Do the Loose women really get paid this per episode

Whatisthisweirdfluthing · 31/10/2022 22:24

£5000…for an hour?!

I read it today in an online paper…imagine that, if you did only two shows per week (worked two hours per week) that’s 480 grand a year?!

OP posts:

Posted too soon!
Noone is making £480k just off of Loose Women. They have talked about the morning meetings before, where they discuss the topics beforehand and prep for guests then hair and makeup. Also they are considered self employed so only get paid when they make an appearance on the show. Many supplement with Instagram posts, being newsreaders, journalists (writing for papers and maagzines), agony aunts.

It sounds a dream but in reality you are being watched all the time. Everything you do from the way you sit to where you buy your milk is scrutinised. Then they pay a lot more tax as higher earners. So its not just 5k into their account. They will pay a lot of tax on their earnings plus agent fees which won't be cheap as they will need a good agent to get the publicity. Plus the cost of the upkeep to be a celeb. Let's be honest if they stopped looking 'nice' people will stop being interested and they lose their job!

Not really all its cracked up to be imo. I couldn't do it. Too much of an introvert, hate makeup and can't wake up that early!

psycho2 · 01/11/2022 09:27

The media rarely have a clue what celebs are worth or get paid so I'd take the figures with a large pinch of salt. I would say their salaries are much more likely to be individual based and that's based on their experience/popularity etc.

Also even if they were to get 5k each that's on paper, it be taxed in the higher tax bracket and then who knows what cut their agent gets? I recall Jim Carrey saying he got well paid but it irked him when the media said he'd get 20 million a film because after tax and agent fees etc it was more like 5-6 million he'd be taking home. He admitted it was good money but was annoyed such misleading figures for his earnings were published.

I can relate to this. Years ago I used to do supply teaching in London. I had people tell me I was overpaid as I was getting 200 a day, they got this figure from the media. I had to point out that whilst this is what the agency may have charged the school, it was before tax and their take.

In actual fact I was earning 430 pounds for a week and was getting no pension or holiday pay yet people would read figures published by the media and assume I was on 1k a week take home pay.

I also recall the papers printing the Xfactor salaries and Louis Walsh was laughing at them saying they were so inaccurate. Or there was a documentary I caught on tv in the Beckham household. They were asking Victoria was it true that she'd paid 5k for x, y and z things as reported by the media and she was laughing her head off saying that was a load of crap and how could she spend 7k on a kids pram and that she spent about 100 quid on it and it was just a normal pram.

depends on the celeb though, in loose women with the exception of Katie Price, Ruth Langsford and Christine Lampard I would say the rest look pretty much like regular everyday women who get make up done before they go on air by the studio but wouldn't be forking out much of their own money on their appearance or watching their figures.

psycho2 · 01/11/2022 10:01

This is like when people marvel at how much footballers or movie stars earn. They earn it because people they make much more money for the corporations for which they work, as people want to watch them. They generate huge amounts of revenue and they are rewarded for that, so that they will continue to do so. That’s literally all that there is to it

not always though. Some actors have a few hit movies and then make several flops but will still get a high salary nonetheless and the studios they work for make losses. Yes the actors career might go into the doldrums if they repeatedly make flops but they'll still have earned top dollar that will allow them to live in wealth for life.

Meg Ryan was earning 15 million dollars a film by the 2000s and yet by thenher films were all flopping and she stopped getting hired but she still got to hold on to her high salaries. Likewise Russell Crowe was getting 20 million dollars for a string of movies that bombed.

Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Hemsworth are others I can think of who failed to capitalise on their fame from popular franchises and had multiple flops although they earned huge salaries.
Just a few I can think of.

No idea but I just googled it and it says Stacey Solomon earns £3000 per episode and £12,000 for Instagram posts. Who on earth is paying her that much, and why? She's as thick as mince.

If she has got herself into the position of earning that much when she didn't have many of the privileges many other people on here have enjoyed then she is very much the opposite of ' thick as mince'

psycho2 · 01/11/2022 10:06

Some of them hardly prepare though. I read Linda Robson barely reads up on stuff, that's why she often looks bewildered

to be fair though it wouldn't take much prep, 90 percent of what they talk about is trivial stuff and even the news stories that they talk about are often stuff you could give general comments on, it's not a hardcore news/current affairs show.

megletthesecond · 01/11/2022 10:12

The ones who don't look like they've had any cosmetic work are possibly having far more expensive subtle tweaks done from good quality surgeons.

What is it about her that makes you believe she's 'as thick as mince'?

She did (very) well at school, for a long time juggled being a single mum with working (including multiple revenue streams) and is now a millionaire.

I can only assume it's snobbery that has made you assume she's 'as thick as mince'.

