Not putting the heating on yet

We live in the south and I’m insisting we don’t put the heating on until it gets properly cold. It’s 15 degrees overnight at the moment!!!

DP disagrees and wants it on

have you put yours on yet?

I'm with you @Sagittarius25. We have a thermostat in the living room, and thermostats on our radiators, so we don't "turn the heating on/off" the thermostat does it for us. We also have frost control so it comes on at night at a very low temperature if it is several degrees below zero.

Where is it warm enough for shorts and T-shirts? I put my shorts away weeks ago. The forecast for today is 15 degrees and wet, and 14 degrees tomorrow

It's warm enough for shorts here in East Anglia. It's 19 here today and 21 tomorrow.

Rexthesnail · 28/10/2022 09:19

I dont understand this, surely people just keep their thermostat at a temperature and if it falls below the heating comes on? I've turned mine down a little bit though.

RampantIvy · 28/10/2022 09:14

Most days this week it's been 16-18 degrees and generally sunny.

That's too cold for shorts for me. I need at least 22 degrees.

It is currently pouring with rain here in Yorkshire. However, our reservoirs need it.

Well that's the thing isn't it - we're all different. We do different jobs and feel the cold differently.

I'm constantly on the move outdoors so don't need tons of layers. Leggings, a f-shirt and a jumper are fine - I had lunch outside wearing just that on Tuesday.

However if my job was sitting still at a desk all day, I'd probably be freezing without some extra layers on me Grin

RebeccaCloud9 · 28/10/2022 09:21

We'd have to put our thermostat on higher than we do in winter for it to even kick in at the moment. It's mostly too hot for a jumper. We do live in a new build though, totally devoid of character but the insulation is spot on!

MercuryRising · 28/10/2022 09:22

Mine hasn't been on yet. I had the fan on in my bedroom last night as I was hot.

DelilahBucket · 28/10/2022 09:24

It's been on occasionally, usually for just 20-30 mins. We've had some really cold days. If it drops below 18 in the house we put it on. I refuse to be frozen cold in my home and we've taken significant steps to reduce usage. Normally just the process of cooking dinner is sufficient to warm downstairs for the evening.
On the other hand I had my step MIL sat huddled up in a full on winter coat when she visited last week because she was so cold. It was 19 degrees. I didn't comment and just sat there in my t-shirt 😂. She isn't elderly or poorly either.

Xmassprout · 28/10/2022 09:25

It's been too warm here for heating just yet. I still have windows wide open during the day, and still open a crack at night. We still only need jumpers when going out for walks

Not if you’re poor. We have the themostat set to 9.5 to stop the pipes freezing but we only turn it up to 22 maybe 1-2 hours a day to make the heating come on when it’s utterly freezing. Otherwise we just don’t have the hearing on. (Low income family, 2 disabled people, tax credits etc). Lots of families can’t afford any heating at all.

Upwiththelark76 · 28/10/2022 09:32

Nope . It’s not even chilly .

Here, have a clap for your bravery....

exactly

put your heating on
dont put your heating on

alloalloallo · 28/10/2022 09:37

I’m in the south and haven’t really put mine on either yet. It’s still really warm down here - 16/17 degrees today.

We’ve got a 1 hour button boost on our thermostat, I’ve boosted it a couple of times as it’s got a bit chilly, but haven’t put in “on-on” yet.

RampantIvy · 28/10/2022 09:48

I didn't comment and just sat there in my t-shirt 😂. She isn't elderly or poorly either.

Have a clap for your sneery "I don't feel cold at 19 degrees when I'm sat still" comment.

I would be wearing a jumper at 19 degrees if I wasn't moving about.

inappropriateraspberry · 28/10/2022 09:53

It's not on properly, as in timed to come on every day yet. We have put it on for an hour or so on the odd occasion - colder morning, kids rooms a bit cold in the evening and they're poorly etc.
Although we have underfloor heating in the lounge that has kicked in (separate thermostat) some mornings, but not for long.
Def doesn't need to be on full whack yet, pretty mild for this time of year.

Rexthesnail · 28/10/2022 09:55

@Afterfire I'm in the same boat, low income with myself and 2 disabled children. I've got mine set to 17. I have got warm knock off oodies and boot type slippers which help. I've actually got no heating right now as my boiler is broken and we're doing ok. Certainly couldn't run the electric heaters they've given us for the 4 days we've had no heating, my electric costs are ridiculous!

JaceLancs · 28/10/2022 09:57

No - we have a no heating until bonfire night rule - if it’s as warm as this it won’t go on then either

Most people would

DelilahBucket · 28/10/2022 10:37

@RampantIvy I am the person under a blanket with a hot water bottle most evenings, I always feel cold and struggle to get warm. Our house is neither cold nor draughty. There was nothing sneery about my comment. The house was only one degree colder than we have previously kept it at and she's never sat there in several layers and a coat before. The opposite in fact, she was complaining last winter it was too warm for her, and no she wasn't menopausal.
So you crack on judging people you don't know just because you need your house at 26 degrees to feel warm.
No one should be frozen at 19 degrees, even if you are not moving. If you are, there is something wrong with your thermostat and it isn't showing an accurate temperature or is in the wrong place in your house. Our old one we used to have set at two degrees higher than our new one. That was because it was old and not accurate.

woohoowoohoo · 27/10/2022 22:26

I don't need it but my last washing load smells musty after taking so long to dry so it's going on tomorrow to dry the washing

Try spreading it out more,
Turning over items midway through drying so the dampest side out.
Moving stuff from the middle of the airer to the outside
Not leaving in machine too long. (My bad habit)

But some houses are just too damp to dry washing. I used to make a tent with a sheet over an airer and tucking the sheet down the back of the radiator.

BlackeyedGruesome · 28/10/2022 10:50

I'm a little chilly today as I am feeling poorly. I might have to change out of the shorts and t shirt I have on due to the flat being too hot yesterday in the sunshine. Mum's house on the other hand is bloody freezing.

Doesn’t that mean that your heating is on all night, though? Maintaining the same heat as in the day? I couldn’t bear it. We’ve only had ours on overnight on about five occasions in the last twenty years. No wonder people’s bills are huge.

Applesandcarrots · 28/10/2022 11:00

I heat overnight, rarely during day. Everyone is different and I grew up with that.
Not to high temp but having it off would be too cold

uhtredbebbanburg · 28/10/2022 11:05

I’m in Scotland and we haven’t put the CH on yet because it’s pretty mild.

XAQ · 28/10/2022 11:07

Way too warm for heating. I'm always hot. Still haven't put my duvet back on my bed and have the windows open.

okapiokapi · 28/10/2022 11:10

We haven't had our heating on since the first week of March. With the cost of everything going up, the only way we can afford to buy heating oil for our house (no gas here) is to use much less. The minimum we can buy is 500 litres and it now cost over £500, whereas 18 months ago it was less than half of that. We're very rural and my husband starts work over 3 hours before the buses start running, so he drives and that has gone up from £80 a week (including one trip to the shops, each week) up to £100 and we don't go shopping now! We have no disposable income left as we go forward into autumn and winter, so we will not be putting our heating on at all.

Badger1970 · 28/10/2022 11:16

We've barely used ours, we're rural so have bulk LPG that's now 80p a litre (it was 17p when we bought the house) .... hence we are very very conservative with using it.

We've got used to coming home and putting a dressing gown on and sitting under a fleece blanket rather than using the heating. When it does get cold, we'll light the woodburner and keep one room warm.
