Fine as a starter, not as a whole meal unless it’s young children.

VeganStar · 02/11/2022 18:07

A whole tin and three or four slices of dry bread.
i eat a lot.
my dd would have a whole tin but one slice of bread.

SC21 · 02/11/2022 18:08

This thread has shocked me 😂I'm an adult (currently pregnant) woman, and half a tin – with a few bits on the side – has always been ample. Couldn't imagine eating a whole tin in one go!

Xmasbaby11 · 02/11/2022 18:11

Definitely not, not if that's supposed to be a meal. Just about a portion for my 8yo, but not the 10yo or adults. With a sandwich. I wouldn't just have soup and bread unless it was a starter.

We mostly buy the fresh soup, if we buy it, and one tub does 2 portions. It's more substantial as well, more like a homemade soup.

gardenflowergirl · 02/11/2022 18:13

Depends if it's a starter or a main meal, child or adult.

pollymere · 02/11/2022 18:19

Officially on the tin, it's half the tin. My Dad used to add milk and make it stretch to feed us. I think it's a portion as a starter or a light meal but as a lunch or dinner I'd eat the whole tin with bread or ryvita. I would probably add milk and give a stretched half tin to kids though.

Bluekerfuffle · 02/11/2022 18:19

It generally says on the tin how many servings it is. A Heinz 400g tin of soup says it serves 2.

MrsRinaDecker · 02/11/2022 18:28

I always did half a tin as a serving. I think I also remember smaller cans that were meant to serve one..
I do remember the first time I read in a book where a character had soup and a sandwich for lunch.. it seemed awfully decadent to have both 😂 (I was a kid in the 80’s and portions were definitely smaller then!)

Incognitomum11 · 02/11/2022 18:28

Half a tin IS a serving yes, pretty sure it even says in the tin. Same with cereals, people always serve up way too much for themselves.

KatherineJaneway · 02/11/2022 18:30

No, it is not a 'serving' as I see it.

MajorCarolDanvers · 02/11/2022 18:47

teenage and above its a full tin for a meal. Half a tin is a snack

Otterock · 02/11/2022 18:49

I normally have half a tin but will have it with a toasted sandwich - usually loaded with cheese

timeonmyside · 02/11/2022 18:51

Maybe as a starter but not as a meal. Half a tin of Heinz Chicken Soup only has 106 calories.

User963 · 02/11/2022 18:51

We’ve been known to have one tin between two adults and one child! I’ve never had a whole tin. It would be lunch though and not dinner.

Blocked · 02/11/2022 18:53

Yes a tin is one portion. I laugh in the face of serving suggestions.

PinkSyCo · 02/11/2022 18:53

Half a tin of soup isn’t worth dirtying a bowl for. You are being very tight unreasonable.

BiscuitLover3678 · 02/11/2022 18:54

Half a tin is a very small amount

LoisLane66 · 02/11/2022 18:55

I have the whole 400g tin of Waitrose Essentials tomato soup (I also like Tesco's fresh leek and potato in the oval tubs) with toasted Black Sheep tiger bread and butter. 😋😋 That would do me all day. I'm not a big eater.

We have a winner. 😅

@User963
😳😲 You can't be serious.

TowerRaven7 · 02/11/2022 18:58

Super skimpy. I just had onion soup and I measured what I ate and it was roughly 500g. I had a medium/large savory muffin with it and this was for lunch.

wordler · 02/11/2022 19:01

When I read this yesterday I thought you meant that you were serving half of a 200g tin. But I think you are actually splitting half a 400g tin?

In which case, I'm with you. Half a 400g tin with bread is definitely a lunch portion - I might add a little milk to increase the portion slightly.

Especially if you have a full hot meal for dinner.

Spookysparkles · 02/11/2022 19:02

Half a tin of soup is enough for a child IMO

Yes. 200g of soup. Half a can.

Never seen a 200g tin of soup...??

Someone will be along in a minute to say they share a tin between four😂
