Not putting the heating on yet

We live in the south and I’m insisting we don’t put the heating on until it gets properly cold. It’s 15 degrees overnight at the moment!!!

DP disagrees and wants it on

have you put yours on yet?

I live in the south and it's been just too warm to put the heating on . A couple of evenings I put my Oodie on and had to take it off again as I was too hot

BooseysMom · 28/10/2022 05:52

We've had one frost and a few nights when it's been cool and damp. I put the heating on for the frosty morning, but otherwise, we haven't needed it.

Same here in the Midlands. The thermo hasn't dropped below 21 for the last few days & nights. We are in a heavily insulated new-build which helps, but it gets hot in the summer heatwaves which I dread.

User17956743 · 28/10/2022 06:10

I had mine on a couple of weeks ago but not got it on at the moment as it is very mild, no doubt it will be back on next week

NessieMcNessface · 28/10/2022 07:02

My partner always wants the heating on as soon as the weather gets even the slightest bit colder. I’ve finally persuaded him into wearing thermal vests which has made a great difference. I also bought heated throws which we have on a low setting and are lovely for when we’re sitting watching TV at night. So, as yet no heating needed; we are in the South.

OldSpeclkledHen · 28/10/2022 07:09

It's far to bloody hot to put the heating on!

Rockbird · 28/10/2022 07:14

No not once but we're in the south east and it was 22 degrees yesterday. It hasn't been even close to cold enough yet.

housemaus · 28/10/2022 07:17

Not yet - it's really mild! There've been a few evenings where it was slightly chilly downstairs but nothing the sofa blanket and a hot water bottle couldn't handle. We've kept the window open in our bedroom every night so far, once that needs closing it'll be heating time.

The amount of threads similar to this are painful tbh.
just make a choice, no one needs to be thinking you’re a hero for not heating you’re home yet

YABU for starting yet another thread about heating.
Yes, it has been a mild autumn so far.
Mumsnet is full of summer haters so it is a foregone conclusion that no-one would have their heating on.

On another thread a poster is smug about not having her heating on them says she has had her log burner on several times a week 🤐

Nosleepforthismum · 28/10/2022 07:27

South West and no heating on yet! It’s been a mild October so far and I’m enjoying pissing off Octopus who keep wildly overestimating our energy usage each month.

BaileySharp · 28/10/2022 07:55

We're not finding it too cold yet, but our house is quite warm. The only thing tempting us is drying clothes more easily

rainbowandglitter · 28/10/2022 08:12

Nowhere near. All our windows are open throughout the day. We're going out in the day in shorts and t shirts still.

Divebar2021 · 28/10/2022 08:20

Why do you get to control the thermostat OP? The fact that other MN don’t need the heating on yet is going to depend on where in the country they are and how insulated their homes are. A flat in a block is going to be generally hotter than an old draughty house with high ceilings.

LT2 · 28/10/2022 08:27

My baby and I are still getting too warm at night with the heating off! It's around 20/21 degrees when we go to bed. East anglia.

MissyB1 · 28/10/2022 08:28

Although it’s been very mild here (south west), I have noticed the house feels chiller than outside! Also trying to get washing dry is getting trickier. House might also start to smell damp soon. Planning on putting the heating on probably in the next couple of weeks. It’s only ever on 2 hours in the morning and 4 hours in the evening, and yes we do use the thermostat! You can use a thermostat and set timings (lots of mumsnet don’t seem to get that).

Sagittarius25 · 28/10/2022 08:42

I still struggle to understand this whole turning heating 'on' in winter and 'off' in summer. We never switch our heating 'off' all year but have a thermostat - so from about Apr/May to sept/oct depending on temps it just never comes on??

We also have a setting to turn heating on to prevent pipes freezing (about 10c) but this has never happened. Our heating has already clicked on a few times this autumn, dependant on the temperatures in the house. It doesn't come on everyday, especially recently with the mild temps. Some days it has only come on for 30 mins to bring the house back to temperature.

I'd rather short periods like this compared to waiting until Nov of Dec to turn it 'on' to help prevent a dampness in the house.

RoseMartha · 28/10/2022 08:47

Not yet also in the south.

It was 23 in my room last night I had to open the window. I live in a middle flat which I think makes a difference.

OoooSweetChildOMine · 28/10/2022 08:49

I have all my windows open currently!

RampantIvy · 28/10/2022 08:51

I'm with you @Sagittarius25. We have a thermostat in the living room, and thermostats on our radiators, so we don't "turn the heating on/off" the thermostat does it for us. We also have frost control so it comes on at night at a very low temperature if it is several degrees below zero.

Where is it warm enough for shorts and T-shirts? I put my shorts away weeks ago. The forecast for today is 15 degrees and wet, and 14 degrees tomorrow

We have a room thermostat and thermostatic radiator valves, but we still turn the heating controls to ‘off’ in the spring when we don’t need it on at all any more. It has a frost guard setting which would ensure that nothing could freeze, especially as the boiler is in our garage. But I can’t see the point of not taking some control of the system yourself. Once we turn it back on for the winter, the stats and the timer will take care of it. But we do only have the heating timed to be on for two hours each morning and evening - unless it’s very cold outside we don’t need more than that, and it would be wasteful to have it clicking on and off during the day - and especially at night, when we never heat the house except in the bitterest of weather.

This is something that is individual to homes, families and heating systems, so there’s no right way to do it. Just whatever suits you.

It’s wet here today, but yesterday I was in Bristol and it was 19C in the afternoon, and yes, I saw people in shorts. I had a long walk back to my car and was a bit too warm in my jeans!

RightsHoarder · 28/10/2022 09:04

No, but we have a bet every year that we won't put it on until November. Shouldn't be too hard this year, it's really mild.

Nowheretoogo · 28/10/2022 09:09

Our house doesn’t get much sun so it’s been on for half an hour morning/evening because it’s starting to smell musty, despite opening windows and using a dehumidifier.

I see people out in shorts daily - we're on the Cumbrian coast. Not quite shirts weather for me but I'd happily wear a t-shirt and leggings to work (I'm a dog walker) if I knew I wasn't going to get rained on. Most days this week it's been 16-18 degrees and generally sunny.

My car was saying 12 degrees earlier but it felt much warmer - it certainly wasn't cold by any means.

Mooloolabababy · 28/10/2022 09:14

woohoowoohoo · 27/10/2022 22:26

I don't need it but my last washing load smells musty after taking so long to dry so it's going on tomorrow to dry the washing

Yep same here, just come back from a mini holiday and have washing coming out of my ears! It's not cold enough to put the heating on but it's been non stop rain for the last few days so can't hang washing out, will have to put the heating on to get my washing dried!

RampantIvy · 28/10/2022 09:14

That's too cold for shorts for me. I need at least 22 degrees.

It is currently pouring with rain here in Yorkshire. However, our reservoirs need it.
