To think not everything is ‘misogyny’

Cuppasoupmonster · 29/10/2022 16:11

… and that the word is massively overused on here?

I’m getting quite tired of it if I’m honest, it feels like every other conversation the ‘misogyny’ card is whipped out and anyone who disagrees has ‘internalised misogyny’ (um no I just have a different opinion).

It’s becoming the ‘BeKind’ of feminism. Overused to the point it’s getting meaningless and irritating, and just used to ‘win’ any kind of nuanced topic without any proper discussion.

AIBU? 🤷🏼‍♀️

Do I believe that in the real world a raped woman should be denied an abortion? The honest answer is that I haven't come to a settled view on that one.

This is honestly chilling.

You haven't come to a settled view as to whether a woman should be forced to continue a pregnancy and give birth.

niceduvet · 03/11/2022 11:11

... so the honest answer re: rape is that I'm undecided. And it's ok to be undecided.

Cuppasoupmonster · 03/11/2022 11:11

lifeturnsonadime · 03/11/2022 11:05

Well they are different circumstances aren’t they? Did I suggest we should do anything to limit the choices of women like me who were sloppy with contraceptives? Or merely noting that’s probably how a lot of them happen?

Why discuss the difference if you are not judging? You are making no sense. Do you think it's OK to sneer at women but not actually to ban abortion. So you can just judge?

You keep telling us you had an abortion, that is completely irrelevant to your ability to hold misogynistic views against women.

I’m commenting/judging or whatever you want to call it. Pretty objectively as I’m including myself in that. I’m not sneering, but you seem to think that anything other than ABORTIONS ARE GREAT AND WOMEN ARE ALWAYS 100% CORRECT is ‘misogyny’. And browbeating other women into repeating it like a mantra. It’s bizarre, like you think women are toddlers incapable of right or wrong and should be treated with kiddie gloves at all times.

If you are able to read the person I quoted, you would see that they said it is misogyny to "blame women for getting pregnant" and that's what my reply was about.

HTH

But what is your point?

Eindaira · 03/11/2022 11:13

So if you're having a casual fling... The consequences for me not using contraception are pregnancy and the till on the body, complications, dying in labour, multiples, having to go through an abortion, adoption, having to raise a child for 18 years. Those are some massive consequences to my life.

A man, what consequences does he have from me getting pregnant? Pay me some maintenance... Doesn't even have to see his child if he doesn't want to.

It's easy to see why men would care less about contraception

lifeturnsonadime · 03/11/2022 11:14

I’m not sneering, but you seem to think that anything other than ABORTIONS ARE GREAT AND WOMEN ARE ALWAYS 100% CORRECT is ‘misogyny

Yes I do because anything other is restricting a woman's choices and is treating her as less valuable than a fetus.

The woman is ALWAYS 100% correct.

Comparing empowering women to have total bodily autonomy to treater her like a toddler is frankly bizarre.

You are entitled to your opinion. I am entitled to believe it is misogynistic. Looking at this thread most other women agree.

Topgub · 03/11/2022 11:14

Eindaira · 03/11/2022 11:09

I'm the one that's going to have to either carry a pregnancy and care for a baby, adoption, or have an abortion, so I feel like of course I'm going to care about my contraception more. A man can just ejaculated and leave and pay maintenance if any, why would they care as much?

And there's your mysoginy.

Well done

Eindaira · 03/11/2022 11:15

Lookingforbargains · 03/11/2022 11:12

But what is your point?

That the person I was replying to was wrong to say it's misogyny to ever blame women for getting pregnant. And you literally backed me up by agreeing with me when you replied to me.

Livetoplay · 03/11/2022 11:15

God, another handmaiden… OP your DH will be okay.
Some of us women would just like the world to be a little more equal.

Why is it misogyny to point out why men might care less? I'm not saying anything negative about women. I'm saying there's less consequences for a man to ejaculated willy-nilly, that's just a fact. Perhaps you can tell me why a random man should care if I get pregnant?

Topgub · 03/11/2022 11:16

Eindaira · 03/11/2022 11:15

Except they're not wrong.

Excusing men because they won't have to face the consequences and blaming women because they will is mysoginy

Nobody is saying abortions are great.

Advocating that women have the freedom to exercise bodily autonomy and make their own reproductive decisions does not equal thinking abortions are great.

If you don't think women should be handled with 'kiddie gloves' then surely they're more than capable of making their own decisions about reproductive healthcare and don't need forced birthers weighing in on what they should do with their wombs.

But thinking that isn’t restricting anyone is it? I have my views, I also don’t believe I’m entitled to
impose them on anyone else so I would never want restrictions to be enforced. There seems to be a gap where you can’t marry the two in your mind. Not everyone with different opinions would actually impose them, although with the browbeating on this thread it’s not surprising some of you don’t quite understand or believe that.

Eindaira · 03/11/2022 11:18

Men could ejaculate in 20 women and get them all pregnant and his life will barely change so, if you think like one of those men you can see why they don't give a fuck about contraception.

Topgub · 03/11/2022 11:18

@Eindaira

Because they should have the same morals as women?

Is your bar really so low?

They should, but the fact is they don't. We don't live in an ideal world, men aren't going to all be decent men.

That the person I was replying to was wrong to say it's misogyny to ever blame women for getting pregnant. And you literally backed me up by agreeing with me when you replied to me.

What? I think you need to be clearer. You asked if it was misogyny to say you messed up the pill and got pregnant. I was clarifying that, no, that isn’t misogyny.

You have since elaborated and taken the scenario into the realms of misogyny by explaining that you, as the woman, should totally expect to bear the weight of responsibility for contraception. As other posters have pointed out, there’s the misogyny.

But the act of forgetting the pill and getting pregnant is not misogyny.

In pointing that out I am indeed, I suppose, agreeing with OP that not everything is misogyny. But we can all see, I hope, that the OP’s title was ridiculous and pointless.

Nope.

Just that they should be held to the same standards as men.

Can you answer my questions?

They're awful.

Sorry, but ‘kiddie gloves’ made me laugh 😂

@Cuppasoupmonster but where do you suppose that views like the ones you hold lead to?

Are you saying that a thought or a belief cannot be misogynistic if not acted upon? Because that is nonsense.

Nowhere because I will do absolutely nothing to act on them. Nor would I want to.

It isn’t misogynistic to say it’s preferable for women to use contraception rather than have an invasive and potentially upsetting abortion.
