To think people should move to the left lane when not overtaking on the motorway?

I’ve been doing a lot of motorway driving recently and have noticed that so many drivers to not move over when they can. On a 4 lane stretch of the M25 today, there was a driver doing 50 in the third lane - massive gap in the second lane - it caused chaos - why not just move over?

Your thread title shows why its a problem. "To think people should move..." um, its not about thinking, its about people not following the highway code. Your title makes it seem its an option 😉

I would love it if there was more government adverts and enforcement but unfortunately we are still seeing drunk drivers on the roads killing innocent people, so I'm not quite sure what the answer is. Public flogging maybe?

The solution is obvious - an army of illiterate, nosey, self righteous dickheads with dash cam, reporting everything they believe has transgressed their personal highway code.

MavisChunch29 · 26/10/2022 15:18

There's enough to report contravening the actual Highway Code to bother with anyone's personal code. And I'd only report dangerous driving like tailgating, excess speed or other aggressive/bullying driving.

There is plenty of that to be going on with.

Revolvingwhore · 26/10/2022 15:21

Get your dash cams set up, put your driving gloves on and get driving well below the speed limit. The minute you encounter someone who is annoyed at what a price you are, you can report it.

Squirelnutkins · 26/10/2022 15:24

@Revolvingwhore Sorry to disappoint but it works. May be you'll think twice knowing people like me are watching you.

@Revolvingwhore

You really need to take a deep breath and calm down.

You shouldn't be on the roads with such rage

😇

It doesn't matter if they report it, if you are doing nothing wrong or very minor the police/courts won't do anything.

You are taking this all out of proportion, I hope you won't be driving later as you are displaying an awful lot of anger right now Confused

Surely not an Audi driver, tailgating and bullying other drivers! 😅

BIWI · 26/10/2022 15:50

Tailgating is inevitable when idiots wander across into your lane without looking to see what's fast approaching

No.

It's your responsibility, as the driver behind, to be alert to the traffic in front of you. If someone does pull out, then you brake until you're keeping a safe distance behind them. You don't tailgate them. You don't flash them to show your annoyance. You wait till they've moved back into the next lane before you speed up again to overtake.

How hard can it be to drive responsibly and carefully?!

Squirelnutkins · 26/10/2022 15:57

@MavisChunch29 Yep, 😂

Mind you one thing I defiantly noticed is that since I upgraded from an old little 1.3ltr Hyundai I10, to a lot newer bigger hybrid car the way I get aggressively treated by tailgaters and German car owners especially has decreased substantially. My driving has not changed, all I can fathom Is the perceived snobbery on the road, it is often accompanied by silly speeds and thinking the roads are built just for them.

There is a deep seated principle here. People shouldn't be policing each other, and shouldn't be so arrogant to think they are the arbitrators of the code. I aren't interested in what anybody else is doing as long as they're not making me have to change my speed or brake. People need to mind their own business and not just on the road.

BIWI · 26/10/2022 16:02

Hah! And you accuse other posters of arrogance! Grin

Revolvingwhore · 26/10/2022 16:04

Where is the arrogance there? I am driving perfectly safely, and am not interested in what others are doing. Just drive in the right lane.

The Highway Code is very clear that you must make sure you are not pulling out into traffic moving faster than you.

By reporting footage to* *nextbase.co.uk/national-dash-cam-safety-portal/
The police decide if there is an offence to action, if there is not you will never know, so what is your issue if you are not breaking the law.

No one has suggested that they are policing each other, we are stating as fact if we feel intimidated or we witness aggressive or unsafe driving we have a right to highlight it. If you are not a shit driver then you have nothing to worry about and you will never know some one submitted video footage of you, simples. 🤗

Revolvingwhore · 26/10/2022 16:11

It's absolutely nothing to do with you. How on earth do you have the time to start every journey with setting up dash cams? Just plain weird to be so invested in other people's behaviour. You really can't have much going on

MavisChunch29 · 26/10/2022 16:12

Yes, I get tail gated more in my smaller car- it's not that small, or one that is often driven by older drivers, but still. And sometimes people are desperate to overtake the seven seater on the motorway, ironically, is it is pretty nippy.

Revolvingwhore · 26/10/2022 16:13

I maintain that those who drive with dash cams are desperate for confrontation and wilfully drive well below the limit, fishing.

InMySpareTime · 26/10/2022 16:15

If cars are in Lane 3 with lanes 1 and 2 clear, it's actually perfectly legal to pass them in Lane 1. The only prohibition is passing them in the lane immediately to their left. If you leave a clear lane between you and them you're fine. I mean, the Lane 3 hoggers are still wankers but you're fine legally and well past them.

MavisChunch29 · 26/10/2022 16:16

You don't need to set up anything, it's all automatic. Loads of drivers have them, it's a back-up against attempted insurance fraud as much as anything. So smile, and drive well, you're on camera.

Let me give you a little secret, I got to my car with my keyfob. Start my car and drive.

All my dashcams are hard wired, they provide parking protection from people hitting my car in carparks and driving off, they need zero setting up. If i witness and idiot on the road, I just download the footage onto my phone and submit it online when I finish driving. Not hard really.

Just plain weird to be so invested in other people's behaviour.
Because if they drive like idiots and I ignore it, any accident they cause may affect me or someone I know or even someone innocent and if I could have stopped it that makes me a better citizen than some one who blindly refuses to ignore it.

But if you feel it oppresses you deal with it. Because thousands of people upload dash cam footage daily and it only increases every year and it makes the roads a safer place for all of us.

The thread was about annoying drivers hogging/dithering. Not videos of Audi's or any other drivers whizzing in and out of traffic dangerously.
Your comparison isn't equal really, is it?
