I went out around 4pm for 20 minutes to pick up the kids and we come back to discover everything gone... I put out a pumpkin on top of a plastic storage box (rain protection) with two bowls of miniature packets Cadbury chocolates and some selfish git has swiped the lot...

Why are some people so selfish?
AIBU to not bother next year? 😭

I wouldn't have put anything out that early.
But to think kids are only going to take one sweet when faced with a whole bowl you are kidding yourself!
Could have been a older teen or even adult.

OnlyAlchemy · 31/10/2022 20:17

Brussels sprouts in Ferrero Rocher wrappers for next year?!

ScrambledOrPoached · 31/10/2022 20:17

Loads of teenagers out this year with massive full bags I’ve seen, not many children and barely any houses have done it this year which is unusual. Those with bowls outside were all empty.

Village Facebook group has reported thefts from multiple residents. One of them has Ring doorbell footage of a group of teenagers in balaclavas stealing a bowl of sweets.

They were also kicking on doors... hardly naughty young children!

I don't even take a big bowl when I answer the door. Just a few in a bowl.

Same has happened here tonight, a gang of older kids has gone through our estate and cleaned everyone out. Lots of people put bowls out because they don't want their door knocked for some reason or other and it's worked fine in previous years. Why do they have to spoil it for the little ones?

Agree!

I put them out for kids coming home from school.

Surely part of the fun is answering the door, pretending to be scared; admiring everyones' costumes and having a bit of banter with the Trick or Treaters ? If you can't answer the door, don't participate!

I’ve never heard of anyone leaving the treats outside. Why would you? The whole point is that the kids are meant to knock. And then they get a treat from the bowl you have inside.

Quite normal around here (and other places I have visited nearby). My son has SN and the door ringing gets him all hyped up and would prefer to avoid that!

It's evil and in keeping with the Halloween theme - those that did it will probably end up being Tories and talking about taking the opportunity when it is presented. 👹

Totally agree. Love pretending to be scared by the little ones and even love the teenagers who for one night feel like they can act like children again.

Teddybonkers123 · 31/10/2022 20:27

I've had this once before. Was heavily pregnant and couldn't be bothered getting up and down to answer the door. Two teenage boys took half the (very full) bowl and ran off laughing. Unfortunately for them they got greedy and came back half an hour later for the rest, at which point I collared them and made them put them all back. Think they were both rather embarrassed.... 😂

milkysmum · 31/10/2022 20:29

I can't believe that anyone is surprised that the bowl of sweets would get swiped if left out.
The small kids with parents will just take one or two, but lots of older kids will just empty it into their backpacks if they see a bowl left on a doorstop. Nice village or not😂

purser25 · 31/10/2022 20:30

Ran out so put a bowl of not very nice boiled sweets all that I had someone swiped the lot. Bet they don’t like them.

PolkaDotMankini · 31/10/2022 20:32

That's really annoying. I put the bowl out while we go TTing ourselves or when the DCs go off to bed. Sometimes there are sweets left but not always. One year some scrote kicked the kids' pumpkin to pieces one year and they were upset 😡

StubbleTurnips · 31/10/2022 20:32

We leave a note with our bowl to say ‘smile you’re on camera!’ Just in case, and we live somewhere that isn’t desirable not had them nicked (yet).

Similar to another poster though we have had pumpkins smashed up. Cretins.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 31/10/2022 20:33

Happened in our village. We know who did it and I was surprised really. Couple of lads not dressed up, on bikes zooming around and pouring bowls into their carriers bags. They were out before anyone else so cleaned up.

Hilarious 🙄

It's also not just older kids - someone I know posted ring doorbell footage on Facebook of someone nicking the sweets. Was definitely am adult. Some people just can't help ruining it for others

Ostryga · 31/10/2022 20:35

Aw that’s not fun. We leave a bowl out to take from and people put sweets on the doorstep for Dd. We’re inner city and not in the posh area, and not on first name terms with our neighbours! It’s a shame that happened op.

CoffeeWithMyOxygen · 31/10/2022 19:37

What a depressing attitude!

Quite!

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 31/10/2022 20:40

I've always left a bowl out for the kids!! Literally never had a problem with them being nicked so I am surprised how many people are scoffing at the OP and calling her stupid.

I have a bowl that I leave out when we're out with DS and spares inside for when we get back.
It's lush seeing all the kids out and about and they all share tips about good places to go. Never had an issue with things being pinched.

Emmelina · 31/10/2022 20:41

A neighbour put up a fuzzed out video from their ring doorbell last year of a couple of teenagers lifting their sweet bowl up and dumping the entire contents into a bag. We know people will take advantage if there’s no supervision but don’t take the mickey.

MayThe4th · 31/10/2022 20:42

If they’re old enough to be out trick or treating without an adult then they’re too old for trick or treating. Full stop.

Little children might not have impulse control but if it’s done properly they should have an adult with them who will make sure they behave.

Anyone else has 0 excuse.

surreygirl1987 · 31/10/2022 20:46

Same happened here while I took my own children out trick or treating, but I did expect this.

I completely disagree with your first statement.
I don't think there should be an age limit on it, but I think people should be able to refuse to give sweets to older kids if they want.
