Yes. The tins are quite boring to manage a whole tin. Homemade, something like a cauliflower masala based soup, I can eat a large bowlful. Heinz tin of tomato soup, no, not even with lovely large portion of sour dough bread.

TheTurtle · 01/11/2022 16:45

I’m not British and know there’s a big culture over there of tinned food, but I’m amazed that so many of you eat tinned soup.

Anyway, when I have soup I have a giant bowlful. Probably 500ml+, and often top it up for a second portion. Lots of fresh veg and herbs, so very satisfying and healthy. Usually have homemade focaccia with it.

9thlife · 01/11/2022 16:47

Def a whole tin. Half a tin is not a meal

Focaccia with soup sounds a lovely idea.

Depends what meal this is for, is it lunch or dinner?
If I’m having soup for lunch then I use half a tin, if I’m having soup for dinner then I use a full tin.

ThinWomansBrain · 01/11/2022 16:55

I prefer fresh soup - half a covent garden soup carton,
Just checked , they're 560 grams

I'm sure they used to be 600😮

zukiecat · 01/11/2022 17:01

DD and me like different kinds of soup, so half a tin each wouldn't work for us, even if we wanted to!

So a tin each, two/three slices of bread (no butter) and that's us.

An Aberdeen Rowie is the best thing to dunk in your soup though Smile

We're actually having soup tonight, but homemade vegetable, so a large bowl each.

Kalasbyxor · 01/11/2022 17:01

Half a tin is fine, served with a slice of cheese on toast cut in triangles -the soup is more of a dip for the bread. We serve it in ramekins. Plenty of cheese, red onion and tomato on the toast though. Yum.

Sceptre86 · 01/11/2022 17:02

My son would eat half a tin with one piece of buttered bread aged 4. He is now 5 and would eat a full tin, still probably with only one slice of bread but then have some fruit. His 6 year old sister would eat the same but munch a load of veg sticks instead of the fruit. Is it enough for a teen or adult, no.

user29 · 01/11/2022 17:02

Hqalf a tin of heinz tomato is about 103 calories!! Other lerss sweet soups would be even less i imagine!

Dippydonky · 01/11/2022 17:03

Probably going against the trend here but half a tin is perfect for me (DP would moan about it though!)

BUT I’m a small person… not even 5ft so some older kids are taller than me! So maybe it’s proportionate!

I do think companies put unrealistic serving sizes sometimes to make the calorie count more appealing …. But souped is normally quite low calorie.

PenelopeTitsDrop3121 · 01/11/2022 17:04

Why dont they ever sell half tins then like they do with beans, sweetcorn or spaghetti?

mam0918 · 01/11/2022 17:08

Bobbins36 · 01/11/2022 13:57

@mam0918 never understood soup as a starter let alone a light one 😂 couldn’t eat anything else after a bowl of soup. And I have a greedy healthy appetite at the best of times!

either your having very big bowls of particulally lumpy thick soup or something hearty with it or your appitite is no where near as 'greedy' as you sugest.

Would you be full and unable to eat else after a pint of coke? thats litrally far more liquid than a starter bowl of soup.

Lol at "it's not designed to be served with a sandwich" !

It's not 1965 and preceded by a full cooked breakfast, then accompanied by a main course and dessert (for men) and the remaining third watered down with milk and a handful of amphetamines (for women, to 'help you have more energy with the children and get your pre baby figure back as a bit of a bonus') anymore, either.

Garlic cheese on toast (and a sprinkle of chilli flakes) is the way to go for a decent tomato soup meal.

Cinders88 · 01/11/2022 17:17

I’d give half a tin to DS, but I would certainly have a full tin myself. I’ve not seen any friends or family (adults) only eat half a tin 🤷‍♀️

If for lunch, I’d have bread and butter with it .. if for tea, I’d have a toasted cheese sandwich to dip into the soup 😋 yum!

urgh. Borderline anorexia, restrictive eating disorders , such an epidemic. WTAF. Would you have 200ml of tea, 200ml of coffee? Let’s binge on half a rich tea biscuit and a small cup of camomile.

errr.... big leap there...

Tin per person are you anorexic?

... What an odd question.

Why would someone having half a tin of soup with bread and butter and what not be near anorexia?

I would eat a full tin on my own with a slice of bread, but if I was cooking for say 4 people then I'd use 3 tins.

00100001 · 01/11/2022 15:28

... so what if you have ½ of your salt from one meal?
Surely it doesn't matter until you go over your daily intake? And even then occasionally going over wouldn't be an issue.

The first (and last) time I saw a Dietician, she quite seriously informed me that nobody should ever eat Marmite because there's loads of salt in 100g. When you eat less than 8g on two pieces of toast.

Mind you, she was also unaware of the recommendation for people diagnosed with POTS to have a higher salt intake. Or what POTS is in the first place.

5128gap · 01/11/2022 17:24

Tinned soup with bread would be a very light lunch, snack or supper, even if I had a full tin. Half a tin? Not worth getting my spoon wet for. And I'm not a big eater.

www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/258148741

They do sell them, but as you say, maybe not at your Tesco :)

Yes I can see they sell them in some stores, but they aren't listed in mine and as the next nearest store is 40 miles away its probably a bit far to travel on the off chance that they might have some different sized soup!

Caramelsmadfuzzytail · 01/11/2022 17:45

If it fits in one of my bowls, that's what I have, plus 2 slices of bread. If it's a cuppa soup, it goes in a cup, with a couple of slices of bread. On a side note, I have discovered that cuppa soups taste less salty than they did when I was younger, I'm assuming this is because people have discovered that too much salt is bad.

Crotonifolia · 01/11/2022 17:49

Half a tin of Heinz soup is often under 150 calories. Unless you're having something more substantial with it, like a sandwich or toastie, it seems like too little.

no market for it I guess. Clearly the majority of people have a whole 400g tin...

I put my unused half tine in the fridge for another day, it keeps a few days perfectly well!

But saying that, maybe I'll go mad and have the whole tin next time :D
