Mexican-themed NYE party - racist, right?

BobLobla · 05/11/2022 13:20

Just been invited by very good friends to their NYE party which promises to have a Mexican theme and everyone must wear a long droopy moustache and a sombrero. Already I am cringing as I think this is pretty racist. Don't think I’ll go… but do I say something privately to my friends about the fact that this seems really off? Do I just dip out and not say anything to avoid awkwardness?

Well spotted that PragerU are a bunch of illiberal knobheads with a far-right evangelist Christian agenda.

It's not the same thing at all because you are comparing White British and Mexican as the same. There is a long historical context to why as a white person you need to be more sensitive.

They weren’t comparing White British, they said English which includes all races. And over a third of Mexicans are white, plus the majority is mixed race white and Native American.

Have you asked any Mexicans if they would be offended? Are there any Mexicans invited?

I hope nay Mexicans invited dress up like Jacob Rees Mogg as a parody of awful English people.

Doubtmyself · 05/11/2022 14:40

Maria Garcia on white people using somberos.

"This is how white supremacy works. It always begins with the taking — an entitled grabbing of the cultural symbols of others. A sombrero? A serape? A kimono? Cornrows? They're there for the seizing. And if such snatching is questioned — if we dare confront the audacity by which it plucks what isn't its own — then there is intimidation.

White supremacy grabs and grabs — lands, people, continents, culture — for both power and hollow amusement.

What about the innocuous celebration of cultures outside of your own? Can't well-meaning white folks just have a bowl of guacamole and some beer on Cinco de Mayo without being accused of appropriating? Well, of course.

But I try to avoid celebrations in which people who otherwise do not at all engage with Mexican culture merrily wear sombreros and serapes and chug tequila on this day. I’m not here for that, particularly in a cultural moment when hate crimes against Latinos has increased at least by 24% according to the FBI, we are harassed in public for speaking Spanish and anti-immigrant sentiment is excruciatingly blatant."

Silly me. I forgot that. I really really miss a time when everything wasn't so tribal.

We'll be accused of being racist against "tribal people" or "persons of tribe"? Or being against tribbing

Unable to find fault with the video's contents and its Mexican participants, they resorted to unfounded claims every Mexican person in the video was paid (because Mexican's have no integrity of course and will lie for money on a whim)
and tried to turn everyone's focus to the makers of the video, rather than its content.

People can do what they want. Maybe we should go back to a time when people didn't go round telling others what to do and think.

Tell them gently. But it’s bullshit they don’t know it’s offensive. In this day and age

Everything is offensive in this day and age. We need to stop mollycoddling people and start ignoring them.

They need to work on building their own resilience rather than trying to force everyone else to dance to their own tune.

Badgirlriri · 05/11/2022 14:37

What’s in the photo she’s holding up? Looks like a vampire?

It's Black-face.

No one cares about dressing up as vampires.

Mariposista · 05/11/2022 14:43

I went to a Spanish themed party and we all wore flamenco dancing outfits - is that racist too?
I have lived in Spain and they tend to wear normal clothes! But it was just a fun theme at a party, nobody was taking the mick out of Spanish people or culture.

Arayes · 05/11/2022 14:43

Do you fools really need to be told that dressing up as the oppressed isn't the same as dressing up as the oppressors?

MrsTerryPratchett · 05/11/2022 14:45

YellowTreeHouse · 05/11/2022 14:37

@MrsTerryPratchett Okay, so one of your friends would be really hurt. Again, so what? Everyone’s offended by something.

Go for it. It's not illegal nor should it be.

As my Police Officer friend often says, it's not illegal to be an arsehole. I just choose not to be one if I can help it.

The people attending this party haven't oppressed any Mexicans.

Yes! People should jsut stop being offended by racism, rather than stop being racist! You're so fucking smart, no-one ever thought of that before...

Next up, WOMEN! Stop being such pussies about sexism and misogyny, just stop being offended and get over yourself! We'll ignore you until you toughen up.

Oblomov22 · 05/11/2022 14:45

Yes. They did. In the clips posted they asked Mexicans if they found his outfit offensive. They didn't. The young Mexican student didn't either. But other young students did.

Fine line re cultural appropriation.

There is a very fine line between celebrating something in a good way and taking the piss. What happens if I throw Russian party having studied it and lived but being English?

What about my friend who is Finnish, holds a Finnish party every year, it's ok for her to do that because she's finnish? but it's not ok for me to go ti said party because I'm not?

Yanbu
Colours of the Mexican flag would have been the cheapest way to go if a dress code was necessary. The moustaches etc are stereotypes which are unhelpful and nasty.

Discovereads · 05/11/2022 14:46

MultiTulip · 05/11/2022 14:26

Is it that they’re from cultures that have historically been oppressed and ridiculed by white Europeans? Or are you saying something that is absolutely fucking racist about their skin tones?

I’m confused, here I was thinking Irish, Scottish and Welsh and been oppressed. Most of Australia is descended from prisoners just dumped there as forced labour…

Which group is the oppressed one? Arent they all?

Badgirlriri · 05/11/2022 14:46

The world has gone mad.
White people offended on other peoples behalf.

"they said English which includes all races."

Most members of the Tory party don't even think RIshi is fucking British, never mind English!

rwalker · 05/11/2022 14:47

Think the best option is if your offended ,don’t agree with it and think your friends are racist don’t go
as you have seen different people have different views on it

No more Cinco De mayo celebrations allowed in the U.S anymore either so.

This isn't true.
But having lived in Mexico for a few years it isn't a particularly celebrated day there.
It is actually a bigger celebration in the USA.
