Temp ban if you don't rtft

This isn't a TAAT, but it's a thread about lots of threads. Maybe I'm getting old and cranky and remembering the past through rose tinted specs, but were posters always so lazy when it comes to reading the thread?
If nothing else, people should read what the OP posts before jumping in with some half arsed comment that's either completely irrelevant, or has been addressed a million times already by the posters who did bother to read the thread!
I know threads can be long, but if you don't have time, just pick a shorter one to read.

AIBU to think that if posters don't rtft, and ask some fucking stupid question that they would already know the answer to if they'd bothered to read, they should get a two week posting ban?

I absolutely loathe it when you get something like the OP saying ‘does anyone know who owns Facebook’ and you get response after response of posters saying ‘Mark Zuckerberg’. Why does it need to be said more than once?

KatherineJaneway · 28/10/2022 08:16

Can be hard on a fast moving thread though. You've spent time writing your reply and in the meantime, the OP has updated with a drip feed that makes your answer irrelevant.

AuntieStella · 28/10/2022 08:17

I'd extend the ban to those who don't swear properly!!

Grin

This is a site where swearing is explicitly permitted, so if you want to swear, do so without asterisks.

(And once you've been here a little while, the MN shared jargon will have seeped in and you'll just know the acronyms. Shared language binds communities)

PeloFondo · 28/10/2022 08:17

It's the same as on FB

Post in a style group "got this top from next, was £20 and they had loads of colours and it fits true to size"

First questions
Where from hun?
Did they have other colours?
How much?
What's the sizing like?

Confused

That would be a question better aimed at google, it's a straight request for info, not a discussion.
I wouldn't even clicks on such a thread

At work, does anyone who was absent from the first 45 minutes of a meeting open the door, shout ‘have you thought of raising the price?’ and dash out again?

Yes, they do! Or pretty much. MN is no different from RL conversations - lots of people having an opinion and just jumping in, whether or not they’ve been listening, or their point is relevant or has already been made. Probably having side conversations at the same time.

Lampshadered · 28/10/2022 08:25

Just ignore it.

While it's annoying, one person that hasn't rtft before posting doesn't clog up a thread.

20 replies to RTFT clogs up the thread.

Or worse is when one person replies directly to the late arrival explaining why their suggestion won't work. The late arrival replies to that poster and there is a thread within a thread where the late arrival and the updater talk directly to each other.

ImAvingOops · 28/10/2022 08:27

While I'm here having a moan, I really don't like the function to quote entire posts. I much preferred it when we had to copy and paste the relevant part of the post we wanted to quote. Having to scroll past reams of quotes that I already read when they were first posted, is annoying and probably contributes to people not reading threads properly.

TAAT?

MooseBreath · 28/10/2022 08:30

If the thread is under 50 posts, then sure, it's reasonable to RTFT. But when there are loads of posts and the thread has been derailed by a couple posters who are often off-topic or completely missing the point of the OP, I think it's alright to leave an opinion or ask a question (especially if the OP's posts have been read).

This

Thread is ridiculous and a waste of time. MNHQ is not going to discourage engagement in this way. Why would they?

ImAvingOops · 28/10/2022 08:35

its not just the one person who hasn't rtft being the problem. Don't want to get deleted from my own thread but one example which springs to mind is a poster worried about her overworking dh. Cue loads of posts telling her to get a job herself to alleviate the pressure even though she had clearly stated that she already had one. It was just an excuse to pile on the OP and not help her with what was quite a serious issue.
I know MN is entertainment, but it's also a place where people come with genuine worries and really needing help. When a thread is serious, at least read what the OP has said.

MissBattleaxe · 28/10/2022 08:37

I get annoyed when people title their AIBU posts as "AIBU" without putting anything in the bloody subject line.

The "read all OP posts" function is great and doesn't take long to skim read.

Also, there should be auto-text for: cancel the cheque. LTB. Your NDN is a CF. Your dog should have been on a lead.

ImAvingOops · 28/10/2022 08:38

This really isn't meant to be a TAAT - it's about lots of threads. It might just be my perception or the types of topics I've clicked on, but recently it seems like this is happening across lots of threads.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 28/10/2022 08:39

The function to read all of the OPs posts doesn't exist in the app

SuspiciousHedgehog · 28/10/2022 08:40

Of all the things you could get annoyed about in this dystopian age.

I wish I could get worked up about this, what a privilege if your biggest problem is trying to micromanage mumsnettters

ThatGirlInACountrySong · 28/10/2022 08:43

Most threads end up deleted or are troll posts

So how would you feel about your 2 week ban in that instance?

How would you keep it fair so All who commit this sun are punished?? And not just the ones posters like you report?

Extra work for MNHQ who don't seem to have enough time for other things let alone adding in this

ImAvingOops · 28/10/2022 08:44

Oh give over @SuspiciousHedgehog
guessing you are one of the culprits Wink

Believe it or not, I can get annoyed about lots of things at once.
Do you go on the Christmas threads too and tell them not to be wasting their attention on trivia while the world is so dystopian?

OP posts:
Doyoumind · 28/10/2022 08:44

I can somewhat forgive people for not reading hundreds of posts, though I don't understand how they can imagine at that point they are saying something that hasn't been said multiple times before. I don't know why people don't at least read the OP's posts.

There was a thread last night I recognised to be a troll and warned of it before there were 30 posts to dissuade posters. I think it was pulled before it even got to 100 posts but people couldn't be bothered to RTFT, including what was a rather alarming second post by the OP.

Mumsnet is successful because of the number of visitors.

Draconian rules to satify you would leadnto a major cut in traffic.

You are literally pissing in the wind, as well as showing yourself to be a micromanaging arsehole.

I used full sweary words just for you

vodkaredbullgirl · 28/10/2022 08:48

I know what you mean about people not reading the post properly. To ban poster's is a bit ott, MNHQ have enough trying to moderate posts and ban trolls.

ImAvingOops · 28/10/2022 08:49

You are assuming this is my biggest worry in life. It really isn't.

I don't know how it would work irl. I'm not at all technically minded but if my phone knows I'm looking at holidays in Greece, I'm sure there's way to track repeat offenders

OP posts:
SuspiciousHedgehog · 28/10/2022 08:50

Perhaps the OP could volunteer her time to scrape the boards for the thousands of people who haven't RTFT

😂
