To think that something has to be done about the immigration crisis?

But I don't know what? More than 900 people landed in Dover today, as I discovered when reading about the terrible petrol bomb attack on a detention centre. Detention centres overcrowded, more than 7 million pounds a day being spent on hotel rooms for illegal immigrants, horrendously slow processing of applications...people drowning in the channel and local people feeling angry and frustrated because of the strain on services. Not to mention the mental health toll on people living their lives in limbo! So what is the answer? Because I just don't know anymore but it feels like the system has completely broken down.

@ProFannyTea Is this the free accommodation we should begrudge?

And all those people so keen to jump on the Liberal bandwagon with the 'they just be desperate '. Come and spend a week on one of the Kent towns these men land in and then have a say.

woodhill · 30/10/2022 21:43

@ProFannyTea

Yes I think this will impact on us negatively as you suggest

ClemmyTine · 30/10/2022 21:43

Every time anyone says the world's population should be reduced, I think to myself, why don't you do something about it then and throw yourself off a cliff.

Weird. I work with asylum seekers and spend a lot of time in the company of groups of young men. I’ve been having my say quite a lot on this thread. 😁

dawngreen · 30/10/2022 21:44

I don't know why race got brought into this post. And my family are not entitled to those health benefits. I just think any one who enters our country should have to fill the vacant jobs. Or do volunteering of some sort. Just kick out any criminals entering the uk.

CaronPoivre · 30/10/2022 21:44

What is really sad is that the likes of Farage and the Tory government have persuaded many that their lives are disadvantaged by immigration, that it's the immigration on public services that are resulting in poor access to services and that immigration is responsible for people having shit lives. It's a clever tactic fed by a right wing press. The problem is a philosophical and political strategy of each for themselves/ every man in his castle. The destruction of public services and profiteering from essential services is the cause of our nation's fall down the economic pile and for polarisation wealth.

Immigration benefits us hugely. Our crops have been rotting in fields. There is a shortage of delivery drivers, of care workers, of people in hospitality. Yet people seeking asylum cannot work. Syrian and Afghani professionals with good spoken English are holed up in immigration centres whilst people queue in emergency departments.

If you opened a legal route can you give an idea of numbers arriving?

There seems to be a lot of anger on this thread but surely if you are envisaging a new system you have an idea of the capacity you’d need to accommodate

Don't you get it.

Currently YOU MUST BE IN THE UK TO CLAIM ASYLUM, so you can't get on a plane because you need a Visa to get on the plane, many of the boat people are from Afghanistan , Iran and Syria so they wont be given one. Their choice is risk a boat if they want to claim asylum.

By having a legal route and processing in France , you'd cut the boat traffic overnight to economic migrants from places like Albania.

About half the people coming on boats are granted asylum anyway.

So to answer your question, half the people coming on boats now at least would use it. It wouldn't be easier to get to the UK as those getting processed arriving now have either a genuine claim or not.

Obviously we need to speed up the processing of genuine asylum seekers and allow them to contribute productively to society. We need to work with other countries to share intelligence to root out illegal migrants who have no genuine reason to be in the UK. We also need to step up surveillance and share information on groups and individuals who pose a threat to the safety of people seeking refuge in the UK.
We need to scrap the abhorrent Rwanda project and get the money already paid to them back to help resolve immediate issues in this country.

This sounds reasonable. Add to that we need to stop the daily Mail whipping up “illegal immigrant” hysteria daily while they avert their eyes from all the billions of ponds the government wastes on their cronies. Btw, I know we can’t really stop the Mail as it’s a free press 😂

Yup

They’re also never the ones who chose not to have kids either

Capri3 · 30/10/2022 21:46

BelleMarionette · 30/10/2022 21:27

I don't understand why the UK is so much better than France, and other continental European countries, that people want to risk their lives taking small boats across the channel. Can anyone explain why? Is it because the benefits here are so much better?

Also, to those saying we need workers, do we have statistics on employment for those who arrive by small boats? And how many earn enough to be net contributors? I understand they cannot legally work for a long time, and then after that many may choose not to work. Certainly, if they don't speak English, then their opportunities for employment will be limited.

They risk their lives in small boats because the traffickers tell a bunch of lies about how the migrants will get asylum within 3 weeks, be earning £60,000 per year, and be living a luxurious lifestyle when here. They’re obviously not truthful about how long the crossing is either. The economic migrants aren’t crossing because they think they’ll get a hotel room and a few pounds per day.

oakleaffy · 30/10/2022 21:46

Brexit sold and then was 'Won' on the false promise of ''Taking control of borders''.

No ''Control'' has happened, and the illegal immigration crisis is worse than ever, much to the delight of the people smugglers.

You know full well those places only account for a limited amount of asylum claimants. Conveniently however, you neglect to mention all the five star hotels being requisitioned every month by the home office purely for housing asylum seekers.

slowquickstep · 30/10/2022 21:47

sst1234 · 30/10/2022 19:54

Why do we keep insisting on this myth that the majority of the crossings are by asylum seekers? The asylum seekers are all stuck in the camps in Lebanon, Turkey and Pakistan. The crossings are mostly by economic migrants. Until we accept this, no serious solution can be found.

How angry and rude are you? Weird. Why are you so raging it’s not normal.

Again. If you make it easier by offering legal routes do you think dropping the barrier of treacherous water crossing would impact numbers wanting to come here?

It’s a pretty big barrier isn’t it, having to risk life. So give an idea of how many people you’d need to accommodate if a safe and legal route was established.

Per day is fine.

Nice. And you're probably thinking to yourself that you're the one holding the moral high ground in this debate and those disagreeing with you are the nasty ones.

I literally prefaced my (very short) comment with "Never mind immigrants". I thought people would be able to put two and two together and know I was talking about the population as a whole, immigration/immigrants aside, but apparently not.

It still just strikes me as a very odd thing to say. If it were a thread about global warming, sure, would have made more sense in that context.

I mean I could have come in and said ‘never mind immigrants, we need to plant more trees’ but that wouldn’t have made any sense would it? So I struggle to see how you’re comment was remotely relevant which is why it has been taken out of context when discussing the movement of large groups of people.

And I consider it an extremely flippant comment under any circumstances btw.

Too right something needs to be done about it - I think we should be providing them with legal routes in so that they can come and help us with the terrible staff shortages we’re experiencing. We’re paying the price of Brexit and able bodied people want to come and work here? Yes please and thank you!

Well put

dawngreen · 30/10/2022 21:53

Some of us actually decided not to have children. Lots of children need adoption any way. Some times you think what if but other times you see and hear the screaming toddler pulling a strop , and go off glad its not you lol.

Autumnisclose · 30/10/2022 21:53

@BewareTheLibrarians so by your own admission, not the economic migrants that the majority of people on those boats will be. Mostly from Albania at the moment , that well known war zone.
