I prefer fresh soup - half a covent garden soup carton,
Just checked , they're 560 grams

I'm sure they used to be 600😮

Shrinkflation, innit

I’m not British and know there’s a big culture over there of tinned food, but I’m amazed that so many of you eat tinned soup.

Anyway, when I have soup I have a giant bowlful. Probably 500ml+, and often top it up for a second portion. Lots of fresh veg and herbs, so very satisfying and healthy. Usually have homemade focaccia with it.

why wouldn't we? It's cheap, good for you, keeps well in ambient temperatures, , cooks quickly, tastes nice etc.

what, something like...bread and butter??

No, not bread and butter, a filling would be included if I were having half a tin.

I don't understand homemade soup. Who looks into a bag of shopping and thinks 'What this needs is diluting and boiling until it's a watery mush'?

...no one... and if your home made soup is a watery mush, you're doing it wrong.

Half a tin of Heinz soup is often under 150 calories. Unless you're having something more substantial with it, like a sandwich or toastie, it seems like too little.

For some Heinz soups it would be more like 50 calories. 100 would be about the average.

Add in the bread and butter and you’re probably in the 250 - 350 range. Certainly a very light lunch.

Oblomov22 · 01/11/2022 17:59

No. Tin per person.

Crotonifolia · 01/11/2022 18:00

Lol, any usual sandwich filling. Cheese and pickle, chicken salad, cheese and ham toastie, whatever.

OldTinHat · 01/11/2022 18:00

One tin, no bread here. Just for me.

Drodeadledbedfedheadredsaid · 01/11/2022 18:03

Thought I'd pop along to say before someone else does (maybe they have already but I'm not reading whole thing) Obviously you shouldn't be eating tinned soup at all do you know cheap n easy it is to make your own lasts longer too so much added sugar salt e numbers added to tinned soup bla bla bla

XenoBitch · 01/11/2022 18:06

A tin per person. Half a tin is a tiny serving.

I often make soups from recipes I have found online, and they also produce a teeny serving. Says it "serves 8". More like 3.

Ok then…!

If you don’t have time or space to make a whole pot of soup then I hardly doubt the odd can or plastic tub of soup will kill you.

I do make chicken soup if having a roast or courgette and oregano and Philadelphia cheese soup or butternut squash soup but it does take time chopping veggies plus electricity to cook the soup is more expensive these days.

DonnaBanana · 01/11/2022 18:10

Portion sizes are commonly a joke. You buy a pie or something and it says serves 4 when in reality it barely serves 2!

I’ve got a courgette, oregano and Philadelphia cheese soup recipe that I might share… it certainly feeds more than 3 people and is quite filling!

... What an odd question.

Why would someone having half a tin of soup with bread and butter and what not be near anorexia?

@00100001 what an odd response, people with anorexia do eat. Some may have foods they avoid but plenty would eat soup, bread and butter.

The only time I’ve ever had half a tin as a portion was when I was severely anorexic, and even then I knew it was a tiny portion! Although I wouldn’t admit that to my dietician who was constantly trying to up me to a full tin as that was a standard adult portion size.

Fairislefandango · 01/11/2022 18:14

Some of those things, yes. It's debatable about it tasting nice - it's pretty rubbish compared with fresh soup in a carton or homemade. And processed longlife stuff high in salt isn't really that good for you tbh.

mondaytosunday · 01/11/2022 18:16

Not for anyone I know. I get fresh soup in 400gr size and split it with a friend and add half a sandwich, even then I'd classify that as a light lunch.

It's pretty fucking massive leap to go "hmm, someone is eating the portion stated on the front of the tin with an unknown amount of bread and butter, they might have anorexia...I'll ask them".

Jesus Christ.

Well the hundreds of posters just on this thread and the aisles FULL of tinned soup indicates that it's tasty enough.

Full tin (400g) but half of a fresh 600g tub.

One or two pieces of toast with either .

TheSausageKingofChicago · 01/11/2022 18:28

Half a tin is plenty…. if you’re a toddler

QueueEtwo · 01/11/2022 18:31

1/2 tin for lunch, full tin for dinner!

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 01/11/2022 18:34

My 9 year old likes half a tin with a cheese wrap

I don't want any filling with my bread! The soup is just there as a dip for the bread, don't fancy soggy cheese/ham sandwich personally

Junipercrumble · 01/11/2022 18:44

I was surprised when I began watching what I was eating more and discovered that half a tin of soup is classed as one portion. Surely that's wrong!
I figure that explains why I'm overweight 😂😂😂

One portion for what though?
A meal? A snack?

Something is amiss if your main meal of the day is half a tin of soup and a slice of bread.
