Mexican-themed NYE party - racist, right?

BobLobla · 05/11/2022 13:20

Just been invited by very good friends to their NYE party which promises to have a Mexican theme and everyone must wear a long droopy moustache and a sombrero. Already I am cringing as I think this is pretty racist. Don't think I’ll go… but do I say something privately to my friends about the fact that this seems really off? Do I just dip out and not say anything to avoid awkwardness?

So the whole white people can't be victims of racism thing, is there a cut-off? So a Greek person can't be a victim but then a Turkish or Lebanese person can? And what if they look pretty much the same, are we going on nationality?
Maybe someone has a spreadsheet or something?

😬

Yeah this! And like a few pps have said on here today, I am SO FUCKING SICK of the tired and dreary and predictable woke agenda from the far left now. I think most people are tbh. The idea that nothing can be racist if you are white is disgusting. Shame on the people saying this! Hmm

If you were to post on certain sections of this forum that’s exactly what you’d be told in relation to white people

Justanotherlurker · 05/11/2022 21:43

this thread is quite amusing to me as I have recently been to a mexican themed holoween event, where we was all told to either dress up in typical Sombreros/Ponchos and fake moustaches or Narco crime lords, the host and most of the guests where mexican (not mexican because of distant heritage), the one person who made a fuss about 'cultural appropriation' was told bluntley to keep her white middle class guilt out of it.

A lot of the 'woke' mn posters are behind the times with what is happening among the white middle class left it seems by this thread, Mexicans have rejected the Latinx and are largely conservative that they are considered 'white passing' which is pushing them further away.

And as usual, the 'can't be racist to white people' comes up on a supposedly intelligent forum...

@OMG12 Oh dear! Blush I thought your post was actually hilarious! You know that second post will go up in a puff of smoke too now right? Grin😬 (Coz you mentioned THAT particular girl's name!)

you really couldn’t make it up! Off to watch monty Python for some sanity😂

The ‘fix’ wasn’t needed, as the ‘to him’ clearly implies that this is his opinion.

Stop speaking for minorities Purple.

Minorities? Mexican nationals are now a recognised minority in the UK? 😆

Boiledpotatowitchbitch · 05/11/2022 22:52

God this is an argument that will go on till the end of time with noone ever admitting anything see ya

Is it OK to go to a party dressed as a "French person" in stripy top, moustache, onions round neck and beret?

Asking for a friend*

*OK, this is my planned costume for my friend's Europe themed party. But now I am doubting myself based on this thread.

The stripy top, onions and beret are fine. It’s the moustache that marks you out as racist.

vera99 · 05/11/2022 23:04

I would like to ask Sir Keir Starmer for his barrister's view on all this. It's far worse in the US though where picking a side would be much more relevant IMHO as a white privileged middle-class woman.

Because of Hitler. Duh.

No costumes of Mexicans, Vikings, porn stars, Salvador Dali, or Nietzche.

mathanxiety · 06/11/2022 03:03

So now consciousness of racism is 'American influenced'.

That's an interesting direction to take the conversation on racism and cuktural appropriation.

I also note that the reference to American influence doesn't have a positive tone.

Genuine question - but why? Why is the moustache racist? I am not having a go at all, but I don't understand.

secretllama · 06/11/2022 06:40

Yeah I'd also like to know the logic why moustaches make Mexican and French fancy dress racist 😆

It's blatantly obvious moustaches in general are racist. Movember is a white supremacist movement.

pewtypie · 06/11/2022 07:04

You’re taking certain aspects of Mexican culture, like sombreros and sarapes and moustache are saying they represent all of Mexican culture.

You wouldn’t say “I think all Mexicans wear a sombrero and a serape, have a moustache”, so why is it ok to imply this by wearing the costume because it’s just for fun?

And where is the harm in that? It's silly, yes.

pewtypie · 06/11/2022 07:12

@NutellaEllaElla it’s harmful peddling stereotypes of minorities. It may just be silliness for you but stereotypes harm minorities.

But everyone knows not all Mexicans walk around wearing sombreros 24/7. How is it harmful I don't get it.

pewtypie · 06/11/2022 07:24

Because when you wear a sombrero as fancy dress you’re saying ‘this is what a Mexican wears and I am not one’. You are othering Mexicans by wearing things like sombreros which have a deeper, racist meaning when worn by white people.

You don’t get it because you value your right to have silly fun over the feelings of the culture you are stereotyping.

NutellaEllaElla · 06/11/2022 07:28

What is the deeper racist meaning? If the people partaking don't know it, is it still racist? Does intention count for nothing? (you know it does as you mention deeper meanings) Where is the line between celebrating and denigrating?

Nope, not buying it in this case. You enjoy your virtue signalling moral superiority.

What is the meaning? I'm a huge F1 fan and the last race was the Mexican GP pretty much every driver was wearing a sombrero at some point. Is that racist?

I don’t believe a load of Mexican people held a party and told you to wear fake moustaches. Such obvious bullshit and that’s before one person apparently attempted the party and then made a fuss about cultural appropriation.

WishfulWanda · 06/11/2022 07:33

OMG, are you kidding?? Is this a joke?? There’s a video on TikTok doing the rounds right now regarding just thing. A guy goes up to a load of woke 20 somethings with another guy wearing the costume you’ve just described. The woke 20 somethings are spluttering calling it ‘disgraceful’ and ‘cultural misappropriation’. Cut to the TikTok man and the man in the costume going up to 50 year old Mexican men in Mexico (I believe) He asked what they thought. They thought it was fine, no problem, were laughing and one of them wanted to wear the sombrero.

Get off your high horse and stop being so utterly ridiculous woman!
