Mexican-themed NYE party - racist, right?

BobLobla · 05/11/2022 13:20

Just been invited by very good friends to their NYE party which promises to have a Mexican theme and everyone must wear a long droopy moustache and a sombrero. Already I am cringing as I think this is pretty racist. Don't think I’ll go… but do I say something privately to my friends about the fact that this seems really off? Do I just dip out and not say anything to avoid awkwardness?

YABU
Cos currently Mexicans are fair game.

What do you mean?

PBSam · 05/11/2022 13:53

I wonder if anyone Mexico is debating having an English theme and if its racist. They'd have to wear bad clothes and bad teeth and eat really bland food and moan a lot.

Would any of you care or not?

How do you know?

These lot don't care for example

Just seems like more white guilt to me.

Your post doesn't even make sense.
What on earth are you going on about.
White guilt? You think this racist party is ok? Move on.

Notimeforaname · 05/11/2022 13:55

PBSam
I was coming on to share the same video.

NameChanger001500 · 05/11/2022 13:55

I wouldnt see it as racist, its fancy dress 🤷‍♀️ and its Mexican themed. If I was invited to a Mexican themed fancy dress party I would 100% wear a moustache, one of the poncho things and a hat.

Honestly, I think most people just like to be offended over things these days

It's not the same thing at all because you are comparing White British and Mexican as the same. There is a long historical context to why as a white person you need to be more sensitive.

Thepeopleversuswork · 05/11/2022 13:56

Agree it’s tone deaf.

People eating burritos and drinking cerveza con limon, fine.

But the moustache bit is racist.

Watch the video and come back to me. It's a load of white people being offended on someone's behalf who don't care just like this thread.

You sound like one of those "All lives matter" types.

BakeSaleSunday · 05/11/2022 13:52

What do you mean?

Theres obviously a hierarchy in costume parties.

Some things are a definite no-no. Blackface.

Others are ambiguous- people still cant understand why wearing a native american headdress as a costume is not OK.
Ancient Greeks/ Roman's is ok

Mexicans havent been categorised yet.

I mean why else would they have picked it?

Evidence- see all the posts on this thread defending the choice.

schnubbins · 05/11/2022 13:58

Well I'm Irish and think St Patrick's day should be cancelled worldwide from now on .

I think everything is fine except the mustaches

Moustaches are fine on people without penises.

Notimeforaname · 05/11/2022 14:00

I just cant see a fake moustache in fancy dress being racist.

I'm Irish, people all over the world have Paddy's day parties where some dress up with fake pot bellies on, hats with crazy red hair sticking out and alcohol everywhere.

Doesn't offend me in the slightest.

Makes me smile, people are celebrating us and think we're cool enough to devote a whole party to😂

Always makes me laugh seeing tourists dressed as leprechauns walking around the Dublin pubs.

That's a very good point actually

Surely if dressing up as other cultures ect is racist then everyone dressing up in green and wearing the hats and all the fancy dress that goes with st Patrick's day is racist too, if this is the logic everyone is going by

StarDolphins · 05/11/2022 14:03

This would not bother me even a tiny bit. I just couldn’t get offended at this & if any Mexicans want to dress up as me that’s totally fine. It’s a party, that’s it. Can’t see any Mexicans being upset!

Blossomtoes · 05/11/2022 14:03

Oh and all the people wearing tartan or the 'jimmy' hats around NYE who aren't Scottish too!

2bazookas · 05/11/2022 14:04

catandcoffee · 05/11/2022 13:40

Will your friendship withstand this ?

You're basically telling your friend how to run her party.

Years ago we held a "Tarts and Vicars" party... I didn't invite any Mexicans, was this racist?

LikeTearsInRain · 05/11/2022 14:04

I’m going to one hosted by a US friend where the theme is British. We are expected to wear fake yellow, crooked teeth and Beefeater costumes.

YellowTreeHouse · 05/11/2022 14:04

Wrong. It wouldn’t be racist at all and it’s not your place to message them.
