Why do the national lottery send you the tease email knowing you can’t find out what you’ve won?

FWP I know, and obviously deep down I know I’ve won £2.70 or maybe a fiver if I’m lucky… but why oh why do the national lottery send you an email after midnight telling you that they have ‘good news about your ticket’ knowing they won’t allow you access to your account to see what you’ve actually won if you bought the ticket online? I know there’s probably a really special email if you’ve won big but why the big tease?

Oh I hate this too! Its like they want to troll you on purpose 😂 mind you if i got an email saying i had won £3 million or whatever id probably think it was a scam and ignore it, by forcing me to log in to my lotto account to check my prize amount it means I wouldn't be able to ignore it and potentially miss out on a big win, having said that as any amount under 5k (i think it is) is auto paid into your bank, it would be nice if for those amounts they could just tell you

Ekátn · 29/10/2022 05:59

This made me laugh because me and a colleague have had this conversation recently.

Both of us have been in the position where we got up early, checked our email them Couldn’t access the app to find out how much.

I did it the other week that prompted the discussion. Now both of us refuse to check email until later if we have a ticket.

Like you say, deep down you know it’s a small amount but you can’t help thinking it could be the big one.

Crucible · 29/10/2022 06:08

I think I read somewhere that if you have won a large amount then the email says so, it's only if you win small that it gives you the vague email! Annoying! Big amounts go straight into your bank account so you could just check your balance.

Ekátn · 29/10/2022 06:11

On a positive note op, I don’t have an email at all. So at least you have that lol 😂

startfresh · 29/10/2022 06:11

I think one of them the other day told me how much. Not sure which one, though! Thought it was a nice change.
Need to note the numbers down and check them yourself once the email comes in. It is super annoying!

Razzle5 · 29/10/2022 06:13

Can’t you check?

Justleaveitblankthen · 29/10/2022 06:16

You can check from 8am on the day after any game.

I often have to play this waiting game. The email usually arrives between 11pm-1am informing of a win.

Goldmember · 29/10/2022 06:22

I won too 🥂🎉. I don't play the lottery often, sometimes stick £10 on every 6 months or so. I won £4.10. 🏆

Toddlerteaplease · 29/10/2022 06:24

I agree. Postcode lottery do the same. But they do tell you what you've won in the email.

Probablynotamillionaire · 29/10/2022 07:17

Drum roll please… I have won £5.30

I won’t be running the heating at full blast today my friends 🤣

OP posts:
ouch321 · 29/10/2022 07:33

A whole £5.30.

WOW

Don't get giddy with the spending now :)

Never played NL myself cos I feel I'd have to pick so many combinations. Eg if I picked 123456 then I'd have to also pick 234567 and then I'd think but what if 345678 came up so I'd have to do that too. Etc

I just want to win 😢😢 Did anyone see that bloke in the paper who won £108 million moaning about his life? Honestly, if that was my
only problem…Just give it all away then 🤷‍♀️ Oh but he won’t will be?? Bitter…me??!!

I rolled my eyes so hard when I saw that this morning. He has enough money to do whatever he wants, whenever he wants.

if he is bored, that’s his own fault. I have no sympathy for the people who have the privilege of vast wealth then still moan ‘it’s not as great as people think it is’.

I know money doesn’t make you happy. But a lack of money does make people miserable and stressed and hugely reduces your choices.

ScarlettSunset · 29/10/2022 08:34

What times are you able to check?
I didn't realize there was a blocked time.

I often have to get up well before 6am and I've definitely logged in then. I had an email on Wednesday saying I'd won a prize so I checked that early as I decided if it was the euromillions jackpot, I wouldn't be rushing out to catch the train....

Me too.
Even if the choice was to be miserable either way, I'd still choose the option of being miserable WITH the money....

Do they? I've never bought online, do they demand your bank account details when you buy a ticket? Seems dodgy.

Probablynotamillionaire · 29/10/2022 08:39

@ScarlettSunset i think it is between midnight and 5am. They send the emails out at 00:30… a whole 4.5 hours of waiting to establish you’ve won a fiver.. meanwhile in that time you’ve googled houses for £5m and the cost of a private jet to the Madives just in case (I like to plan). Today I shall be mostly buying Cadbury’s giant buttons instead or maybe a bottle of Tesco plonk with my winnings (which are less than £3 when you deduct the cost of the actual ticket) 😂

OP posts:
ScarlettSunset · 29/10/2022 08:45

Well that's now ruined my dream that bigger winners probably get emailed later and that's why I didn't have a message when I woke up this morning....didn't know it was always just after midnight.
Enjoy your giant buttons!

To be fair, he was only saying he was bored initially dealing with the transition from working to not having to work. He'd rectified that by buying a doer-upper country mansion and working on that. But it was a bit of a shame that he didn't once mention the possibility of alleviating boredom by, say, volunteering, or using his money to do a bit of good in the world.

Jalepenojello · 29/10/2022 08:47

I’ve never had a problem logging on in the middle of the night. I just check my numbers and look at the prize breakdown because I’m impatient 🤷🏼‍♀️

Probablynotamillionaire · 29/10/2022 08:55

@Jalepenojello not quite as easy if you bought a lucky dip and didn’t note the numbers or indeed the millionaires raffle code 😉. We live in hope for the £1m raffle prize obvs. That’d pay for the heating bill 😆

OP posts:
Probablynotamillionaire · 29/10/2022 08:59

@ScarlettSunset i actually think bigger winners do get emailed later.. but there was a woman once on tv about 15 years ago who won a couple of £mil playing with her online account and said it showed in her online bank account straightaway..who knows? Maybe an actual winner will come along and put us out of our collective misery about the timing and wording of the email 😂

OP posts:
YaffleYaffle · 29/10/2022 09:04

I won about £800 on hot picks once and I’m sure I had a vague email.

I don’t play any more because I figured I would never get that lucky again!

I don’t note my numbers, I can log in and see them at anytime, including 3 am.

Probablynotamillionaire · 29/10/2022 09:10

@Jalepenojello no idea then. My access here in England won’t allow me past the log in stage..🤷‍♀️
