To think JKRowling should be in the House of Lords

She is probably the best selling living author writing in English

She has given a great deal of money to charity

She has conquered the disadvantages of being an unemployed single mother by her own efforts

She is a great role model for women and girls

OP posts:
EscapeRoomToTheSun · 28/10/2022 12:43

She is a reactionary who is leaning to the right as she ages. She will not end well. Think Richard Dawkins.

Sandysandwich · 28/10/2022 12:46

No, but the best selling english author is Agatha Christie anyway

I know shes not living, but it didn't qualify her for the house of lords either

She's not actually a great writer.

So? You don't happen to think she's a great writer but she is for many people and for many others a fabulous story teller.

OP was talking about best selling authors. She's 2nd by the way, only beaten by Danielle Steel. She's also 10th best selling author of all time. Quite an achievement don't you think? And well worthy of a spot in the HoL if it's something that she would consider.

Chikapu · 28/10/2022 12:49

the adulation of this woman on here is bizarre

It's weird, isn't it? She's not even someone that's on the radar of most people I know.

She is probably the best selling living author writing in English

I think Danielle Steel holds that title.

DismantledKing · 28/10/2022 12:50

There are so many people in the HOL that don’t deserve to be there; Digby fucking Jones anyone? JKR would make a great addition, despite all the wailing and gnashing of teeth from the usual suspects.

ReneBumsWombats · 28/10/2022 12:50

Underanothersky · 28/10/2022 11:05

I'd love to be as shit as she is.

TheodoraTheodora · 28/10/2022 12:42

And that's why single issue voters are easily manipulated into voting against their own best interests.

Absolutely. Seeing women on here saying they'll vote Tory because of one issue when they disagree with them on every single other policy terrifies me.

Completely agree with @Hiphopopotamonster . Great post by @InPraiseOfBacchus , although my own views don't tie in with JKR's.

So womens rights and safeguarding of kids is right wing? Hmm

Cheeseandpineappleonastick · 28/10/2022 12:52

I love Harry Potter and respect all her charity stuff. I also think it's ok to discuss how feminism fits in with modern gender issues, however she is too much and too angry at a vulenrable community of people. Not sure why she chose that as her hill to die on.

ReneBumsWombats · 28/10/2022 12:52

jeaux90 · 28/10/2022 12:51

These days, yes. That's what happens when the left ups and swings itself round 180 degrees.

Someone on here said that left wing misogynists are the worst and the right wing ones will at least hold the door for you.

Babasghost · 28/10/2022 11:44

Jkr is an awesome role model.
I think hol would be much enriched by her voice.

I do want to say This though.
There are hundreds of great women in politics who are being suppressed, beaten down and finding it hard to be heard because it is patriarchy on steroids. The fact that jkr can be such a queen and speak out clearly and loudly despite a constant hate campaign, barrage of death and rape threats is because her talent yields her enough cash to be largely untouchable.

What I'd really like is for the barriers to great female politicians to be burnt to the ground so that we can hear them, see them without the protection of wealth. Lets keep on working towards that. Lets keep on dpeaking up and supporting our sisters.

Hear hear. 👏👏

Easy ! Just copy someone else's (great) work.

Hiphopopotamonster · 28/10/2022 11:06

🙄the adulation of this woman on here is bizarre. But apparently mumsnet, like JKR, has become a grotesque single issue echo chamber.

Why wouldn't a single mother who became a bestselling author and donated her way out of billionairehood (but still pays all of her taxes) not be adulated? Role model to us all.

Untitledsquatboulder · 28/10/2022 13:57

@Pugalicious so whose great work did JK Rowling copy then?

Untitledsquatboulder · 28/10/2022 14:02

we should take a very dim view of her claim to speak for all women

Well I've personally never heard her claim that but , if you discount "women who are biologically men, " which groups of women do you feel she's missing out?

DismantledKing · 28/10/2022 14:06

Untitledsquatboulder · 28/10/2022 13:57

@Pugalicious so whose great work did JK Rowling copy then?

You often get this claim from er… ‘less successful’ YA authors who have gladly played the pronoun game, and yet can’t sell their terrible fanfic books. It’s not uncommon to see their like on twitter.

Brefugee · 28/10/2022 14:07

Easy ! Just copy someone else's (great) work.

go on then. List the copying rather than "using as inspiration" which every writer does except the very few truly exceptional and original ones.

She isn't "adulated" on here, how bizarre. She isn't, however, reviled for things that she hasn't actually said.

So while i'm interested to see these great lists of plagiarism, i won't hold my breath because they are as likely to be as forthcoming as the examples of actual transphobia that she apparently spouts.

I love the HP stories, even while i sometimes roll my eyes at the writing, the characters, the phrasing and the nominative determinism (sp?) that they are choc-full of. In the same way i loved the GRR (haha he even stole his bloody name) Martin Song of Ice and Fire books and countless others that are re-telling, re-hashes and mix-ups of other stories ancient and not so old.

neverbeenskiing · 28/10/2022 14:08

InPraiseOfBacchus · 28/10/2022 12:22

Nope - even if she supports my views, she's a hack with a god complex who has literally used her wealth to tastelessly taunt people she disagrees with in arguments. She's hijacked issues when other authors (S. Rushdue) have been horribly physically attacked and made the whole thing about her.
She has lied about being doxxed for sympathy when the address in question was already public. We should take a very dim view of hearing her claim to speak for all women.

I won't support someone just because they tickle my fancy regarding my favourite hot-button topic.

I completely agree. The incessant fawning over her on this site makes me cringe.

BlackForestCake · 28/10/2022 14:11

Seeing women on here saying they'll vote Tory because of one issue when they disagree with them on every single other policy terrifies me

You should probably get your favoured party to abandon their insane misogynist positions that threaten the safety of women and girls, then.

ZuttZeVootEeeVo · 28/10/2022 14:15

I dont know if she should be or not, but i think the idea should be put out here, just so i can see people having tantrums at the mere thought of it.

DismantledKing · 28/10/2022 14:17

Seeing women on here saying they'll vote Tory because of one issue when they disagree with them on every single other policy terrifies me

well, as a long-standing active member of the Labour Party I won’t ever vote for the Tories, but I won’t vote Labour either until they sort this out.

UWhatNow · 28/10/2022 14:18

TheodoraTheodora · 28/10/2022 12:41

... politics outside of the obvious issue. However as far as I can tell that single issue is preventing many women for voting for a party who cares about poverty, working class, free health care etc.

And who comes off worse in all those situations? women. And what party can definitively say that male bodied people are not women? And that they recognise that women and girls need special protections in law? Because if you can I’ll vote for them.

Ignoring this threat to the existential rights of biological women does not make your politics smarter. It further marginalises your poor, working class women and girls and makes healthcare unsafe.

Brefugee · 28/10/2022 14:20

can anyone give examples of the fawning?

JenniferBarkley · 28/10/2022 14:21
