To think that something has to be done about the immigration crisis?

But I don't know what? More than 900 people landed in Dover today, as I discovered when reading about the terrible petrol bomb attack on a detention centre. Detention centres overcrowded, more than 7 million pounds a day being spent on hotel rooms for illegal immigrants, horrendously slow processing of applications...people drowning in the channel and local people feeling angry and frustrated because of the strain on services. Not to mention the mental health toll on people living their lives in limbo! So what is the answer? Because I just don't know anymore but it feels like the system has completely broken down.

Illegal immigrants are not in hotels since they are here illegally and don’t want to be detected. Ffs learn the difference before spewing bigotry.

Yes, this.

Well put

Because of course we have so many houses for them all to live in.

Who is 'we' ?

I've reported this thread.

It is fascist, racist and designed to engender hatred to people of other races .

Mumsnet where is your 'prevent' strategy?
This thread fosters hatred towards others and whoever started it needs to be stopped. It's appalling.

You are bonkers. Go and have a cup of tea and chill out. You can’t censor what others discuss because you don’t like it.

motherofthelittlescreamingone · 30/10/2022 21:54

We probably need to close the route to Albanian young men. Albania is a safe country - it isn't Afghanistan. Unfortunately, it is very easy to make an asylum claim and claim that you are a modern slavery victim, work in the black economy and then go home, having been housed at massive expense and paid state monies. Germany and France think we are mad because they just ship Albanian men back and basically do not let them claim asylum, which is why they now try to do so here. They do this legally - no one is taking them to the ECHR - so we need to close the routes here too.

Then we need to issue ID cards. To limit the size of the black economy. It is ridiculous that these were opposed due to privacy concerns in the noughties and dropped now that everyone basically gives masses of data away online without a second thought.

Finally, we need to have a proper debate about immigration, integration and make provision sensibly for asylum seekers. Making life hard for asylum seekers when they come here in the hope that they will stop coming is not good policy.

dawngreen · 30/10/2022 21:55

Drug gangs come from there.

Doubtmyself · 30/10/2022 21:55

MongoOnlyPawnInGameOfLife · 30/10/2022 21:31

Well seeing as multiple people have said that the reason all these people come here is because they get so badly treated in France and other countries, it sounds like we are the only ones playing (and being played) by the rules anyway, so yes, fuck international law.

Most people heading to the UK.... want to be in the UK because that's their destination, for family, for work, for contacts, not because they don't like France for fucks sake. France has more asylum seekers than the UK for fucks sake.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-53699511

Hasn't the Truss expirement taught you anything? Just because we live on an island, we are actually part of an international financial system.

That system will fuck us sideways if we rip up international law. So if you want to destroy the country of 67 million because 30,000 or whatever migrants turn up a year, half of them granted asylum because they're from genuine war torn countries like Syria, go ahead.

ToGanymedeAndTitan · 30/10/2022 21:55

@PerditaNitt IMHO, a real reason for much of the backlash is that many people photographed on boats are men in their 20s and 30s, making the public question how vulnerable these people are. A legal route focusing on the most vulnerable, particularly Women and Children, would be more easily welcomed and accepted
You hear this "argument" a lot but I think it makes sense that the men go first to find somewhere to settle before uprooting their families.
I mean, I know what it's like to have small babies and toddlers - I can't even begin to imagine leaving my home to go on hundred/possibly thousand mile walk with a baby and a toddler and then packed into a boat with others for a dangerous sea crossing ( it was bad enough getting out of the house to go on a bus to the next town some days!)

Phantomb · 30/10/2022 21:55

I work in an area dealing with unaccompanied asylum seeking so called ‘children’. We rarely dealt with them until the massive influx since May/June this year, over spill from Kent. Most have date of births of 01/01/2005 or 01/01/2006. Many are age assessed as being over 18 within a few months or disappear from their foster placements.

They have to be booked in for comprehensive medical assessments with a consultant paediatrician and the added costs of interpreters within 4 weeks of arrival. Jumping the queue that other children are on for years. Referred for TB screening etc. They refuse to attend or disappear shortly before due to fear of age being figured out and the appointment is wasted.

The vast majority are Albanian and they all have the same ‘reason’ for seeking asylum. It is laughable and I actually hate my job now. Absolutely soul destroying. My disabled DS had to wait 2 years to be seen by the same team.

