Help! Nowhere to park!

Guessie · 30/10/2022 21:29

I know someone will come along and tell me I need to move to a house with it's own parking space, but those are few and far between and way out of my budget where I live! I've lived in my house for 6 months and never had this happen. I can't park! I have a 4 year old asleep in the car and I can't find anywhere within my permit zone to park. I've never seen it so busy. I'm currently sat in my car on double yellows in the hope that someone will move but at this time of night it's unlikely. What do I do? Pay for overnight parking and get a taxi? Can't really afford that but might have to. I could cry right now. I'm so stressed out. Been driving round the permit zone intermittently in the hope that someone will move for the last 45 mins but no joy.

I would park on the double yellows (if not blocking anyone) and go and move the car in the morning

ItsNotReallyChaos · 30/10/2022 21:33

How far is it to the edge of your zone? Can you park at the nearest edge of another zone? Usually these aren't residents only over night?

Do you know any of your neighbours well enough to knock on their door and ask if you can park on their driveway if they have space?

Other than that I share your horror at not being able to get parked at all near your house. I know Sunday nights here are the worst time to try and park because everyone is at home.

Oysterbabe · 30/10/2022 21:35

I'd just park it the closest place you can safely park it, lines and permits be damned, and move it as early as possible.

I will definitely get a ticket. I live close to the city centre and ticket wardens are out every day. They were out past 11pm last month and my neighbour's mum managed to argue her way out of a ticket! Could hear the whole thing and remember thinking how late it was.

They're all terraced houses so none of my neighbours have driveways otherwise I'd knock, as I have some lovely neighbours. I'm just so scared of getting a ticket as I'm so skint.

Well what else do you think we can suggest other than the options you are already aware of? Park somewhere close and get a ticket or park somewhere far and get a taxi.

No idea sorry I'm just really stressed and upset as am stuck in my car, extremely skint and am having a moment. Like to think we've all been there.

Park elsewhere and walk home? Have you got a pushchair with you?

or quickly double park at your house and run in and get the pushchair and then walk back from wherever you parl.

RedHelenB · 30/10/2022 21:43

I'd risk parking as near as you can illegally and set an early alarm to go and move it.

mondaytosunday · 30/10/2022 21:44

Well no, I haven't. I'm in a permit zone in London and 19 out of 20 times can park within a four houses of my own, and usually right out front. But there are pay-for bays at the end of each block, so can park there if no space on my street, and would just need to move my car, or pay, by 8.30am.

JenniferBarkley · 30/10/2022 21:44

God that's so shit OP I'm so sorry. Completely hear you on having a moment, we have indeed all surely been there.

The suggestion of running in for a buggy isn't a bad one if it's possible.

I don't have a pushchair but I don't mind carrying him. Nearest place I can park is that's non residents is 2.1 miles away so going to park there now. The joys of city living. Thanks everyone. This is no fun at all!

Sounds like a nightmare. Is there a neighbour who could watch your daughter if you lift her into the house so you can go and park?

WonderingWanda · 30/10/2022 21:46

Sorry, have just seen you have a son not a daughter

It might have been moved for her by morning! As in towed away!

Runnerduck34 · 30/10/2022 21:49

Sounds very stressful! I hope you find a space soon. I'd also be tempted to park in nearby zone, on double yellows and move it asap.
Is anyone at home to help ?

Park further away and get an Uber back with sleeping child?

HomerDancing · 30/10/2022 21:56

@Guessie ignore the really unnecessary nasty comments. Mumsnet is becoming a more and more nasty place. I understand you're looking for support and somewhere to vent.

Hope you get sorted and get home asap. It sounds like a nightmare !

She's said repeatedly she can't afford that.

Clearly, she expects MN to magic up a legal space.

Or, perhaps she's just wanting to vent and having a wee freak and needs to talk it through.

Sparklfairy · 30/10/2022 21:58

2.1 miles is a long walk carrying a child Sad

I'm in a city centre too with parking issues. I'm in the most expensive, most central zone and have been known to park in a nearby cheaper zone with my permit. Got a ticket twice and pleaded ignorance, "oh sorry got mixed up with which streets were which zone" and they waived it both times. Depends on where you live in relation to other zones but might be worth trying if it happens again.

The closest you can park to your house is over TWO miles? Confused WTAF?

PurpleButterflyWings · 30/10/2022 22:00

*Two miles away
