I went out around 4pm for 20 minutes to pick up the kids and we come back to discover everything gone... I put out a pumpkin on top of a plastic storage box (rain protection) with two bowls of miniature packets Cadbury chocolates and some selfish git has swiped the lot...

Why are some people so selfish?
AIBU to not bother next year? 😭

More fool you for leaving them all out

YABU

What a depressing attitude!

orbitalcrisis · 31/10/2022 19:39

I had that once, I didn't care though, I'd put all the shit sweets out!

Blaming the person who was kind enough to leave sweets out for kids rather than the person who swiped the sweets? Nice. I hope you don't pass that attitude on to any of your kids.

OfMark87 · 31/10/2022 19:41

Yeah this happened to me tonight as well. Caught them on my ring door bell doing it little shits

TheHauntedPencilCase · 31/10/2022 19:42

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 31/10/2022 18:12

Yeah you can't just leave them they get nicked within minutes. Even handing them out we have some kids trying to take a handful instead of just one and they're the little bags of haribo not single sweets so it's pretty obvious it's one thing each.

Same here. I find that my kids tend to get given extras by people because it's a shock that they only take 1 and say thank you!

FlakeySalt · 31/10/2022 19:43

Usernamqwerty · 31/10/2022 18:22

I expected kids to take one small packet each. This is normally a safe area with good community relations (small village).

I love the inference that your village is no longer the safe place you previously thought because someone got a bit handsy with the Haribo.

ByGrabtharsHammarWhatASaving · 31/10/2022 19:43

Happened to us this year as well. We put a bowl out every year while we go around ourselves and have never had a problem before. This time because it was raining so hard we only went out for a short time so I was really suprised. Next year I'll keep some inside in reserve just in case.

girlmom21 · 31/10/2022 19:44

Do it again next year but just with all the left over bounty's from Christmas

MegaClutterSlut · 31/10/2022 19:45

Its shit but this doesn't surprise me one bit tbh but then I've had my front gate stolen a couple of years ago and a plant pot🙄I don't bother putting anything out now

SummerBummers · 31/10/2022 19:47

Loads of kids taking vast handfuls of packets of sweets. Parents aren’t anywhere near them. First year it’s been like this though.

BeanieTeen · 31/10/2022 19:47

I leave them out in the knowledge that may happen - although it hasn’t yet. But it’s not like I want to keep any, quite the opposite, I don’t want loads left over so I wouldn’t really care. I keep some in the house in a smaller bowl just incase for when we get back.

Teeshirt · 31/10/2022 19:48

I’ve never heard of anyone leaving the treats outside. Why would you? The whole point is that the kids are meant to knock. And then they get a treat from the bowl you have inside.

Swg · 31/10/2022 19:49

Yep I had a group of bigger kids empty mine five minutes after I put it out, while I was still fixing my kids costumes. I wouldn't mind but I'd put in a few things like bubbles and balloons for little kids who might not be able to have the sweets - what teen is going to even want the Bubbles?

NeedMoMoney · 31/10/2022 19:50

Not the same but I've just had some little shits just take our pumpkins off our drive and smash them in the road! Cought them on the ring so going to post it on our local village Facebook see if anyone can name and shame them!! Little fuckers!!!

I’d say the same if someone left their iPad on their front door step and it was stollen

People have personal responsibility to not be stupid

Lockheart · 31/10/2022 19:51

You've literally left them out for people to take. It's poor trick or treating etiquette but no-one is stealing or swiping.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 31/10/2022 19:52

You guys don’t know the old joke… you put an empty bowl out with a note to take one. All the kids will think someone else swiped the lot and you get to eat the candy.

Of course someone will empty the bowl. I mean they’re kids who aren’t known for impulse control.

If you won’t be there and your house is decorated put up a sign… back in 10 min or whatever and catch them later. Or don’t bother with the sign and just hand out candy when you get back.

Thank god for rings!! Little shits!! Makes you want to not even bother!

Creameggs223 · 31/10/2022 19:57

3 times tonight I've seen teenagers run up paths an empty the tubs one lot even took the bowl they had been left in.

Saucery · 31/10/2022 19:58

I always leave sweets outside. Bagged them up and left them in a metal tray with a note asking them not to knock. I cba to be up and down all evening and the dog barks when anyone knocks on the door. When they’re gone, they’re gone 🤷‍♀️. At least the tray was still there Grin. One year I put the sweets in a plastic bag and hung it from the knocker - someone wrenched the whole bag off the door, which was a bit annoying. If I wanted to monitor behaviour I’d hand them out at the door, but I don’t so I can’t get cross if people are selfish.

ParentallyUnprepared · 31/10/2022 19:58

It happened to me last year. I saw some older kids running off from the window and just knew.

Stupid twats ran the wrong way to a dead end so when they came back I made them give them back. A passing dad had a go at them for it, too.

mrsmarmalade12 · 31/10/2022 20:00

I was really surprised by how rude a lot of ours were. Probably just being so excited and hyped up on sugar.

Usernamqwerty · 31/10/2022 20:03

Village Facebook group has reported thefts from multiple residents. One of them has Ring doorbell footage of a group of teenagers in balaclavas stealing a bowl of sweets.

I've a sign on my door for when we went out and a tray of sweets, both with glow lights so easily seen, all good, loads left when i got back but now I'm home but left sign and sweets out as it takes hours to get my asd child to bed and my door is still being knocked anyway, don't want to miserable about it but it's driving me crazy.
