Help! Nowhere to park!

Guessie · 30/10/2022 21:29

I know someone will come along and tell me I need to move to a house with it's own parking space, but those are few and far between and way out of my budget where I live! I've lived in my house for 6 months and never had this happen. I can't park! I have a 4 year old asleep in the car and I can't find anywhere within my permit zone to park. I've never seen it so busy. I'm currently sat in my car on double yellows in the hope that someone will move but at this time of night it's unlikely. What do I do? Pay for overnight parking and get a taxi? Can't really afford that but might have to. I could cry right now. I'm so stressed out. Been driving round the permit zone intermittently in the hope that someone will move for the last 45 mins but no joy.

Oops started typing and then accidentally posted.
Was saying it's completely plausible not to be able to find parking in some towns. Definitely can be a challenge where I live when events are on nearby.
Op - was there anything happening nearby that made it crowded?
I live near a rugby stadium and best to keep an eye on match times to avoid parking issues.

MN used to be a friendly forum where people would post comments, moans, funny anecdotes etc. Now apparently if you do this, some twat will scathingly kick you with 'what do you want us to do about it' Hmm

WiddlinDiddlin · 31/10/2022 03:53

Again, I am utterly baffled at the narrow minded rudeness and lack of life experience of some very vocal MNers.

I can think of at least two friends who live in an area with very limited parking, permit parking only, and road layouts where you can circle a two mile area and easily not find parking for over half an hour or more.

Simply build a city or city surburb with narrow, windy roads on steep hills, lots of junctions and roads with parking on both sides (Sheffield, Huddersfield both spring to mind) where unless it is a legit parking spot you really can't park or you'll be blocking the road, or a junction.

The fact the OP found parking eventually (not particularly near her home) doesn't mean she didn't have a panicky moment whilst lurking on double yellows hoping someone would leave - unless she's some sort of all seeing eye in the sky how the hell is she to know if a parking space one road over has opened up? Nor does it mean it isn't believable.

Don't be so flipping nasty. Someone alone under extreme stress is reaching out for support.

Blondeshavemorefun · 31/10/2022 04:52

Glad you found a space. Obv someone moved

i would think About a cheap buggy to lewv in boot

also check out drives near you that you can rent

maybe message them to say sometimes if you can’t park in evening you need it 9/7 and what would they charge if you did park there ocassionly

this will prob happen again

Intru · 30/10/2022 22:44

Oh come on, it was a ludicrous post. There is literally zero probability that there would not be a meter, single-yellow line or another sort of bay that was available at that time on a Sunday evening. It was utterly implausible from the start, as your obvious solution showed.

Nice.

garlictwist · 31/10/2022 05:20

Some of the replies on this thread are just awful and mean. Why? Come on people.

ivykaty44 · 31/10/2022 05:37

Sadly until people demand smaller vehicles or better alternatives this will continue to be an issue

I don't normally do this but after catching up here I found this on the aristocracy thread 🙄

Intru

We’re not aristocracy, but both have good jobs, and we have;

Housekeeper
Nanny
Cleaners
Gardener
Handyman

Who work for us every week.

Thought that might be the case when the poster said they have a London house rather than saying they live in London.

what a shame money doesn’t buy class

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 31/10/2022 05:53

Oh OP I totally get this! I don’t live in the U.K. but parking here is horrific. Over an hour of searching for anywhere in walking distance last week, we ended up driving to the nearest no residents zone and getting the metro 3 stops back.

Thise who don’t believe you clearly don’t appreciate the luxury of easy parking!

SavoirFlair · 31/10/2022 05:58

NippyWoowoo · 31/10/2022 00:16

it never ceases to amaze me what issues Mumsnetters with trot out ‘lived experience’ for. A bloody parking space?

Yes. I used the term “lived experience” for a parking space - because Intru was claiming their experience is the world view on parking, and I begged to differ having lived another experience.

you do know @NippyWoowoo that “ lived experience” isn’t a term only reserved for feminist board, surviving abuse etc?

poor attempt to have a dig, 2/10

I suspect that’s all fantasy…

Lalliella · 31/10/2022 06:11

@Intru does it make you feel good to be unnecessarily nasty to someone? Superior maybe to someone who is struggling? Please tell us, I’d love to know.

MarigoldMoonStone · 31/10/2022 06:12

Aww this used to drive me insane at the end of a long day, and that was without a child with me and such a distance to have to get back too!
I’d be stressing too OP, sending sympathy!!

Lulu1919 · 31/10/2022 06:18

That sounds really stressful
I can't imagine living somewhere without a driveway or at least a designated space.
I won't even book a self catering let for a holiday unless it has parking
I hope you got sorted

Teeshirt · 31/10/2022 06:19

This could easily happen where I live. All housing is terraced, so no one has a drive. Many houses are converted into flats, so two, three cars per house. All parking is residents only. My area is only five streets where you can park. Best you could do is find a meter parking bay and pay - very expensive - and then keep going out to check if a car has moved.

This explains everything! Either a load of rubbish and they're living a fantasy on the Internet, or they're just a bit of a privileged c*

They might just be someone who isn't smart enough to realise it gets busy on the last weekend of the school holidays and before Halloween.

ahunf · 31/10/2022 06:42

@Shunter350 That's bad advice. The OP has already said the wardens have been on her road at 11pm.

ihatewinter2 · 31/10/2022 06:43

@Intru are you ok hun? Or do you thrive off been cruel to others?

ahunf · 31/10/2022 06:45

@Guessie I'd hide the thread and not come back. Some people on here have no idea what the real world is like.

Housekeeper

Cleaners
Gardener
Handyman

i feel so sorry for them!
