To think JKRowling should be in the House of Lords

She is probably the best selling living author writing in English

She has given a great deal of money to charity

She has conquered the disadvantages of being an unemployed single mother by her own efforts

She is a great role model for women and girls

it’s not just what she says, it’s what she supports, what she reposts, what she promotes and who she backs.

Yeah you mentioned pronoun badges.
I agree with her on that. I will not lie and if I use pronouns then I do so in line with a person's sex. Is that actually hateful? My refusal to lie?

Thankfully support for JKR tends to be closely aligned with increased age, it’s just one of those issues older people will promote until they start to fade out, like racism and homophobia

That's not actually true or accurate.
While JKs books continue to remain popular with children her opinions on the protection or womens rights and children's safety are popular with those aged late teens and onwards, especially women. I mean you can pretend it's just oldies like me that support her pro women view but the reality is many many women 20 years younger than me support her and agree with her.

Igmum · 29/10/2022 16:57

@AnApparitionQuipped yes I do know that we don't vote for the House of Lords. It was meant to be a joke. Clearly didn't work 🤷‍♀️

My 16 year old son and his friends agree with her too!

VinoDino · 29/10/2022 17:02

even the majority of feminists on here want nothing to do with the JKR circle jerk

Evidence?

You keep coming out with blanket statements but no evidence to back it up. You don't like what she's said, tweeted, retweeted, liked yadda yadda. Copy and paste them, it's not difficult.

Where's the evidence that it's just 'older' women who realise that the TWAW rhetoric is dangerous Emperor's New Clothes bollocks?

The day that anyone who spouts this JKR is hateful pish backs it up with any verbatim evidence I'll turn into a man. (Which apparently is possible).

CrossStichQueen · 29/10/2022 17:10

Also out of 508 votes 82% clearly support JK. I doubt the entire 82% are all oldies like me.

It would be interesting to know the age of the voters.

Just to point out that I voted YABU because I don't believe the HoL should exist, and it's no place for a feminist - there may be others who voted YABU for this reason, rather than a lack of support for JKR.

As I’ve said countless times (odd how lack of readily ability correlates to JKR fandom on here at times)

it’s not just what she says, it’s what she supports, what she reposts, what she promotes and who she backs.

I personally find her actual comments to be pretty shit and dislike her for that alone, but it goes beyond that.

She actively supports women who have a far harder line view on trans men and women than she has outwardly said herself, she often likes tweets that are much more hateful than any she has written herself, and promotes companies that sell merchandise that’s pretty fucking offensive, and again nothing she would outwardly say herself.

When someone is perfectly nice on social media posts but likes the odd EDL tweet it’s pretty clear they’re not as nice as they portray on their own channels.

Same applies here.

You don’t have to swear to be hateful

You don’t have to issue death threats to be hateful

But you will never understand this issue, so there is little point engaging further

Thankfully support for JKR tends to be closely aligned with increased age, it’s just one of those issues older people will promote until they start to fade out, like racism and homophobia.

Guilt by association is a dangerous game to play for TRAs.

You go first with who JKR supports, then I'll go next with who the TRAs support.

Feyrethefae · 29/10/2022 17:50

For me personally, I also hold issue with the fact that the same people on FWR threads who openly mock trans people, openly declare their love/like/support/adoration etc for JKR. So it's possible that I'm seeing the entire undertone of the movement/JKR, as problematic and hateful because of these posters and associating JKR with them.

midgetastic · 29/10/2022 17:53

Any poster who regularly mocked transpeople would be barred

Again it's a case of throw mud and hope some sticks

Well there are plenty still standing, plenty pop up very regularly on FWR threads, so I don't think that's true. I personally never report the posts because I think they should stand. If what you're saying was correct, there wouldn't be many FWR regular posters left on the board.

Again, receipts?

Who are you talking about and where is the evidence to back up your statement?

BonnyT · 29/10/2022 17:59

Love JK Rowling! Her books made my son love reading. That make her pretty fucking phenomenal in my eyes.

I'm not in the business of screenshotting these things when I see them, I'll have a look and do so.

So JKR is responsible for everything anyone who liked her did?

Crikey.

So JKR is responsible for the actions of everyone who supports her?

Are you sure you want to go into that kind of guilt by association?

Feyrethefae · 29/10/2022 18:40

Goodness me, no. Sorry, I think I've been misunderstood because I wasn't clear enough. I'm pointing out a potential flaw in my thinking. I don't see much of JKR, I don't follow her on Twitter and the only time I hear of her is on MN, on the FWR board. I think I hold a much bigger issue with certain posters on FWR who associate themselves with JKR than JKR herself. I'm not keen on the woman by any means, I agree with some of what she says, not all, but I think my bigger issue is with others rather than her. I'm not saying that JKR is responsible for everyone who aligns themselves with her, not at all.

SantaCarlaCalifornia · 29/10/2022 18:43

What classes as mocking a trans person?

Correctly sexing them? Or something else?

For the record, I've never read a JKR book, I've watched the HP films, and I've never thought about her much apart from having respect for her charitable contributions.

What I absolutely love now is how much it pisses people off that they can't cancel her in the usual ways. It's hilarious how much it drives people insane.

ReneBumsWombats · 29/10/2022 18:45

Imagine what it's like being "misunderstood" when you've been clear as a bell...

Asdavaluesausage · 29/10/2022 18:55

In answer to your question @Millsbills yes. Dr Ivy has issued death threats, told lesbians to ‘get over their phobia of penises’, said TERFS ‘deserve to die in a grease fire’. And posted a gif of a skeleton dancing in a grave after finding out a young woman who disagreed with Dr Ivy had died. And under Ivy’s own name so no ambiguity there. So yeah. That’s the TRA stance. What has JK retweeted that is comparable to that.

The posts where posters have said "I identify as a carrot today!" and the like are the main ones that I mean and the ones I see most often. They're only there to mock transpeople and don't add anything to the conversation, just removes the value of the entire conversation, which I think is a pity. Only my opinion, however.

Asdavaluesausage · 29/10/2022 18:58

Ooh so Have you gone over to TRA Twitter and told them they’re nasty and to stop mocking women, threatening women and hurling abuse? Or is it just women you want to be nice?

CrossStichQueen · 29/10/2022 19:00

Such posts are rare these days on the FWR boards given that identifying as a carrot could be taken seriously.

Do you not understand the difference between mocking an ideology and mocking a person?
The ideology that is "I identify as X therefore I am X" is ludicrous and would not be accepted if it was age or race instead of gender.

I don't want women to be "nice". I don't think mocking is acceptable under any circumstances, and yes, that goes for TRAs who mock women.

It was my question actually. Were they not prosecuted for that? Regardless, it wouldn't be surprising if anonymous death threats are not trans supporters.
