Mexican-themed NYE party - racist, right?

BobLobla · 05/11/2022 13:20

Just been invited by very good friends to their NYE party which promises to have a Mexican theme and everyone must wear a long droopy moustache and a sombrero. Already I am cringing as I think this is pretty racist. Don't think I’ll go… but do I say something privately to my friends about the fact that this seems really off? Do I just dip out and not say anything to avoid awkwardness?

Don't be stupid- it's just a bit of fun and no Mexicans are going to be offended because I doubt there'll be any there!

Would you be offended by Mexicans having an English themed party and coming dressed as Morris dancers and serving fish and chips or roast beef? I couldn't are less!

Ah ffs, I guess you'd shout White Lives Matter, as well?!

Some much stupid here. IT's just so.....white British!

Cant see how its offensive in anyway. I'm Scottish and don't see people wearing kilts and ginger hair hats when dressing as Scots offensive. People genuinely want to be offended on behalf of others about everything these days its SO boring. And Mexican isn't a race 🙄

Georgeskitchen · 05/11/2022 13:37

Have you asked any Mexicans if they would be offended? Are there any Mexicans invited?

Fucks sake.....Always one....

Itloggedmeoutagain · 05/11/2022 14:27

I've just watched the video and found it really interesting.
Getting offended on others' behalf is getting out of hand.
And all these comments saying do you know nothing about the culture.... Is that just to make them feel inferior?
The mexicans in the video liked it. That tells us all we need to know.

And it contained actual Mexican people saying they don't find the costume offensive.

This platform have previously had videos pulled and demonetized from YouTube for blatant lies, hate speech and pro panga. It’s been supported by the Supreme Court.

Regardless what you think about the Mexican Party, you shouldn’t feel so great about supporting this video. You’re aligning with the nasty people

Scottish person doesn't see anything wrong with wearing sombero and droopy moustache.....fancy that....

No more Cinco De mayo celebrations allowed in the U.S anymore either so.

Agreeing with them on one thing isn't a wholesale endorsement on everything they do for god sake.

Agree. I've had many friends dress up in the stereotypical Welsh gear over the years and always had a good giggle. No need to be offended at this OP. If you are though just decline and let them get on with it x

How they are telling to dress = moustache = racist

Heaven forbid someone not getting offended on behalf of others who may not even be offended in the first place. Go find an actual hobby, being offended on behalf of others and virtue signalling isn't a real one.

@Arayes no chick it was about 2 years ago. Some people like to have actual fun you know...🙄🙄

@MrsTerryPratchett

Some people ARE unhappy about cultural stereotypes being used to entertain. Just because you can find some who aren't, doesn't make it OK.

As a number of posters have said, how come no-one seems to give a shit about people dressing up as Irish, Scottish, Welsh, Australian, Canadian, Scandinavian etc etc etc? There's a running theme in the 4 people who are on those pics you posted, with the 'I am a culture not a costume' thing. I think you know what it is.

They are all young people who are fed up with people dressing up as a stereotype of their culture?

Oblomov22 · 05/11/2022 14:35

No. Not racist. And I don't have a problem with the moustaches either. Sounds fab. Don't go if it bothers you.

User2145738790 · 05/11/2022 14:35

OP seems to have disappeared. Fancy dress that.

I always get sucked into arsehole wind-ups.

Can we at least all agree that those are shit? Common ground and all that.

Silly me. I forgot that. I really really miss a time when everything wasn't so tribal.

YellowTreeHouse · 05/11/2022 14:37

@MrsTerryPratchett Okay, so one of your friends would be really hurt. Again, so what? Everyone’s offended by something.

Actual paid Mexicans.

that's a hell of a conspiracy theory you got there.

Tell them gently. But it’s bullshit they don’t know it’s offensive. In this day and age
