Temp ban if you don't rtft

ImAvingOops · 28/10/2022 07:45

This isn't a TAAT, but it's a thread about lots of threads. Maybe I'm getting old and cranky and remembering the past through rose tinted specs, but were posters always so lazy when it comes to reading the thread?
If nothing else, people should read what the OP posts before jumping in with some half arsed comment that's either completely irrelevant, or has been addressed a million times already by the posters who did bother to read the thread!
I know threads can be long, but if you don't have time, just pick a shorter one to read.

AIBU to think that if posters don't rtft, and ask some fucking stupid question that they would already know the answer to if they'd bothered to read, they should get a two week posting ban?

PAFMO · 28/10/2022 07:48

I think it's always been so.
I've been here since 2004 and don't read every post on a thread. What with having a life outside of MN etc.
I read all the OP's posts now we have that function though.

AppleKatie · 28/10/2022 07:49

Yeah it’s always been the way. Nice but unworkable idea though 😂

MrsLargeEmbodied · 28/10/2022 07:49

i think the threads are often a lot longer than ever

i always read Read the Fucking Thread, and take unnecessary offence

MrsLargeEmbodied · 28/10/2022 07:50

agree that the function to read op posts only is ideal

AuntieStella · 28/10/2022 07:51

YANBU, but there would be no posters left.....

We've all done it, sometimes by carelessness, or forgetting to hit refresh or whatever.

So I'd limit the ban to those who do it totally deliberately eg "I haven't RTFT but has anyone suggested XYZ"

Yes, dear, the last 200 posts have been all about XYZ and why it won't work in these circs.

(Cancel the cheque on your way out)

FlirtyMelons · 28/10/2022 07:52

There is no excuse most of the time, read all OPs post at the minimum. Only issue is where OP name changes so the function to read all their posts doesn't work.

Iwantmyoldnameback · 28/10/2022 07:53

A bit harsh there BUT some of the threads wouldn't be so long if people actually did read and not ask so many bloody silly questions (especially when the answer is in the original post) or make suggestions that have already been rejected.
I'm changing to "Harsh but fair".

ImAvingOops · 28/10/2022 07:56

At the very least, people could read the opening post properly. I get that if a thread has gone on for 800 posts, then it's reasonable to miss the odd thing. But so many people don't even read the opening post, when the OP has carefully set out the relevant information!

OP posts:
PeaceX · 28/10/2022 07:57

Depends how long it is. Hate when people miss a detail in the OPENING post though. That is racing to have a say without pausing to read what the problem is.
But I've done myself on occasion 😬😳

Westendbuoys · 28/10/2022 07:58

They can't get rid of the bloody trolls so I'm not sure how they'd go about banning anyone who doesn't read every post.

Can we temp ban people who post an OP and then never come back or only answer one question. Now that that is really annoying.

BarbaraofSeville · 28/10/2022 07:59

How about making it so no-one can post on a thread until they've clicked on 'view all' of the OPs posts and a 30 second delay?

Then they've no excuse to not RTFT and ask for information that has already been posted or make the same suggestion as 200 previous posters.

Would stop threads running to hundreds of posts, and even reaching the 1000 post limit where half the posts fall into one of these two categories.

Yes.

OP - "I am a widow with 3 children."

Poster - "How many children do you have OP? Where is their dad in all this? LTB"

ImAvingOops · 28/10/2022 07:59

I always think that non returning OPs are trolls. I mean, it's just basic good manners to return to your own thread.

OP posts:
JauntyJinty · 28/10/2022 08:03

I've seen quite a few were OP gets annoyed with being asked questions they've already answered - it's so clear people get half way through the 1st post and think they have all the infomration they could possilbey need!

I rememeber 1 example where loads of people had cleary read the title, clicked into the thread and replied without even reading the, quite short, 1st post!

I've decided to write this having read only the 1st post with no sense of irony!

Shannith · 28/10/2022 08:03

I think the blue looks nicest.

SaintVitasShagulaitas · 28/10/2022 08:03

Don't be daft. Who has time to read the full thread?

SuperCamp · 28/10/2022 08:05

MN is getting bogged down by idiocy.

Threads where someone has a complex problem and a handful of posters are engaged and offering sustained support are swamped with one liners offering the same misplaced suggestion by people who have not RTFT, or acres of scrolling through nitwits who quote the entire OP.

It’s digital littering.

SuperCamp · 28/10/2022 08:07

SaintVitasShagulaitas · 28/10/2022 08:03

Don't be daft. Who has time to read the full thread?

Reading the OP’s posts saved everyone’s time.

Why would they OP want to wade through loads of replies from people who think that after 800 posts they are the only person to have suggested spa day / LTB / where is the father in all this etc?

Hooverphobe · 28/10/2022 08:08

No. I don’t even fucking know you - I’m not doing homework for you!

I think it supposed to be read as read the fucking thread because usually people who 'say' it are pissed off with someone.

PinkButtercups · 28/10/2022 08:09

Pretty much no one has time to RTFT. The function to be able to just read OP's post is helpful now though.

But a 2 week ban? What are you MN police? 🥹.

SuperCamp · 28/10/2022 08:11

At work, does anyone who was absent from the first 45 minutes of a meeting open the door, shout ‘have you thought of raising the price?’ and dash out again?

poorpaws · 28/10/2022 08:13

I take the time to read the whole thread and find someone has already said what I was going to suggest so don't post. If I haven't time to read the whole thread I don't comment. It's not difficult and I spend far too long reading repeat answers so I agree a ban is needed 😀. I read this whole thread.

SuspiciousHedgehog · 28/10/2022 08:13

Only if the mumsnet police explains every abbreviation they use, in their OP.

I am not referring to the reference page to decode the pi*sy rant of a school prefect.

PAFMO · 28/10/2022 08:14

SuperCamp · 28/10/2022 08:11

What a ridiculous comparison.