Whst should happen is that we have patrols picking up these boats (they can’t avoid radar!) before they set ashore and towing them back to France. They are France’s problem as they entered France. We have never been a Schengen country and have a hard border.

Until we have a government that will stand up to the French and play hardball we will remain the laughing stock of the world.

WhosafraidofVirginiaWoolf · 30/10/2022 21:56

@rockingbird Completely agree with you and it's not just Kent either.

We are a small market town in the NW which is now housing two hotels full of mainly Eastern European men.

ToGanymedeAndTitan · 30/10/2022 21:57

Also forgot to add, but surely if you speak a bit of a language like a lot of people do with English, you'd probably want to head towards a country that predominately spoke it?

woodhill · 30/10/2022 21:57

Totally agree

Awful when they are out before your own disabled dc

most on here have outed themselves as absolute idiots

Nothing like telling everyone disagreeing with you that they are idiots to make a situation better or for winning people round to your point of view.

nonono1 · 30/10/2022 21:58

It needs to be stopped - not because I’m anti immigration, but because people smugglers are making thousands of pounds by sending vulnerable people across the Channel in inflatable dinghies and putting their lives at risk in the process. They couldn’t give a damn if these people live or die as they’ve already pocketed the money. It’s a horrendous trade that needs to be cracked down upon. Surely no one came disagree with that?

woodhill · 30/10/2022 21:58

Put before

ProFannyTea · 30/10/2022 21:58

We also need to accept that the 'people smuggling' bullshit we are routinely being fed by the government and the media is not true. People smugglers don't exist
in the context we are being led to believe. People smugglers are not storming beaches in France loading thousands of young men into inflatables every week. These men already have access to the financial means to buy the boats themselves, and are doing so. This is not the same trafficking as the Vietnamese nationals being found suffocated in the back of lorries. In most cases the men we are seeing landing on Kent beaches by the thousands every week were not trafficked. They were either already in Europe or stowed away and hiked off their own steam to reach France. People smugglers are not operating in the English Channel in the way the government would have us believe. It's a smokescreen.

We can't have a proper debate because its hijacked by far right maniacs and on the other side far left who will also rise up when far right scumbags open their mouths. A propert debate is impossible. In the middle you have people thick as pigshit wading in and 'experts' ignored.

Look at the state of this thread.

HeddaGarbled · 30/10/2022 21:58

I don't understand why the UK is so much better than France, and other continental European countries, that people want to risk their lives taking small boats across the channel. Can anyone explain why? Is it because the benefits here are so much better

No.

Language, family & a thriving black economy.

You know the reason that they disappear is due to fear of age being found out how exactly if they've disappeared?! 😕

HelloMrBond · 30/10/2022 19:38

I’m 99% sure the op refers to illegal immigrants. The legal asylum seekers come here through legal methods. Arriving on dinghys supplied by criminal gangs is not legal.

Crossing the channel to claim asylum is not illegal. There is no safe way for asylum seekers to claim despite the French offering to let us open a processing centre on their soil. If we did that then we could process them and keep out the undeserving. We could shut down the people smugglers overnight and we’d keep our reputation as a fair and equitable country.

Leaky Sue can only make it illegal to cross the channel by leaving the EHCR and breaking the UNHCR convention for refugees. This puts in the illustrious company of the Russia and Belarus.

Just to put your fears into perspective, last year 75 million people claimed asylum and just 0.026 of them did it in the U.K.

Can you post links to actual evidence for this assertion, please? Because everything I’ve ever read suggests these people are vulnerable individuals who have been sucked into paying thousands of pounds to people smugglers who then “help” them across the Channel in overcrowded dinghies.

Autumnisclose · 30/10/2022 22:02

We need ID cards and an economy that doesn't rely on cheap labour paid in cash.

The great replacement or new world order or Covid was made in the lab, or whatever bollocks is trending on twitter?

So not all of them are idiots, just most of them (as you said). Just for having a different opinion to you. Not sure that makes it a lot better. Do you caling people that achieves anything other than causing more division, more entrenched beliefs and more fuel on the fire? Has it ever made anything better because, despite being an idiot, I'm fairly sure it never has.
