Why do the national lottery send you the tease email knowing you can’t find out what you’ve won?

FWP I know, and obviously deep down I know I’ve won £2.70 or maybe a fiver if I’m lucky… but why oh why do the national lottery send you an email after midnight telling you that they have ‘good news about your ticket’ knowing they won’t allow you access to your account to see what you’ve actually won if you bought the ticket online? I know there’s probably a really special email if you’ve won big but why the big tease?

Do they? I've never bought online, do they demand your bank account details when you buy a ticket? Seems dodgy.

What's dodgy about it? What do you think they're going to do with your bank details? Sell them to scammers? Why would it be any more dodgy than giving your bank details to your utility company, broadband provider etc?

The national lottery website says this…

I've always been able to log in and check my winnings on the National Lottery website immediately after receiving the email [which always arrives at exactly 00:34]. I don't use the app.

I remember that couple from Harrogate @ScarlettSunset. Blew the lot and split up. historybyday.com/human-stories/money-often-costs-too-much-lottery-winners-who-lost-it-all/2/

Edinvillian · 29/10/2022 09:21

Just tried to check the email I received when I won £20k but must've deleted it. I think it was slightly different from the usual email though.
As an aside, it wasn't paid directly into my bank, it was sent as a cheque.

Probablynotamillionaire · 29/10/2022 09:23

Ooh @Edinvillian how lovely! 👏👏

Sorry - it was you @Probablynotamillionaire that mentioned the couple who logged in and saw their huge balance

Youdoyoutoday · 29/10/2022 09:37

It's so annoying!! That small hope that you could possibly change your life only to fine out you've won.... £4.10! Yep, that's life changing! 🙄

Keyansier · 29/10/2022 10:00

The email is exactly the same whether you win £2.40 or £240 million.

berksandbeyond · 29/10/2022 10:11

This happened to a relative - he was working overseas and got an email saying they'd won. Wasn't able to log in as it wouldn't let him access the account from that country so he had 7 hours of thinking about how we'd spend the millions until we all woke up in the UK and could check for him... that he'd won £4

I don’t note my numbers, I can log in and see them at anytime, including 3 am.

You can't. The National Lotteries website says you can't log into your account between 2am and 6am.

Razzle5 · 29/10/2022 11:11

I don’t get it.

jot down your numbers
check the draw results
job done

I have definitely also logged in before 6am. Even in this last week.

How do you pay for broadband, utilities etc then?

OK, fair enough. You crack on, making your life more difficult than it needs to be.

You use your bank account to pay money in to buy the ticket.

I promise you I can 😂 I works nights. It’s never been an issue?

WeAreAllLionesses · 30/10/2022 00:34

This thread reminded me I have £11 in my account, just went to put it on a few games and couldn't as it was closed for purchasing tickets. I assume it's an anti gambling measure - if so I think that's good.

I don't. I top up my lotto account with my card.
I know you can set up a DD though.

Ekátn · 30/10/2022 06:22

I just looked at the website. You can’t log in between 2am and 6am.

Either people are mistaken and have logged in before 2am or after 6am or something isn’t working properly.

My app (don’t use the website) definitely doesn’t even load properly between these hours, despite the screen shot saying you can browse between those hours.

YeahmetooJill · 30/10/2022 06:26

Well I think you’ve answered your own question!

Juancornetto · 30/10/2022 06:34

All the emails are the same whatever you win, they can't give any indication of how much it may be as it's a data protection issue. Same as your bank won't email you with sensitive financial info, you have to logon to your account.

Just contacted Dr Ben. He asked by whom I'd been referred. Your bonus is secured @Gordon1188 and it only cost me £3000. Thanks. Alternatively I've reported your spam post.

Icepop79 · 15/03/2024 05:11

You would think that if Dr Benjamin was as good at winning the lottery as this poster suggests, he’d have won considerably more than $820,000. Maybe he didn’t want to seem too grabby on his first attempt…
