Temp ban if you don't rtft

ImAvingOops · 28/10/2022 07:45

This isn't a TAAT, but it's a thread about lots of threads. Maybe I'm getting old and cranky and remembering the past through rose tinted specs, but were posters always so lazy when it comes to reading the thread?
If nothing else, people should read what the OP posts before jumping in with some half arsed comment that's either completely irrelevant, or has been addressed a million times already by the posters who did bother to read the thread!
I know threads can be long, but if you don't have time, just pick a shorter one to read.

AIBU to think that if posters don't rtft, and ask some fucking stupid question that they would already know the answer to if they'd bothered to read, they should get a two week posting ban?

OP posts:
itsgettingweird · 28/10/2022 08:53

O read the OPs posts. That's the helpful thing with the filter button!

I don't tend to read the whole replies on threads with 500 odd posts already - I'll skim.

The only threads I read properly are the funny ones.

If an OP wants advice about something I'll read their information and offer my 2 pennies worth. What advice others have given is irrelevant to me. I'm either repeating good advice or going against the grain.

Advice is not an instruction. The OP can do what they want with it Grin

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 28/10/2022 08:39

The function to read all of the OPs posts doesn't exist in the app

Was just going to say this. For that reason I don't click on any thread where there's more than around 70 odd posts because I don't want to have to wade through them all for the OPs updates

ImAvingOops · 28/10/2022 08:55

Well yes, that is true. How about I amend my request to at least read the OP's posts?

OP posts:
SpidersAreShitheads · 28/10/2022 08:55

Sorry, NRTFT but I think you should LTB. And cancel the cheque.

Only kidding.

I agree it's annoying OP. On lots of threads it isn't actually a conversation of any kind, it's just a load of strangers shouting into a vacuum. MN is so much better when people take the time to interact with each other properly. Unless it's to call each other names, of course.

Testina · 28/10/2022 08:56

If people are out with the, “if that’s all you’ve got to worry about” line, can I add my minor peeves that I’d like to see on here? 😀

  • stop using “DH” when your detailing some truly arseholian behaviour with nothing dear or darling about it
  • MN, please lock the ridiculous but not offensive troll posts (like duck in a tree) because although I know you don’t want the troll to have attention, we lose some really funny replies
  • MN, please stop deleting threads that go against an OP who then complains of “privacy concerns” when (a) they’re really not identifiable and (b) posters have taken time to right really good replies that are going to help other people

Thank you 😀
And yes, I agree with you on RTFT!

Rosio · 28/10/2022 08:57

The 'reading OP posts' function is only on the web browser though, it should be on the app as well

And yes, I agree with you on RTFT!

Would it work if we agreed that on those occasions the "D" refers to "dickhead" instead?

Agree with the other points. I love a thread which has become unintentionally hilarious 😅

ImAvingOops · 28/10/2022 09:01

@Testina i always read 'dh' as sarcastic when a poster is referring to an arsehole husband. And I agree it's a shame when threads with valuable information get lost because an OP has thrown their toys out of the pram and had their thread deleted.

OP posts:
AuntieStella · 28/10/2022 09:01

stop using “DH” when your detailing some truly arseholian behaviour with nothing dear or darling about it

But D is such a useful letter - dickhead, dog-breathed, dratted, damned etc

And you get the extra nuance when its 'D'H

(plus everything that comes with the binding of a community by shared slang)

I think trolls have to be deleted, because this place is close enough to fantasy island without actually making it open season.

But I agree that threads and posts should not routinely be deleted for "privacy"

LookItsMeAgain · 28/10/2022 09:18

@MissBattleaxe - "Also, there should be auto-text for: cancel the cheque. LTB. Your NDN is a CF. Your dog should have been on a lead."

Yes!!! I am so here for this!!!!

Can I add that there should be some form of shorthand for "No you don't have to offer them a lift" or "You should only loan money you can afford to write off" as well while we're at it???

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 28/10/2022 09:19

Need a diagram!

LookItsMeAgain · 28/10/2022 09:19

@ImAvingOops - I think a 48 hour posting restriction would work well instead of a 2 week ban. If they keep doing it, then the posting restriction increases by a further 48 hours each time.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 28/10/2022 09:19

I completely and totally agree with you, OP.

When people say that a thread is already too long to read all the replies before they post their own, do they really not realise that their doing so will only make a 'too long' thread even longer?

Also, if you've decided that it's 'too long' to read, then why are you posting anyway? Whom do you expect to be reading your post? Or do you expect them to ignore hundreds of other posts from inferior people but then make certain to notice the solid gold that YOU, Queen Of All Threads, will reliably have contributed (even if it's the exact same thing as the first 50 responses said, before the thread moved way on)?

SuspiciousHedgehog · 28/10/2022 09:20

You lot will kill mumsnet

Thankfully, none of you are in charge

😬

Rosio · 28/10/2022 08:57

The 'reading OP posts' function is only on the web browser though, it should be on the app as well

To view only the OP's posts if you're using the MN App, you go into the thread, swipe left on the OP's opening post and click "Filter".
Then you will only see the OP's posts/replies.

Whatsleftnow · 28/10/2022 09:24

Cancel the cheque.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 28/10/2022 09:25

A lot of the posters who jump in and out, totally oblivious to what anybody else (including the OP) might have said often remind me of Roger from Roger & Elaine:

www.csr.utexas.edu/personal/amy/joke7.html

olapexidum · 28/10/2022 09:26

This is AIBU, you are asking for peoples opinions. Lots of people's opinions!

Why would I read 50 other people's opinions before giving my own?

I almost never read ALL other responses, that's ludicrous!

You don't complete opinion polls by asking each voter to check what other voters voted before giving their vote, do you?

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 28/10/2022 09:30

Also, if you've decided that it's 'too long' to read, then why are you posting anyway?
Because you have some advice to offer/knowledge to share?

Whom do you expect to be reading your post? Or do you expect them to ignore hundreds of other posts from inferior people but then make certain to notice the solid gold that YOU,
I don't know about anyone else but with really long threads, I read the OP's posts then start with the latest posts, not the first.
I don't expect anyone to read my posts although I am of course solid gold !

StaunchMomma · 28/10/2022 09:32

Maybe they don't have time to RTFT because they're, you know, MOTHERS!!

We're all busy, luv!

I doubt Mumsnet HQ would go for this at all as their business model relies on footfall and I doubt very much they would want to discourage people from visiting the site when they only have a short amount of time to spare. If people want to post they are allowed to post.

Others can just scroll on and ignore it.

Longtimelurkerfinallyposts · 28/10/2022 09:32

Yes! Yes! Yes!
It's so annoying to see threads clogged up with multiple posters who obviously haven't read any of the previous replies, so they don't know (a) that their particular gem of wisdom isn't as special and unique as they thought and/or (b) there's been an update/ major development -sometimes even from the OP themselves- which makes their advice totally pointless/ irrelevant.
If you really want to help someone by offering your advice, why wouldn't you take the time and trouble to see what's already been said? Especially what the OP themselves have said?!
I think some people might think an automatic 2-week posting ban is a but harsh, but I think a shorter one for first offences might do the trick, and make people a bit more considerate.

I like that idea.

I'd like to see trolls and arsey posters dealt with my MNHQ. There are some really nasty posters who enjoy kicking people when they're down, but MN leave some of their posts up, even when reported. They are usually people who don't RTFT either. TBH, I think that's why some OP's don't come back to their threads - to much nastiness.
