To think people should move to the left lane when not overtaking on the motorway?

I’ve been doing a lot of motorway driving recently and have noticed that so many drivers to not move over when they can. On a 4 lane stretch of the M25 today, there was a driver doing 50 in the third lane - massive gap in the second lane - it caused chaos - why not just move over?

That is undertaking still. According to the Highway Code you should not pass on the left, unless it’s slow moving traffic, even if you’re already in the left hand lane:
“Do not overtake on the left or move to a lane on your left to overtake.”

That said, with drivers going at 50mph in the middle lane, I will definitely pass them wherever I feel is safe.

Yes I know, I corrected myself.

nootsy · 25/10/2022 18:52

I don't see many middle lane hoggers. I find people just sit in the overtaking lane & never move until a fast car goes up their arse.

*live. I am not having a good day!

Sorry! Was posting when you updated.

Think we can definitely agree that middle lane hoggers have a place in hell specially designed for them, where people over and undertake them for all eternity.

sanityisamyth · 25/10/2022 18:53

Middle Lane drivers do my head in. They're inconsiderate twats.

sanityisamyth · 25/10/2022 18:54

lentilly · 25/10/2022 18:30

I don't drive but could you not all leave them to it crawling along in their lane and use the two inside ones? Sounds annoying.

That's undertaking which is against the Highway Code.

Hellohah · 25/10/2022 18:55

This really grinds my goat as well.
I'm with a PP's husband who wants to proper clamp down.
The other thing I hate is near me there are 2 roads which run parallel to each other. One is a 30mph, the other a 50mph.
You always get some idiot driving 30 down the 50, if you want to do 30 mate drive on the other fucking road.

Argh ... this is why I don't drive a lot, because I get serious road rage 😂🤦🏻‍♀️

HangOnToYourself · 25/10/2022 18:57

They are just shit drivers. It really does piss me off as it can cause other drivers to drive more dangerously and they just people along at 50.

I do also have the constant drama trying to explain to my bloody mother what middle lane hogging is, she doesnt drive and starts screeching at me that I'm breaking the law when I move into the middle lane, she cant seem to grasp that you can in fact drive in the middle lane of you are overtaking 🤦‍♀️

ElrondsEars · 25/10/2022 19:06

YANBU - people just don’t because they’re oblivious, selfish arseholes - it shows in behaviours everywhere so much more now.

I also don’t think it helps that motorway driving isn’t part of learning to drive and passing your test - it’s utterly ridiculous…

WonderingWanda · 25/10/2022 19:17

Agree. Also if you are going to overtake can you please do it a bit quicker than than 1mph faster than the vehicle you are overtaking please.

Anotherguy · 25/10/2022 19:20

lane hogging is a specific offence and carries a £100 fine with 3 penalty points, it’s rarely enforced though, it only became an offence in 2015 from memory.

normally I flash my lights to get them to pull over, it sometimes works sometimes doesn’t

lion71 · 25/10/2022 19:23

That's like saying you expect people to stop on a red light.

Northernlurker · 25/10/2022 19:38

Undertaking is dangerous and obnoxious. It also delays people moving out of the middle lane because they are likely to check their mirrors and see mumsnet wankers bursting up the inside. Meaning they can't move in. I loathe Lane hoggers and undertakers equally. Both need to go back to driving school.

Squirelnutkins · 25/10/2022 18:39

As some one who drives on the motorway as part of there job, lorry's and wagons that pullout from the inside lane with little to no warning forcing cars to make emergency lane changes is a bigger issue I see it every day. May be some people try avoid that.

Yes I agree! This happens pretty much every time I’m on the motorway. The joys of the M5 and M6!

browneyes77 · 25/10/2022 19:51

ExtraOnions · 25/10/2022 18:42

I call it the “elephant parade” of lorries … with 2 lanes being used by lorries, as one is going 2mph faster than the other.

Not forgetting the other lorry drivers trick of driving so close to each other in the slow lane, that you can’t move over to exit

… and pulling into your lane, regardless of where you are

This. This drives me absolutely insane!!!

Tara336 · 25/10/2022 19:52

I drive regularly on motorways. It drives me bloody insane with the oblivious idiots who sit in the outside and middle lane doing 60 which block you from overtaking correctly. They then realise eventually that you are going to undertake them so you can get where you need to be sometime this century and they speed up! Every bloody time! Why?? Why can you not pootle at your chosen speed in the correct DRIVING lane. It is always one of three types middle aged men with one arm resting on the door, younger men in a battered car with loads of parcels filling the back or a young girl in a car that has about as much power as my hairdryer. I think I spend too much time on motorways.

AnotherMalbecPlease · 25/10/2022 20:40

I never used to undertake but now I do it regularly - I often pull out into the 4th lane and then can move safely into the inside lane - the lane hoggers seem to be oblivious - I tried flashing today and some glares but no - they just potter along - I do wish there was some way to educate them

OP posts:
Devoutspoken · 25/10/2022 20:43

Did it cause chaos or did it just annoy some people?

AnotherMalbecPlease · 26/10/2022 05:28

Yes it does cause chaos - all the traffic behind them bunch up

OP posts:
RainbowsMoonbeams · 26/10/2022 05:33

The 6% who voted YABU are the middle lane warriors you talk about OP 😁

One of my pet hates too.

Remaker · 26/10/2022 05:35

I think it’s often less confident drivers who do it. They’re worried they’ll accidentally end up in an exit lane or they don’t like overtaking lorries so they sit in the lane that feels ‘safest’. Doesn’t excuse it.

Lorries are an absolute menace too, wish they could just have their own dedicated lane.

ArcticSkewer · 26/10/2022 05:40

I usually undertake in the left hand lane, leaving a clear lane between me and the person in the 3rd lane going at 50. Cba going into the 4th lane to overtake on a clear road. It doesn't stop them moving across into the 2nd lane should they suddenly notice they are 2 lanes too far across.
I think on smart motorways noone wants to use the first lane. Probably sensible really.

AnotherMalbecPlease · 26/10/2022 05:50

I’ve just googled it and it is an offence and can be given an on the spot fine of £100

OP posts:
MavisChunch29 · 26/10/2022 05:51

Yes, except when there is one lane/two lanes solid lorries on the left, no-one wants to be stuck at <60mph with poor visibilty of forthcoming road signs and junctions. Or when you are in the middle due to following signage- either following directions, lanes closed etc. Or when the motorway is very busy/queuing and changing lanes is dangerous and should be done at a minimum.

Also overtaking without breaking the speed limit can take 30 seconds or so before you pull in again safely. Just saying this for the benefit of Audi drivers, driving up one's arse with headlights flashing. You'll have to fucking wait, I'm not going to get a speeding ticket, levitate out of the way or crash into the vehicle in the next lane for your benefit.

ChangingStates · 26/10/2022 06:04

Middle Lane hoggers give me the rage- as do drivers who have no idea about keeping a safe distance and drive way too close to the car in front. Am so glad I don’t do as much motorway driving as I used to.

aramox1 · 26/10/2022 06:07

Not defending middle lane hogging but on the roads I drive on the left lane is full of 50 mph pootlers and both lanes are so full it's really hard to overtake and get back in.
