I went out around 4pm for 20 minutes to pick up the kids and we come back to discover everything gone... I put out a pumpkin on top of a plastic storage box (rain protection) with two bowls of miniature packets Cadbury chocolates and some selfish git has swiped the lot...

Why are some people so selfish?
AIBU to not bother next year? 😭

Normally this happens to us. Whilst we’re out trick or treating I tend to leave a box of sweets out. Usually they’re all gone really quickly. This time we came back after a really long walk and there were quite a few left. I don’t think our decorations were that obvious this year!

We normally get lots of trick or treaters but had hardly any this year! We’ve left a bowl out before and not had problems, it’s quite common to do it this way as people head out with their kids so aren’t in!

Don't be so mean. Why should those who would struggle to open the door to a load of strangers miss out.

Miss out ?? Grin Grin
How do you work that out ? How can not getting up and down to answer the door all evening, and not giving kids you don't even know, be seen as missing out ? Grin

Because if they want to do it to feel included in their community I don't see why they shouldn't! Just because you aren't witnessing it doesn't mean you won't feel included.

Just to clarify to anyone who didn't see My post... I didn't say let's wallop them, Iam against hitting children. I think it was taken down because I alluded that badly raised children like them give people justification about corporal punishment. I don't think it was fairly taken down.
No idea whether or not this one will be.
I stand by my point they are badly raised, need active parents in their lives and both phones and sweets taken.

Village Facebook group has reported thefts from multiple residents. One of them has Ring doorbell footage of a group of teenagers in balaclavas stealing a bowl of sweets.

This comment is peak MN 🤣

I'm getting Hot Fuzz vibes from this thread.

Thefts?!
So they are now stealing things other than sweets.

Taking Halloween treats left out isn’t theft btw. Greedy yes, theft no!

myusernamewastakenbyme · 31/10/2022 22:26

I put 2 lit pumpkins out around 5pm..went out at 9pm to bring them in and they are gone...my son found bits of it up the road...I feel really pissed off about it.

I took DD for the first time and was pleasantly surprised by how nice the whole thing was. It all had a fun atmosphere. We only knocked on doors of near neighbours but had a walk further afield and DD did take a sweet from a couple of bowls that had been left out.

We went early, as soon as it was dark, so that we could go for our own wander and were back by 5:30 so that we could have the fun of opening the door to kids here.

Completely disagree with the comment re older kids without parents. All of the teenagers who knocked here were polite and were really sweet to DD who passed the sweets bowl to them. They said how great her costume was and were really sweet and admired DD's decorations she'd made.

Very positive first Halloween experience for us.

TheTeddyBears · 31/10/2022 22:29

I went to a door this year that had left out a table and a box with little bags and a poem basically saying take one bag, don't mean leave some for others. There were still about 5/6 bags in the box and this was about 6.30pm my girls took one each. I actually wondered about doing the same next year. But this is my worry!

You know what's worse than children taking all the sweets at trick or treat?

Me taking a bucket full of sweets to work today for staff, there must have been atleast 80 to 90 small sweets in there. 3 hours later I come to the staff room and there's nothing. Literally nothing. I ask my team if they had any and some of them said no.

Adults. Full grown up #ucking greedy adults, that had the cheek to grab all of it and keep them to themselves. Never received a thanks either. So never again.

Its shit but this doesn't surprise me one bit tbh but then I've had my front gate stolen a couple of years ago and a plant pot🙄I don't bother putting anything out now

Terrible state of affairs when you can't even leave your front gate outside anymore 😞

feeona123 · 31/10/2022 22:40

Happened to us a couple of years ago as well. Now I’ll only put a few out and then go back and refill.

Ihatemyroad · 31/10/2022 22:41

We went to a ‘small village’ this eve. Our group were all ages between 3 and 7. But I noticed a few groups of ‘older’ children, one group went passed us and made a point of shouting out ‘We’ve emptied all the sweets down there none left for you’ and laughed. And they had!! The next few houses we came to had left sweet bowls outside and they were all empty.

I think Trick or Treating really should be for primary age children.

Onceinnever · 31/10/2022 22:42

I left a bowl out.

They nicked THE BOWL

Jaxhog · 31/10/2022 22:47

All the kids in our road go out together and only knock at pre-arranged houses. Much safer than leaving a bowl out for randoms!

I'm in a rural town and had much worse experiences when I lived in a city. Kids in our area all go to the school in our area and most of us know each other.

Hmmm must just be anywhere then and I guess lucky it doesn’t happen. Poor kids 😔

OnTheBoardwalk · 31/10/2022 22:52

I’ve opened the door with a big bowl of decent goodies and said for them to take one

parents have stood there smirking whilst the young kids tried to grab handfuls and empty the bowl in one

i don’t bother anymore

It’s not theft if you’ve left them out to take

MayThe4th · 31/10/2022 20:42

If they’re old enough to be out trick or treating without an adult then they’re too old for trick or treating. Full stop.

Little children might not have impulse control but if it’s done properly they should have an adult with them who will make sure they behave.

Anyone else has 0 excuse.

I agree with you.

marblemad · 31/10/2022 23:37

You can't just leave them out that's what people will do, we had an awful family tonight turn up and 2 out of 4 of the kids shoved their fists in the bowl after my sister said' pick ONE and then walked back to the parents without even saying thankyou, I went ' yeah ok thankyou then maybe?' and the dad stuck his middle finger up at us! The kids weren't even very young I would say between 8-14! We live in a nice area and have a huge park/field separating us from the rough area and never usually get issues, people posted saying they had seen loads cutting through the park to get to our area and causing problems cutting infront of families and being rude to those that actually took part and decorated, we probably won't bother next year
