Last night stayed overnight in a City Centre hotel and a family all came down to breakfast wearing their pyjamas, looking like they had all jumped out of bed , it was 9am so still had time to shower and dress before breakfast finished , AIBU to think this is not appropriate

I don’t sweat at night

Are you Prince Andrew?

I didn't realise it was such a big issue to so many. I'd never go to breakfast in pj's but I wouldn't necessarily brush my teeth first (would do that afterwards). I am curious though, what is acceptable attire for a hotel breakfast?

Clothes?

CurlyhairedAssassin · 06/11/2022 19:15

It feels like some people just aren't used to eating in hotels and don't know what "the form" is. We went to a hotel recently, it was a fairly nice country hotel. We went for a drink in the bar before dinner on a Saturday night and were taken aback to see a couple sitting there having a drink in white towelling robes and slippers. 😂We are fairly casual dressers ourselves but I thought that was extreme. I think they had come from the spa the other end of the hotel, but the spa had their own eating and drinking area so why they hadn't ordered their drinks from there I don't know. It was just wierd to see others coming in all dressed up in heels etc with full makeup meeting groups for big birthdy celebrations etc and there was them sitting in their bathrobes.

Later at dinner there was another couple sitting there intheir sweaty gym/sauna gear. The bloke had sliders on his feet. I mean, this wasn't early on, like 5pm, when you might expect things to be more casual, with kid around etc. It was proper grownups dinner time, 8pm, with you know, people dressed in normal clothes, some slightly smarter than others, which is fine. But why not get changed out of your gym gear if you're going to dine at dinner time in a nice restaurant?

Absolutely , my life is manic if I get the chance to sleep in a 5 star hotel then I’m doing it on my terms. I don’t sweat at night and only smell of the body cream is have applied the night before. What the hell to people think happens to you while you sleep 🧐😜

You really are funny.

So if you magically ‘don’t sweat at night’, I guess you never need to wash your bed linen. Nor your pyjamas, for that matter. Delightful!

hallowedweens · 06/11/2022 19:30

I would not ever! Eat in public in my PJs but a few years ago in a a European city, there were quite a few non Brits in PJs and dressing gowns at breakfast

Bubblesandsqueak1 · 06/11/2022 19:33

Wouldn't bother me is the slightest and I I be tempted to do it myself pj's are clothes so,

celticprincess · 06/11/2022 19:34

I now take a porridge pot and croissant to hotels that don’t so room service so I can eat in my pyjamas. I don’t eat much and hate paying hotel breakfast prices unless it’s all included in the room rate. I like to shower and get clean after I’ve eaten. Many years ago I did go to breakfast once in pyjamas but soon realised it wasn’t the done thing. I was young and hadn’t done much hotel staying. When staying somewhere for a longer holiday with the family where breakfast is included we do get dressed.

Stealthfart · 06/11/2022 19:35

It’s scruffy AF and not caring about stuff like this is one of the reasons why our country is going to shit and we are a laughing stock.

Yes pyjamas are clothes-night clothes, for bed.

drawstringbags · 05/11/2022 17:00

It's something I wouldn't do.
My reasoning would be because I prefer to keep pyjamas clean by not sitting in places used by the general public. It wouldn't bother me if others did it though, because it doesn't effect me in any way.

Exactly my thoughts. In the same way I wouldn't sit on the bed in day clothes!
But couldn't care less about what other people do as long as they aren't sitting on my bed!!

Once stayed in a country hotel and two young women came down to dinner with their hair in rollers!!

I'd assume they would be sleeping in them for a wedding the next day, I think.

SylvieB74 · 06/11/2022 19:45

I wouldn’t mind as long as they were good looking and especially if they weren’t chubby, just while we’re judging

Beancounter1 · 06/11/2022 19:46

It is not about the style or fabric of the clothes.
Nor is it about whether someone has washed or showered.

It is about the underpants.

Either they don't wear underpants with pjs at night, in which case they are coming to breakfast with only one layer of fabric between their bits and the chair - yuk.

Or they do wear underpants with pjs, in which case they have been wearing the same ones all night - yuk. Who would in the morning take off the pj bottoms, change pants, then put the same pj bottoms back on? You may as well put fresh leggings /joggers on.

And for many women the bra has the same issue - either worn all night, or not worn at all when it is needed. (Of course, some women never wear one and don't need to, but many do.)

OohMrBingley · 06/11/2022 19:47

As for the pp who had her bridesmaids go down for breakfast in matching pyjamas - if my friend was a bride and asked us to do this, I’d say ‘yes’ of course, because it’s her day and what she wants.

But I would be really uncomfortable and would not like it.

If someone had thrown on clothes to go doen for breakfast who's to say they've replaced pants then either? Especially if they are going back for a shower. Is an extra half hour in one pair of pants really such a huge problem and how will that affect you while sitting at a different table?

liveforsummer · 06/11/2022 19:54

I definitely don't sweat at night. I'd love to ever be warm enough 😆. I change bedding and pj's for other reasons but sweat certainly in any a problem especially on loose fitting clothes that don't press against my pits

Galletaconpeineta · 06/11/2022 19:56

I work in a hotel and I never allow these kind of things. People need to be dressed and wearing shoes. IT IS NOT YOUR HOUSE. Besides, some people have ok ones but others come half naked…. And then do I have to decided which one is appropriate and which one isn’t? No exceptions

If someone is wearing normal 'day' clothes, they may or may not have changed their pants recently, but I wouldn't give it any thought - why would it even cross my mind?

If someone is wearing pjs in a public place, then it is very highly likely that they either have not changed their pants or are not wearing any. The pjs are a big red flag as they are not normal day wear, so it is impossible not to imagine one of the two scenarios.

How will it affect me? Because seeing the pjs in public makes me think of the possibilities, so makes my stomach churn.

We stayed in a hotel in Kensington this year and were quite surprised when someone came down in their PJs and dressing gown. Personally I think it's just laziness.

WTAFhappened123 · 06/11/2022 20:10

Omg please worry less about what other people are doing… your life will be so
much easier

antelopevalley · 06/11/2022 20:15

I do not think it is okay. But it is becoming more common.

StoneofDestiny · 06/11/2022 20:16

It's lazy, inappropriate, attention seeking and unnecessary.
What next - pop down in bra and pants?

amispeakingintongues · 06/11/2022 20:18

This was shocking maybe 10 years ago but it’s common place now. Surprised how horrified some people are at the very idea as if its unfathomable and they’ve never witnessed it before…i’ve seen it in sooo many hotels and more so the luxury ones. I’d love to know which culture has normalised it, just out of interest.

roarfeckingroarr · 06/11/2022 20:21

Silk negligee? Not appropriate.

Rough looking, saggy old PJs? Not appropriate

A T-shirt (with bra underneath) and tracksuit / lounge wear trousers? Not a problem
