I guess it depends whether it's a meal or a starter?
I have a whole tin for lunch but nothing with it. If I had bread half a tin would do.
I made spicy bean soup today and had two big bowls for lunch, but that's all.

I assume the 'serves' two means as a light appitizer before the main course... soup has always been a classic light starter rather than a main in resteraunts and dinner parties.

It says serves two to get round the sugar and calories limits on food items sold

Its why even on individually wrapped items the packaging will sometimes say ‘serves two’

This is mumsnet so one tin and a slice of bread betwen a family of four is probably considered ample remember!

To keep them going for a fortnight

LucyFox · 01/11/2022 13:31

For lunch I’d happily split a tin of soup with someone else as that’s enough for a light meal - but I often eat soup as a main meal so then it’s a full tin & usually a cheese sandwich with it!

Blueuggboots · 01/11/2022 13:31

Nope!

SporkAndMonday · 01/11/2022 13:31

Is a can the one with a ring pull and a tin needs a tin opener?

lannistunut · 01/11/2022 13:31

At risk of being like Goldilocks, I think half a tin is too little but a full tin is too much. I would like about 300g, so would have two tins between three people.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 01/11/2022 13:32

It's a full tin here for all of us and that includes an 8 and almost 11 year old! Half a tin is nothing!

lannistunut · 01/11/2022 13:33

I haven't eaten soup from a tin for about 20 years though, so maybe I am out of practice.

Tomatoeplantpants · 01/11/2022 13:33

I’m a full tin AND a sandwich girl here. That’s lunch, not enough for dinner.

Higglydy · 01/11/2022 13:34

3/4 tin (with bread, butter and cheese) is perfect which is annoying because what to do with the other 1/4?

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 01/11/2022 13:36

Full tin and a sandwich or toast with hummus. I'll eat tinned soup AND I make my own because I have the time, but making your own isn't inherently more superior.

SuperCamp · 01/11/2022 13:37

A tin between 2 in our house - now and when I was growing up.

With maybe 2 slices of sliced bread or a chunky slice of sourdough.

Followed by an apple or similar.

I am also fascinated by sausage portions on MN. Two standard fat 'Finest or similar sausages per person, here, but I see many eat 3 or 4.

How do people afford the food bills?

My partner and I regularly share a tin of soup for lunch at a weekend. He has quite a lot of bread with it; I have cheese, pickled onion and some crisps. Never occurred to me to eat the whole tin at once, but I prefer small portions.

I grow veg and make a lot of my own soup, but still love classic Heinz vegetable.

You put crisps in soup?

Chesure · 01/11/2022 13:37

That's what it says on the tin but that only equates to 83 calories in the one I usually have. Even with a couple of slices of bread that's not enough energy for lunch never mind dinner.

I have a full can for lunch, no bread or butter.

For dinner I would have a full can plus bread and butter.

HanSB · 01/11/2022 13:38

My 5 year old would have half a tin and my 8 year old a full tin. We only buy tomato soup which is a more liquid soup. They have with 1/2 slices of toast. For beans/hoops we all have half a tin each as it's more substantial.

alwayscheery · 01/11/2022 13:39

Half a tin Would be a starter .
A whole tin or a carton of Covent Garden soup for lunch or a light meal .

GnomeDePlume · 01/11/2022 13:40

I don't understand homemade soup. Who looks into a bag of shopping and thinks 'What this needs is diluting and boiling until it's a watery mush'?

Or half a Waitrose soup, they're pretty substantial with bread on the side; epecially the lentil ones.

savehannah · 01/11/2022 13:41

DH and I just had half a tin each with two pieces chunky bread each. It wasn't exactly a filling lunch and I might have a packet of crisps as well but it's enough for a small meal when we're having a main meal later. If there are three of us, I find two tins between 3 makes a pretty good serving.

I do make my own soups too but sometimes you need a super quick grab out of the cupboard and ready in 3 minutes lunch.

Lolly49 · 01/11/2022 13:41

I am one of these teeny tiny people you talk of ,but a whole can of soup and two wholemeal rolls is just lunch.

Moonatics · 01/11/2022 13:41

Umm I usually eat a full tin. With a sandwich or naan or bread or rolls or toast.
However taking us off topic
French onion soup in tins is very sweet and unappetising, I'm sure it used to be salty?
But when I can find it in aldi they have a wonderful spiced cauliflower soup. Utterly divine with toast, the toast elevates it somehow.

Haven't seen any this year so far. Am missing it now because its turning into soup weather.

Tomato soup is the work of the devil. Disgusting stuff, all other soups are tolerable unless tomato based.

blebbleb · 01/11/2022 13:42

Full tin here. The only person I know who has half is my mum. It's a tiny amount.

iratepirate · 01/11/2022 13:42

I’d consider half a tin plenty.
I used to make a tin last three meals when I was a student.
