AIBU to think when staying in hotel should not go down to breakfast in pyjamas

Last night stayed overnight in a City Centre hotel and a family all came down to breakfast wearing their pyjamas, looking like they had all jumped out of bed , it was 9am so still had time to shower and dress before breakfast finished , AIBU to think this is not appropriate

The only thing "wrong" with PJs is some kind of breaking of societal norms. They and the people wearing them aren't any more dirty than those in ordinary clothing.

Sparklingbrook · 07/11/2022 07:54

Well I look forward to the day I witness pjs at a hotel breakfast in RL. I will definitely notice. 👀

I’ve yet to witness a debacle on a bus that I hear about on here, I would like to see one of those first hand too.

CantSleepCountingSheep · 07/11/2022 07:56

Scummy.

nicknamehelp · 07/11/2022 07:58

I have just realised what a slob I am as if staying in a hotel I get dressed but don't brush my teeth as I do that after breakfast. If I brush them before breakfast tastes funny.

OohMrBingley · 07/11/2022 08:05

The first thing I do when I get out of bed is brush my teeth. Then I shower, get dressed, make the bed, yada, yada - by the time I make my coffee, the mintyness has subsided.

It doesn’t feel nice showering and wandering around with morning breath.

I’ve never seen anyone in pjs at a hotel breakfast either. I’ve stated in Premier Inns but can’t remember having breakfast at them.

Anyone who hasn't had a Premier Inn breakfast has missed a treat. Never seen anyone in pyjamas there though

Personally I'd mind my own business and couldn't care less what anyone else is wearing. But maybe your family is that dull and boring you had nothing else to be getting on with at breakfast.

Why do you have to be dull and boring to take an interest in your surroundings and comment on them?

Surely it's the insular families or the ones who just all stare at separate screens that are the dull and boring ones?

Sparklingbrook · 07/11/2022 08:19

It is interesting that people that take an interest and notice things in the world around them are the ones deemed ‘dull and boring’. Confused

BankyWollocks · 07/11/2022 08:30

Yep , I'm neither dull and boring but people who wear pj's in a dining room look like an attention seeking prats

BadLad · 07/11/2022 08:32

And it's not as if it's a tiny, easily missable detail that you'd have to scrutinize people thoroughly to notice. Civilized people look up from their meal from time to time. I don't think I've ever had a meal and been completely oblivious to the other people in the room. It must take some serious troughing, munching, slurping, pigging out and all the other words used by mumsnetters to describe people who eat in cinemas if you wouldn't so much as glance at other diners.

Needaholidaypronto · 07/11/2022 08:32

Eww grim, everyone else having to look at them in their sweaty jammies. Get washed and dressed before going out in public, it’s not hard.

Indeed. I can't imagine a world where I didn't notice the people around me. Not notice people wearing pyjamas in public? How can you not see them?

Lunificent · 07/11/2022 08:41

I’m fairly laissez faire about social rules but I draw the line at pyjamas in public.

DP won’t clean teeth till after breakfast for the same reason. I brush before and after. I’d rather wait for the mintiness to subside a little than go down breathing my overnight mouth fumes on everyone.

Withmayo · 07/11/2022 08:46

So many people seem to lack the most basic of social skills. Totally inappropriate.

FootfallFootball · 07/11/2022 08:49

There's no hygiene problem with this for me. But I prefer people to behave differently in public to private, and for me this violates that. It is as if the family are expecting everyone else to live in their home with them. It is a shared public space and I think they should adopt social norms.

blondiecurly · 07/11/2022 08:55

To be fair, it depends on your Pjs, but I don’t think it’s a huge issue. People walk around hotels in their bathrobes all the time on the way to the pool, etc.

I think if staying in a hotel that has a spa or pool it wouldn't be entirely surprising to see some adults in a robe going back to their room. But we are talking a whole family in pyjamas at breakfast at a Premier Inn.

BankyWollocks · 07/11/2022 09:04

@blondiecurly on their way to the pool is completely different scenario

Fizbosshoes · 07/11/2022 09:30

I would probably notice (if they came I at a similar time) and possibly pass comment as (for me) it would be somewhat unexpected. Similarly if someone came in wearing a tuxedo or mankini at breakfast time, I might comment!

Beyond that I probably wouldn't give it another thought.
I wouldn't consider wearing pyjamas outside my room in a hotel for any reason other than perhaps a fire drill but there are a lot of assumptions being made
-pjs are sweaty or dirty

  • person hasn't showered or brushed teeth
  • they probably aren't wearing underwear

Any of the above could be true with conventional clothes?

If you see me at a hotel breakfast, I have 100% pulled on clothes over my pyjamas. Possibly just yesterday's trousers.

I can't fathom caring about what someone is wearing. I suppose I might make a joke if they turned up dressed as Elvis, or something.

blondiecurly · 07/11/2022 09:59

@Sparklingbrook When you stay as a couple, things are very different than when you stay with your children. Please don't expect kids to get up early and ready by 9 a.m. on their holiday, especially if they slept late the night before.

Thanks for that but I have stayed in many hotels with my DC over the years and we have always managed to not go down to breakfast in our nightwear.

BankyWollocks · 07/11/2022 10:19

I going to wear a gimp suit to breakfast then if people think standard's don't matter

Me too but sometimes because they went to sleep in their clothes having fallen asleep during evening entertainment. Better than leaving them in the room I always think.
