Depend what I’m having it with. I like my soup with my a cheese and ham toastie so half a tin. I usually buy fresh soup though in tubs so maybe a quarter of one of those with a toastie. I’d probably attempt the whole tub if I was having it on its own!

SeemingOKToday · 01/11/2022 19:07

I don't really care what the recommended portion size is...one tin of soup fills a bowl.

If I'm having soup, I'll have a full bowl thank you, not half a bowl. Can't believe there are so many who half half tbh.

GordonShakespearedoesChristmas · 01/11/2022 19:09

When I was younger it would have been half a tin each. Nowadays everyone eats a whole tin. Representative of how portion sizes have grown. It's why my Mum was slim all her life and I'm not!

5128gap · 01/11/2022 19:16

Can't people who want a whole tin have it, and people who only want half a tin save the other half fir tomorrow in a little tupperware bowl in the fridge?

Athenen0ctua · 01/11/2022 19:21

We used to have tomato soup with carrots and potatoes in, served with buttered bread as a child, was probably half a tin at the most.

Athenen0ctua · 01/11/2022 19:22

Carrots and potatoes added to bulk out the soup I mean

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 01/11/2022 19:24

You are correct that half a tin is a portion. However, I'd rather have a whole tin with one slice of bread than half a tin with two slices. Depends on the soup but generally a similar number of calories doing this....

Snugglemonkey · 01/11/2022 20:31

I don't eat tinned soup, but looking at the size of a tin I cannot see how half a tin would feed anyone adequately. I make my soup and like a decent sized bowlful. I am pretty sure I would want a whole tin. I do eat half a tin of beans, but soup feels v different.

This thread has reminded me that my mum always used to rinse out the Heinz tomato soup can with milk, to make it stretch further. I thought I'd been poisoned when I left home and had a can all to myself because I didn't know about the milk then.

Even better, rinse the tin with a slug of dry sherry, really improves tomato soup!

Jalepenojello · 01/11/2022 21:27

As a meal, absolutely not. No where
near enough calories either

True but my lunch only costs about £1.

Loads of other cheap options with more protein - sardines on toast, cheese sandwich, boiled eggs.

I used to like tinned soup tbf.

Annoyingly I think 3/4 a tin is the right portion size for my Heinz tomato soup loving kid. Half is definitely too little for a main meal.

Yes this. Especially annoying as there are 4 of us.

Why is that especially annoying? 3 tins divided by 4 is 3/4 each

Yeah and you just shove it all in one pan to heat it anyway

Don't know what MM did wrong but brocolli and stilton is one of my favourites, with a liberal helping of slivers of toasted almonds.

In fairness it might have been the cook rather than MM 😁

snakeitoff · 02/11/2022 17:48

Three quarters is ideal

MummyBee40 · 02/11/2022 17:51

Half a tin is enough for me but I always have either tomato soup or curried parsnip soup with a cheese toastie on the side for dunking.

Bekstar · 02/11/2022 17:54

It's fine for me because I don't eat a lot so I usually do me half a tin but hubby prefers a full tin and so does my 9 year old DS
