I went out around 4pm for 20 minutes to pick up the kids and we come back to discover everything gone... I put out a pumpkin on top of a plastic storage box (rain protection) with two bowls of miniature packets Cadbury chocolates and some selfish git has swiped the lot...

Why are some people so selfish?
AIBU to not bother next year? 😭

Happened this year too. Previous years people have been honest and taken 1. Lots of empty bowels very early in the evening.
There were lots of teenagers out this year too, bet they swiped them!
Usually if teens are out it would be from 7 but let's face it too old really anyway. But anyone who doesn't mind teens would keep decorations out past 7.
No idea why they suddenly thought it was appropriate to go out when the little ones do, and obviously take handfuls of sweets intended for the little ones to take 1 each of! Selfish and ruins the fun for everyone. Real shame the etiquette of waiting until 7pm+ went out thr window this year. Quite a few people whose doors we knocked on commented on this too. Wouldn't be surprised if less people partake next year because of this

Surely part of the fun is answering the door, pretending to be scared; admiring everyones' costumes and having a bit of banter with the Trick or Treaters ? If you can't answer the door, don't participate!

Yeah but my kids take forever to walk around Trick or Treating themselves, and it's just me so I can't leave anyone home to answer the door. It feels mean being prepared to take sweets if I don't also give some out but if I don't leave a bowl I won't be around for most of them.

SporkAndMonday · 31/10/2022 20:53

We had the same last year so this year I just chuck a handful of sweets in every so often. Slightly less door opening and I don't have to go oooh nice costume so much.

Don't be so mean. Why should those who would struggle to open the door to a load of strangers miss out.

Bournetilly · 31/10/2022 20:55

Same thing happened to us! Also live in a nice/ safe area.

We left the bowl out as we went trick or treating. Nipped home for something after 5 mins and the whole bowl was gone except 4 packs of sweets. There was about 75 sweets/ chocolates in there.

Was a bit gutted as my daughter wanted to answer the door to trick or treaters once we got home and we didn’t have anything else to give.

I won’t be leaving that many out at once next year.

Do it again next year but just with all the left over bounty's from Christmas

This is an amazing idea

SporkAndMonday · 31/10/2022 20:56

I might just fill the bowl with apples next year

bellsbuss · 31/10/2022 20:59

I have always told my children to only take one sweet each so that other children get to have some. We always leave a bowl out as most years we are out at a party.

I heard two parents do this tonight there may have been more but it almost made me want to open the door and give them ALL the sweets I had left. I can't stand the sound of the grabby children. It's why I never open the door to them now. It's all about how many they can get.

ladymalfoy45 · 31/10/2022 21:05

It's a Tic Tok thing. Heard some pupils talking about it today.
I mean I know there are really grabby kids ,but it seems to be more 'planned' this year.
I'm putting sugar free sweets out next year. ...

Pigriver · 31/10/2022 21:07

Lots of people leave bowls here and they were all empty at 6pm. Some older kids not in costume probably the culprits. Anyway the little ones had fun, got plenty of sweets and it was lovely for them to interact with the neighbors. They are made up with their haul and got loads even though we have a strict 'take one' rule.

@SporkAndMonday I don't follow your line of argument here.

jtaeapa · 31/10/2022 21:14

My friend’s child used to do this. Would have a haul of several kg, upending any bowl he saw. He wasn’t a bad or nasty kid, just completely lacking in impulse control.

Not everyone feels able to open the door to them so why can't they feel involved by leaving sweets out and not having them all pinched in one go?

I'm thinking disabled and can't keep getting up and opening the door. People with social anxiety. People with covid infections. People who are getting a baby to sleep. All these "hidden" People who just wanted to do something nice and leave some sweets out and feel part of their community.

But tick tock is for older kids surely? God how embarrassing for them.

blippi123 · 31/10/2022 21:17

Can't say I'm surprised

roarfeckingroarr · 31/10/2022 21:19

I took my 2 year old tonight, just around the concierges of the buildings in our development. It was pretty disappointing to see so many children behaving so rudely, pushing and shoving. Parents didn't seem to care.

Whaleandsnail6 · 31/10/2022 21:21

We've always just left our bowl out for kids to take one as we are out trick or treating ourselves. In 5 years, we've aways had sweets left at the end of the night so I presume people have just taken their fair share. It's a shame some people have to spoil it for others.

Polkadotpjs · 31/10/2022 21:21

Teeshirt · 31/10/2022 19:48

I’ve never heard of anyone leaving the treats outside. Why would you? The whole point is that the kids are meant to knock. And then they get a treat from the bowl you have inside.

My dog hates the doorbell that's why but I want to give stuff out. This year ours got swiped too. First year it's happened. One year we had loads left. This year gone in around 7 minutes. Approx 40 items
Several houses had pots/ bowls out with signs like mine saying they have fearful dogs but please take a treat. Why do you think it so odd?

EmmaDilemma5 · 31/10/2022 21:22

Same happened here and we have a camera so I can see who did it as the box was full, they came (3x 14 year olds at a guess) and then the box was empty.

Little shits. Serves me right though, I didn't want to leave the chocolates out but equally had bedtime and dinner to do so for ease I did.

Next year I'm handing them out, Halloween isn't the same just helping yourself, half the fun is actually interacting with people.

Ganymedemoon · 31/10/2022 21:23

We had the same a few years ago. I could see on my ring camber, literally just one groups of kids swiped the lot! Tonight we left a bowl of sweets with a sign asking them to take 1 and remember to leave some for others. Seemed to work as when we came back there were a few left.

Brussels sprouts in Ferrero Rocher wrappers for next year?!

Absolute genius. Mind you I hate Ferrero anyway!

That explains why there were so many older children out before 7 here.
How vile, they ought to be ashamed of themselves. Imagine to be so brazen about going out at their age, especially before 7pm and quite literally stealing the sweets intended for the primary and preschool children! Then posting it online for a laugh.
Let's hope their parents see it and take both phone and sweets!

Booklover3 · 31/10/2022 21:25

I think that’s very unfortunate. We went to several houses where they had left bowls of sweets out and the kids took one each with plenty left over. Im sorry someone swiped all of yours. Please don’t let that deter you

Madagascary · 31/10/2022 21:29

If you’re going out why do you bother leaving stuff
