I really missing out that much if I only have a very modest budget? Should I splurge and push it to get a very nice one?

Good sleep is important as I don't get much of it - I'm a carer.

John Ryan By Design have fabulous mattresses and the website explains what to look for if buying elsewhere.
I bought one from them and it's still like new six years later.

Freeasabird76 · 05/11/2022 21:59

@SkylightSkylight Dunelm.

Excited101 · 05/11/2022 22:00

I’ve had my IKEA Sultan for about 12 years now and I still love it. We’re upgrading to a super king soon though so will have to change it, think it’ll be a John Lewis one as DP likes a firmer one and they have a fab range you can lie on to try.

gogohmm · 05/11/2022 22:02

Memory foam feels lovely BUT I began to seriously overheat a couple of years after buying it (£1500 10 years ago!) peri menopause does that to you. Since splitting from Exh I returned to a standard mattress and no longer overheat

HerReputationMadeItDifficultToProceed · 05/11/2022 22:08

We got this earlier this year in the sale and it's in an even cheaper sale now. Beautiful. Best sleep I've ever had.

Sunshineandrainbow · 05/11/2022 22:15

Look at sleepsoul I love mine

Athenen0ctua · 05/11/2022 22:19

My ikea one is excellent and it was less than £100. I don't sleep as well anywhere else. I've had it 5 years and it's just as comfortable as when I bought it.

elephantseal · 05/11/2022 22:20

Go and try mattresses before you buy! Knowledgeable staff will be able to guide you to which matters suits you best!

PeanuttyButter · 05/11/2022 22:35

Another one for John Ryan by Design. We paid 1.4k for a king-size natural fibre one, my side is firm and DH medium. But we've had it 5 years now and it's just as good as when we got it.

Utini · 05/11/2022 22:45

Another vote for John Ryan By Design, they provide loads of advice on their website so worth a look even if you don't end up buying from them. They are very good value compared to similar mattresses from other brands.

LostAtTheCrossRoad · 05/11/2022 22:45

Our current mattress was £50 shy of £2k and tbh I'm not convinced it's worth it. It's a Harrison Spinks 4500 springs with their luxury wool fillings etc. It's lovely but we also had a Hypnos in the past that was half the price and about 1200 springs that was absolutely just as comfortable. I do think it's worth spending £800-£1000 on king size. Bases extra.

Itsabitnotcold · 05/11/2022 22:47

I got one from dunelm for like 150 quid, memory foam top. It's lovely. I could not spend a grand!

Meltingsocks · 05/11/2022 22:49

We all have Eve's including the spare room! Ppl LOVE staying in that room!

AltheaVestr1t · 05/11/2022 22:53

I bought a Casper 4/5 years ago, I think it was about £500 which was a huge extravagance at the time, but it was worth every penny!

Southwig22 · 05/11/2022 22:55

You don't need to spend £1k, but you do get what you pay for so don't go for a super cheapy.

There are lots of mattress review and recommendation sites - you'll find actually the tempur mattress is pretty old tech now and not so great, for example.

You will need to consider your requirements and which suits you best - sprung Vs memory foam, hard Vs soft etc.

I have the Emma mattress and it's great - even one night on a different mattress leaves me with neck and shoulder pain.

Managinggenzoclock · 05/11/2022 23:01

We bought a medium price mattress and an expensive memory topper for us and our guest bed. Guests always comment how comfortable it is. I think you can over pay. From testing them out in the shop I’d say there are diminishing returns with going up the price bands.

SkylightSkylight · 05/11/2022 18:42

I need a new bed. I'm prepared to spend reasonable money on it, but Norma serious money. I cannot sleep on any kind of memory foam.

I would like something that feels solid & heavy.

just no idea what to look at?!

@SkylightSkylight
I just ordered this - quite a long lead time so it won't be delivered until January. There's an offer on ATM.

lochmaree · 05/11/2022 23:11

we like the ikea hovag.

allboysherebutme · 05/11/2022 23:14

You should always buy a good mattress/bed and a good pair of shoes because if you are not in one you are in the other.
I always buy my mattresses in half price sales, usually from warren Evans. X

Nat6999 · 05/11/2022 23:16

Mine is a Shires pocket sprung memory foam mattress, it is £495 now & is like sleeping on a cloud.

PickAChew · 05/11/2022 23:16

We have a ££££ vispring which was like sleeping on a cloud for 18 months or so, then went pffftttthhh. Unfortunately, we both need a softer mattress and neither of us like memory foam and we found nothing else that we liked in budget.

Ds1 has an IKEA mattress with a memory foam topper. He likes it and I probably would have when I was younger but I couldn't lie on it without pain, now.

BoneyEmm · 05/11/2022 23:21

We've just moved and have replaced all our manky mattresses with shiny new ones

I was tempted by the expensive mattresses, I really wanted an Eve Premium hybrid but couldn't afford it

Went to Ikea and tried out the mattresses there, their pocket spring mattresses were really comfy.

Ended up getting the eve premium hybrid on an online auction for half the price (not eBay, an auction house) and it was perfect, we love it.

larkstar · 05/11/2022 23:23

@lochmaree @ohforthelife @JiggingJigsaws @Tillsforthrills
There are no search results for Hovag on the Ikea site - I have king size bed frame on order and need a matress! Maybe Hovag is a discontinued range?

Saracen · 05/11/2022 23:24

@SkylightSkylight I'm with you, I only like sprung mattresses. They are getting harder to find. Which? reviewed mattresses last year and gave high ratings to the Ikea Hamarvik despite its cheap price. I decided to take a chance on it, reasoning that if I hated it I could get another and not be too much out of pocket.

We all still love it a year later and bought an additional one. £99 for a single. Only downside is that apparently if you share a bed with someone, you feel every movement they make. I have been considering replacing our king mattress with two of these singles to avoid that problem!

Purpleberet · 05/11/2022 23:31

We’ve had an IKEA one for a few years and we think it’s pretty good.
If I had the money to spare I’d love to get one from somewhere like Vispring or Harrison Spinks! We spend so much time in bed I feel like it’s probably something you should spend a lot on if you can afford it.

is the Tempur one handmade in the UK? It’s not a brand I would consider buying if I was going to spend £££s
