Mexican-themed NYE party - racist, right?

BobLobla · 05/11/2022 13:20

Just been invited by very good friends to their NYE party which promises to have a Mexican theme and everyone must wear a long droopy moustache and a sombrero. Already I am cringing as I think this is pretty racist. Don't think I’ll go… but do I say something privately to my friends about the fact that this seems really off? Do I just dip out and not say anything to avoid awkwardness?

Well I'm Irish and think St Patrick's day should be cancelled worldwide from now on .

Same with Burns night when everyone wears kilts and hats with ginger wigs.

Georgeskitchen · 05/11/2022 14:05

My guess is that most folk in Mexico will be going about their business in the best way they can, rather than getting offended about a bunch of folk in a far of continent donning sombreros and drinking tequila until they pass out

Years ago we held a "Tarts and Vicars" party... I didn't invite any Mexicans, was this racist?

The tarts bit was probably a bit dodgy the vicar bit in principle sounds ok.

NameChangeForARaisin · 05/11/2022 14:06

There's been a lot of "day of the dead" parties around here, is that also considered non PC/ cultural appropriation? (genuine question).

MrsTerryPratchett · 05/11/2022 14:08

Some people ARE unhappy about cultural stereotypes being used to entertain. Just because you can find some who aren't, doesn't make it OK.

Ffs how is dressing as a Roman/Greek not in the same category as Mexican? Think we have all gone a bit mad. If you are embracing and celebrating Mexican culture I don't really see the issue they encourage you to wear sombreros etc in Mexico I can see all points of view but everything can be offensive so better not do any fancy dress at all then.

Surprise you weren’t arrested for a hate crime 😂

I’m going to one hosted by a US friend where the theme is British. We are expected to wear fake yellow, crooked teeth and Beefeater costumes.

😁😁I'm British and find this hilarious.

How do you know?

These lot don't care for example

Just seems like more white guilt to me.

I thought this exact same video. Mexicans are not woke and have a great sense of humour!

Whiskeypowers · 05/11/2022 14:11

If you are offended this is you right and just refuse the invitation.
if you are good friends then you should be able to say why and they will be able to tell you what they think.

vera99 · 05/11/2022 14:12

Spoof British stereotype.

It’s always that ones that are on the ‘fringes’ of that culture that complain the most. Probably because they are incredibly insecure over their identity

MrsTerryPratchett · 05/11/2022 14:12

Mexicans are not woke and have a great sense of humour!

Using a massive generalisation to prove stereotyping is OK. You couldn't make it up!

Ah but you are allowed to poke fun at yourself just not others.

It's not the same thing at all because you are comparing White British and Mexican as the same. There is a long historical context to why as a white person you need to be more sensitive.

Good lord, do you know NOTHING about Mexican history?

Cosycover · 05/11/2022 14:14

Jesus christ.

User2145738790 · 05/11/2022 14:14

You did well to check with all the white British people on Mumsnet. They can definitely speak for Mexicans.

VinoDino · 05/11/2022 14:14

People just LOVE to be offended. If anyone held a Scottish themed party I would fully expect see you Jimmy hats with the ginger hair, Irn Bru, kilts, cans of Tennents, the lot.

I'm sure there would be a Scottish person somewhere who would find offence but that doesn't make it offensive. N.B I'm Scottish if you hadn't guessed.

schnubbins · 05/11/2022 14:15

Nobody other than a Bavarian can come to Oktoberfest and put on aLederhosen and a Dirndl either because my husband will be very offended.

I would say if you are British, live in the UK and have only travelled to Mexico on holiday … you really know nothing about their national character

BakeSaleSunday · 05/11/2022 14:16

This is making me think of Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People About Race by Reni Eddo-Lodge
I really don't need my blood pressure raised further so logging off. Just saying in case someone messages me. Not hiding, just saving whats left of my sanity and health.

That's probably because of the lack of systematic discrimination. Stereotypes get a whole lot less funny when they adversely effect your everyday life.

If I went to such a party I would smash a glass and give the CFers a Glasgae kiss.. but not before I nicked their skag off 'em ..

canyouextrapol · 05/11/2022 14:17

I used to think I was pretty left wing. Now the wokeness has gone so far the left wing is lost to me

PurplePixies · 05/11/2022 14:17

Jeez, talk about being the woke police.
Give it a rest or you'll find yourself friendless for being a complete twat.