And FYI brands pay appropriately for engagement. If her posts didn't result in awareness and crucially clicks and sales, she wouldn't get paid much for them. Her agents will negotiate with brands using data from previous campaigns that shows results. If there wasn't a strong history of return on investment, her posts wouldn't have that price tag. But there is, so they do.

Keyansier · 01/11/2022 10:20

@monsteramunch It's not snobbery on my part as I don't know her apart from when she was on the X Factor and she came across a bit thick on there (but that might have been down to editing).

Well she’s doing something right isn’t she?!
I actually quite like Stacey. She’s worked hard and seems like a decent person. Good luck to her I say.

I don't think she's thick at all.

missushbbb · 01/11/2022 10:26

I haven't watched it in years, I did see a clip of nicola sturgeon on it which was very comical. Think they were talking about whether you should ever get back with an ex, and asked her opinion; it was quite comical, as it was obviously so different from her usual appearances in the telly!

Surely that is snobbery? All you know/knew about her was she had a working class accent, appeared in a singing completion and was a bit giggly, so you assumed she was thick. Would you have done the same to someone with a posh accent in, say, a rifle shooting contest with a big guffaw?

No sorry, I think that's disingenuous. She had a working class accent, was fun and smiley and wasn't taking herself seriously. If a woman with a 'posh' accent acted in the same way I don't believe you would have assumed she was 'as thick as mince'.

HaveYouSeenNancy · 01/11/2022 10:34

I used to watch LW about 20 years ago when I was on maternity leave. Kaye Adams was the lead (? not sure, she seemed to lead the conversation) and Coleen Nolan or Nadia Sawalha sat next to her, with a mix of Carol McGiffin, Fern Britton, Jane Moore, Lisa Maxwell... I can't think of any others from 20 years ago. Kaye Adams and a couple of others were journalists and it could be quite funny and covered current affairs. I watched it 2 weeks ago and couldn't believe how different it is now. I think they deserve every penny, I can't imagine having to present live TV.

That was 13 years ago. She's grown up a bit since then.

Ripping down a handful of rich celebs doesn't add much to the pot. If you don't want them to be rich then don't watch them. Also don't watch movies, Strictly or anything else with famous people in it.

I think the point is we’d watch if they were getting £50 an hour.
Lots of people get up early, work hard.
Theres no shortage of people that are “ good” on the telly. Thousands kids going drama school, normal people who can chat away or are personable.
Why does ITV pay them so much? Capitalism says replace them with someone that can do it cheaper surely? Or at least supply and demand. If loads of people are waiting to fill your shoes on Strictly why not keep Tess for less?

I disagree. I think the difference between the best presenters and OK presenters is huge and that's why they can command the money. Think of the quality of Bargain Hunt or Homes Under the Hammer presenters compared to Tess and Claudia or Ant and Dec. Obviously personalities and whether you like their style will come into it, but you can absolutely see they're better at what they do.

Lykia · 01/11/2022 11:11

SS is a shrewd business woman. Rule number 1 - know your audience. She knows her target audience want her to be a working class girl from Essex who cones across as being a a bit ditzy at times.

She's probably nothing like that in real life but acting a bit ditzy and playing to type brings in the bucks. Good on her I say.

Far from "thick as mince" if you ask me.

If the broadcasters paid peanuts, the high calibre talent would go elsewhere and their ratings would drop. And then they’d lose money.

ITV made nearly 2.3 billion pounds of revenue in 2021. Why are you more concerned with the perceived ‘unfairness’ of the people who make them that money receiving commensurate compensation than the existence of billion pound corporations?

It’s also interesting that this thread is focussing on a handful of relatively well paid women in entertainment, as opposed to the likes of Ant and Dec or, even better, multi-millionaire footballers. We’re apparently fine with men earning ridiculous amounts of money. 🤔

Oblomov22 · 01/11/2022 11:31

Blimey. I'd forgotten how much all these celebs earnt.

I disagree with you though.
Bargain Hunt and it’s ilk are what they are. They wouldn’t be amazing if Tess Daily started presenting them.
Some of the Place in the Sun presenters are great and could easily present prime time.
Ant and Dec have become their own show really just because they’ve been on I’m a Celebrity So Much. They could easily be paid less as I bet they’d be way less popular presenting something else and they know it.
James Corden is a great example of worth being utterly arbitrary.

*You think Penny Lancaster, Kelle Bryan and Frankie look like regular women? Who don’t fork out on their appearances or watching their figures?

What*

not seen it in ages so wouldn't know the panels these days but the ones I can remember like Coleen Nolan, Nadia Sawalha,Carol McGiffin, Fern Britton, Jane Moore, Lisa Maxwell, Linda Robson, Denise Welch, Janet Street-Porter and Gloria Hunniford never looked like women who spent vast amounts on their appearance by any means. They looked very much like normal women you'd see on the school run.
