Someone stole all the Halloween treats 😡

I went out around 4pm for 20 minutes to pick up the kids and we come back to discover everything gone... I put out a pumpkin on top of a plastic storage box (rain protection) with two bowls of miniature packets Cadbury chocolates and some selfish git has swiped the lot...

Why are some people so selfish?
AIBU to not bother next year? 😭

I put out a huge bowl of sweets a few years back. Someone took the lot even my bowl. So I’ve not bothered since.
Theres always some low lives that ruin things for genuine people..

Teeshirt · 02/11/2022 08:41

I’m completely baffled why anyone would leave bowls of sweets outside. I’ve honestly never heard or seen that, ever, not even in films. It just defeats the whole point, surely. You are meant to knock, wearing scary costume, householder opens door, shrieks, kids say trick or treat, householder offers them a treat from a bowl or bag (kept in the house). There’s no point doing it otherwise.

For me it's because I was in for part of the T&T time and then when I went out, young children were still out and I wanted to get rid of the sweets still be a part of Halloween, you know.

I imagine this is the case for most 'bowl leavers'. I don't think it's that baffling.

Mezmer · 02/11/2022 12:43

You have to put a bowl out if you have your house decorated and are not going to be in. Otherwise, if your house is decorated and you don’t open the door they supposedly tie a firework to your cats tail or egg your house or whatever, in revenge. So, if you want to pop out with your kid to knock on doors then you leave the bowl out to tide things over until you are back. However as it shows here despite leaving a sign to ‘take one’ some kids will just run off with the lot and then the next ones come along and there’s nothing for them so they smash up your stuff. You can’t win, so the only thing to do is stay in to open the door or just don’t bother celebrating. Thank goodness I don’t have to bother anymore after 18 years of it!!

Mumsy2022 · 02/11/2022 15:33

The OP obviously had trust in people. If we tarnish everyone with the same brush, the world would be an ugly place. Just so happens, there are ‘some’ mean, spiteful & greedy individuals amongst us, but not everyone is the same. Sadly, we have to live with the assholes in the world, but the OP probably wanted to do something nice for everyone but it just goes to show, there are one or two people who feel the need to be greedy & selfish. She probably didn’t expect them all
to get stolen. Others just prefer to ruin things for everyone else. Some of us live still hoping there is good in the world. Slim as it is, people like the OP and myself always try to believe there’s good ones out there they won’t take advantage.

Like I said up thread, some people (like me) are the only adult in their homes. Taking the kids out trick or treating means no one home to answer the door.

So our sweet bowl goes outside for the half hour or so that my DC are themselves trick or treating. It's not that hard to understand

It's evil and in keeping with the Halloween theme - those that did it will probably end up being Tories and talking about taking the opportunity when it is presented. 👹

Some people have to bring their stupid politics into everything.

HedgehogB · 03/11/2022 13:04

i think that’s awful, but I always have mine inside so people knock. Half the fun is seeing the costumes. Have we all forgotten that trick or treat is meant to be about knocking on the door and saying trick or treat? And showing a trick or getting a treat? These days it’s just about some version of supermarket sweep. If we returned to the original format this wouldn’t happen . I also saw a lady moaning at the supermarket till about the cost of food, she had bought nothing but cheap pies and pizzas. Meanwhile her badly behaved kids were getting a £15 hallowe’en outfit bought for each of them. Which will no doubt get binned this week. Make something with a bin liner !! Honestly the world has gone mad .

I'm sorry but kids love treats, how can we expect all kids to have self discipline? Don't leave something out of your control and not expect it all to be taken. Either open the door all the time to give a treat or don't bother at all. I think the whole part of trick or treating anyway is to knock on someone's door and trick or treat. Not just sweets left outside and not actually being seen by anyone. Kids get dressed up to knock on, you see them, they say trick or treat and you hand them a treat. Just saying.

I grew up in Canada and no one ever left the sweets outside, that’s just asking for trouble. You ring the doorbell and then get your sweet in a sensible supervised fashion. Kids don’t really have the best impulse control around delicious candy

Rosie22xx · 06/11/2022 11:54

I 100% agree, but I have seen way too many times kids having kids. These parents aren't mature or brainy enough to teach their kids common courtesy and decency. And unfortunately people like us have to put up with this crap and not be so nice unfortunately because they just take advantage of any situation.

Twentypast · 06/11/2022 12:10

I was out as my mum is in hospital and I was with her. Came home to my light grey front door spray painted florescent green. The cameras show 4 teenagers, all boys I think, in masks, shouting "trick or treat" and then spraying the door when there was no answer.

I can't get the paint out. It's faded but still very obvious. I'm so upset.

BlueWalnut · 06/11/2022 12:16

I live in a relatively nice area where Halloween is dying out. A minority of kids have behaved badly and it’s been too disheartening for neighbours, who just wanted to do something nice for children, to have their property vandalised.

BlueWalnut · 06/11/2022 12:17

Sorry @Twentypast - that’s criminal damage. I hope your Mum is doing ok.

Thanks. I did debate calling the police but it seems pointless. The boys are completely unidentifiable.

This

Some years ago my then 12 year old son and his mate emptied a whole bowl of sweets left out.
I was furious at them actually and, in the end, allowed them to keep some of them but to add the majority to our own Trick or Treat bowl.
Greedy little Gits.

gillybean2 · 06/11/2022 13:01

Amazed that 40-60 sweets is considered enough. I live in a very small place and have had 100+ trick or treaters on occasion over the course of the evening.

My sister lives in a much bigger town and on the main road and has well over 200 knocking.

If you’re popping out for 20 mins or don’t want to keep getting up to answer the door for whatever reason then put a few out and then check and put more out later.

We didn’t get as many this year due to the rain and I was the only one on our road doing it so many passed by and didn’t wander down until I put a sign at the top of the road. Still had 40 ish knock. The foodbank will benefit from the left over treats.

Wow, I can’t imagine 40 trick or treaters, never mind 100 or 200. The most we have ever had is about five.

I love in a village which is full of families and we got around 50 tops.

GeneralSirHarryFlashman · 21/11/2022 09:28

Dip cooked brussel sprouts in molten chocolate and leave to set. I suspect that will do the job. I have heard (anecdotally) that cat/dog biscuits in chocolate also does the job!
