Surprising answers here. I’ve only ever eaten half a tin with 1 or 2 slices of toast as a light meal, i.e instead of sandwiches.

CarefreeMe · 02/11/2022 19:42

I eat soup everyday and always have a whole tin (or equivalent if I make my own as it’s cheaper because I eat it so often) but I only have that and no bread with it.

If I was only having half a tin then I would definitely have bread with it.

My soup and the ones I buy are max 300 kcals per tin and are packed with veggies, so I can’t see how having a whole tin is bad for you.

Elphame · 02/11/2022 19:46

Half a tin is fine for me for lunch. Might have a few crackers and cheese with it if I'm hungry.

00100001 · 02/11/2022 19:46

I am amazed that I have never ever had toast with my soup... I think I'm missing a trick!

Someone will be along in a minute to say they share a tin between four😂

To be fair, we've shared a tin between Mr, DH and DS when he was a wee lad.

However, that was once, and because we had to use it up. Must have added cheese or something to it or possibly had extra something to dip.

In anticipation of the way this thread will go

Half a time AND bread and butter - OMG if I ate that I would be full for a WEEK - that's too much food - I eat a tin of soup over 4 days and no bread - I'm 5ft 4" and a size 2 - teeny tiny me

In the real work - a tin is fine per person ffs - it's soup not melted lard

😁😁😁

As a very light snack or a meal? A third of a tin would only be a few spoonfuls of soup.

Sennelier1 · 02/11/2022 19:54

As a meal? 400 gr. please, and yes some bread&butter. Half a tin (or 200 gr,) would be fine as a snack like when you come in from the cold, or as a starter.

Lopoem · 02/11/2022 19:59

It depends when I'm eating it. For lunch instead of a sandwich, half a tin. As a main meal, the full time.

IDidntKnowItWasAParty · 02/11/2022 20:01

Half a tin of soup is minuscule! Unless it was with a full-on sandwich with hearty fillings.

catflycat · 02/11/2022 20:23

Have this debate often with OH, I find half a tin very filling, he can't contemplate sharing a tin. I normally eat very much of every food type, it's just soup I feel like this about. I would have at least two slices of bread and butter with it though so maybe more of a ratio thing and really it's the bread that's the best bit. Went to America once and they don't have bread with soup, just a packet of dry crackers. Now imagine that f*&king horror

Physics, innit.

Density = Mass/Volume 🤣
I'm with you op, half a tin with bread and butter is a normal portion for me.

ilovepixie · 02/11/2022 20:46

That's what's wrong with the world these days. Eating a whole tin of soup each! In my day a whole tin did a family of 4! No wonder we've gone to pot. And bread with it too! Next we will be hearing of people putting butter on their bread!!! Scandalous whatever next!

caringcarer · 02/11/2022 20:46

Half a tin of soup good for a hot drink after going out for a walk in cold or rain. Or for a starter. Whole tin as in 400ml if for lunch with a bread roll. Not enough for main meal.

Ifeelsuchafool · 02/11/2022 20:51

As a starter, half a tin with one bread roll is fine. As a complete meal for an adult a full tin is mandatory.

itsgettingweird · 02/11/2022 20:54

I make my own soup. It's much more filling than a tin and still have more than 200g I reckon but I don't have bread and butter.

If I ever have a tin (I keep Asda smart price ones for emergencies !) I have it with grated cheese in and 3 slices of bread and butter (GF bread so smaller slices).

Soup from a tin is an amazing comfort meal but it's not filling ime.

Yerroblemom1923 · 02/11/2022 21:07

This is mumsnet so, like the mothership chicken, a 400g tin of soup can be eked out to supply many, many meals throughout the week. Surely a whole tin will last days and you can probably freeze what's m left for later.

Pickingmyselfup · 02/11/2022 21:08

Normally I have half with a slice of bread because I tend to have big breakfasts and dinner plus I'm trying to shift some weight.

I can easily eat a whole tin and a sandwich though. Today I had a whole tin of Heinz tomato with a small sandwich packed with ham. Apart from an egg it's the only thing I've eaten all day because I'm not well. Normally I would be ravenous if that's all I had had all day.

It would have probably been for a lunch or something, I think we had it with party sausage rolls that were languishing in the freezer ha ha. Was just to use it up as we had 1 lonely tin instead of 2 we'd normally use (saving the ½ tin leftover for another day)

Don't worry, none of us got hungry or are anorexic or think that ½ a tin of soup is a massive meal or anything.

Just literally all we ever have done is have ½ tin of soup per person for ever. Except that one time when maybe DS had ¼ tin and DH and I shared the remaining ¾.

I'll bet all these posters have been HEATING it up too.... Scandalous indulgence.

We eat ours cold, from the tin, sipping it I'm turn. Saves on the washing up, saves money and the planet 😇

Mmmhmmm.

Damn this thread.

Tonight, I had a small bowl of homemade tomato soup.

Not a big bowl like a glutton, a small bowl. that was barely filled.

And I didn’t have any bread like some of the greedy guts on here.

No, no bread for me. Instead I just had an M&S melt in the middle cheese fondant.

Best combo ever.

Lilithslove · 01/11/2022 12:37

I'm just waiting for all the competitive under eaters to come on and talk about how they are stuffed after half a tin of soup and how we've lost sight of a normal portion size these days 😂

I always eat a whole tin of soup with one or two slices of bread.

There’s a few of you waiting, but as of the end of the first page literally everyone has said ‘full tin please’.

It’s like the teacher threads. More people complaining about what’s going to be said than those actually saying it.

(Off now to look for those competitive undereaters, damn you)

cowshindtail · 02/11/2022 22:44

I've always just had a half tin of soup as a helping and consider it to be just the right amount.

CourtneeLuv · 02/11/2022 22:46

nutbrownhare15 · 01/11/2022 14:10

Half a tin max here, with some toast. Have been known to share a can between our family of 4...(2 kids under 10)

What did you serve it in? Egg cups? That sort of portion wouldn't be worth dirtying the bowls for Confused

Wishiwasinmalta · 02/11/2022 23:16

Far too much salt in a whole can for my liking and I wouldn’t give it to my children. Half a can might be enough if inactive, a small child.. I would probably eg a can of chopped tomatoes to lower the salt, increase fibre.
