Not putting the heating on yet

We live in the south and I’m insisting we don’t put the heating on until it gets properly cold. It’s 15 degrees overnight at the moment!!!

DP disagrees and wants it on

have you put yours on yet?

Doesn’t that mean that your heating is on all night, though? Maintaining the same heat as in the day? I couldn’t bear it. We’ve only had ours on overnight on about five occasions in the last twenty years. No wonder people’s bills are huge.

No, people normally have the thermostat set at one temperature during the day and a lower one at night. Mine is 19 degrees between 8 am and 10 pm and 10 degrees between 10 pm and 8 am. I don’t work so tend to get out of bed fairly late and if I’m sat down, I might boost the temperature for an hour or so to 20 degrees.

I havnt no, I am having some work done and my front and back door are wide open, I wearing a vet top and a jumper and I am warm. My thermostat is currently 20.5 degrees.

we haven't put ours on yet, as the weather has been quite mild and on closer days, we've managed with putting on extra layers.

in previous years, i've just put it on as without thinking about it Blush,

we had a new boiler fitted with A Hive thermostat in the spring, so haven't really used the heating yet, so i'll be interested to see how good the new boiler is when we do start using it.

JadeSeahorse · 28/10/2022 11:32

Our heating is on the thermostat which has very rarely clicked on although it is only set at 15 degrees presently. The boiler just comes on for 40 minutes twice per day to heat the water - standard boiler.

However, we have been putting the gas fire on as low a setting as possible most days from lunchtime onwards which is located in the sitting room. This is working out absolutely fine at present.

Ours is on in the evenings, thermostat set at 21. I don't like being too hot but that's a comfortable temp.

notacooldad · 28/10/2022 13:28

I'm up North and havent felt the need to have the heating on yet. It's been quite mild si far.
I've not even had my big coat on either.

13C daytime in my part of Scotland, but heating been on since August!

OriginalUsername3 · 28/10/2022 13:52

No heating yet but it's about 21 during the day and 19 at night in my flay.

Rexthesnail · 28/10/2022 14:03

@TwoRockSalmonAndAHaporthOfChips It's not that cold at the moment and it doesn't drop so low that it needs to be on for long when it is on. Its more like a little top up. I'm also up in the night a lot and having to get up in the middle of the night when it's cold is awful. It costs around £10 a week, it went up to £12 the other week. I don't think that's huge? But I'm not sure what's normal tbh.

We have a room thermostat and thermostatic radiator valves, but we still turn the heating controls to ‘off’ in the spring when we don’t need it on at all any more. It has a frost guard setting which would ensure that nothing could freeze, especially as the boiler is in our garage. But I can’t see the point of not taking some control of the system yourself. Once we turn it back on for the winter, the stats and the timer will take care of it. But we do only have the heating timed to be on for two hours each morning and evening - unless it’s very cold outside we don’t need more than that, and it would be wasteful to have it clicking on and off during the day - and especially at night, when we never heat the house except in the bitterest of weather.

This is something that is individual to homes, families and heating systems, so there’s no right way to do it. Just whatever suits you.

We used to switch off the thermo controllers when the weather warmed up but now we don't bother and it makes no difference to the cost. It's an air source heating system and set to come on if the temp drops below 18 (during the day) it doesn't come on at night unless it drops below 16 I think
