To think people should move to the left lane when not overtaking on the motorway?

I’ve been doing a lot of motorway driving recently and have noticed that so many drivers to not move over when they can. On a 4 lane stretch of the M25 today, there was a driver doing 50 in the third lane - massive gap in the second lane - it caused chaos - why not just move over?

So where in the Highway code does it say your allowed to break the speed limit?

Revolvingwhore · 26/10/2022 17:11

You are more interested, clearly, in catching other drivers out than driving properly.

TeresaCrowd · 26/10/2022 17:12

You should not change lanes if it would cause someone else to have to take evasive action such as them having to change lanes or sharply brake, you need to slow down and wait for a suitable gap, whether you think they are going 'too fast' is irrelevant, as it will still be you with your car wedged in the central reservation if they can't stop. If you are going to force your way out the least you could do is floor it, deffo don't bimble out in your 1l eco Jazz onto the M1. I wish that motorway driving was compulsory on the driving test, it's almost like it needs to be two stage, so the current test gets you access to the more complicated stuff test and once you've passed that can you drive, simply because i don't think current learners should be on the motorway either. Motorway driving is about 75% knowing what's going on behind you anyway. If you wait til you need to change lanes to check your mirrors you've left it too late. The pre-move mirror check should be like a bonus idiot check. Measure twice, cut once and all that!

And your more interested in hogging the outside lane at breakneck speed, getting pissy when people hold you up or report you.

RedAppleGirl · 26/10/2022 17:12

Squirelnutkins · 26/10/2022 17:05

How do you join the motorway or change lanes then, or should we all wait until the outside lane has no traffic at all?

www.highwaycodeuk.co.uk/using-the-road-overtaking.html
Move quickly past the vehicle you are overtaking, once you have started to overtake.
Joining the motorway.
Check the traffic on the motorway and match your speed to fit safely into the traffic flow in the left-hand lane

Key terms are quickly and match speed. The implication being it is not safe to not do those 2 things.

Revolvingwhore · 26/10/2022 17:14

I cannot cope with your use of 'your'. My point is you're not in the right. The difference is I don't judge others because I do speed occasionally. I admit that I don't always follow the Code, you're not even aware you're also I'm contravention of it.

Oh right so when the police pull you over your defense is the car in front was doing 90, so I was too as is states match the speed in the Highway code. 😂

Squirelnutkins · 26/10/2022 17:17

@Revolvingwhore As I have said multiple times, I submit lots of dashcam footage and the police view all of it. As part of this they not only asses how the other person drives but the person whom submitted the footage and they have never once mentioned to me about my driving. So I guess they have no issue with how I drive 😄

Yes indeed name changed from Squirelnutkins to Strawman.
That scenario only exists inside your head.

RaininginDarling · 26/10/2022 17:20

Are they not the same people who drive 40mph on 60/30mph roads and get confused at right of way at roundabouts?

I do agree. I do not understand sitting in the middle lane. 😒

Well its been fun but I'm off out in my car to record more people to upload on to the police driving portal!

😄

pats @Revolvingwhore on the head and offers a sweetie. Think your blood sugar is a bit low

People should just move back to the left, its not that difficult.

Tara336 · 26/10/2022 17:39

I wondered how long it would be until German car drivers got dragged into it. Obviously no other make of cars drives like twats 🙄🤣.

nogginatemycat · 26/10/2022 17:47

@Tara336 True but it is mostly German car drivers.

Tara336 · 26/10/2022 17:56

@nogginatemycat it's pretty much all makes in my experience, I think people notice it more with German cars because they expect it or are a bit biased. I should imagine there's also more German cars on the road then other makes as well. I've seen some pretty horrendous driving from Volvo drivers but maybe I notice them and I'm biased. No I don't drive a German car BTW 😌

Soproudoflionesses · 26/10/2022 18:12

I was in the M25 today and had this exact conversation with my dh!

AnotherMalbecPlease · 26/10/2022 18:19

Oh dear - I seem to have ignited a fire I wasn’t intending to - I want to make it clear that the thing I was referring to in my initial post was those who are pottering long in the 2/3 lane with a massive gap in the first lane and not moving over - the traffic wasn’t too bad yesterday - yes, there were lorries side by side but they weren’t the problem - it was steadfast refusal of some
to move over when the lane to the left of them was totally clear, and don’t realise that it causes bunching up of traffic behind them - if everyone drives as they should the traffic would move so much smoother- I do break the speed limit slightly when overtaking - just so I can get past other card and move back into the available left lane

@mummybearcub2022 please tell me you dont actually drive?

I do I'm afraid :(

Luckydip1 · 26/10/2022 19:01

Often you have slow cars driving at 50 with gaps of a couple of hundred meters between them and then a steady flow of people doing 70 in the middle lane so if you do drive correctly and keep going back into the slow lane it takes ages to get back into the middle lane so you may as well stay in the middle lane. If anyones not happy with people hogging the middle lane then tough they shouldn't be going over the speed limit!

you haven't answered my question

OnomatopoeiaFlea · 26/10/2022 21:45

Is your question seriously ‘am I being unreasonable for wanting people to follow the highway code’

what on earth makes you think anyone would find this unreasonable?

Galaktoboureko · 26/10/2022 22:23

meateatingveggie · 25/10/2022 18:24

I agree. I'd also make all lorries stay in the inside lane because they cause chaos driving parallel to each other.

So how would they overtake one of those muppets that drive at 48mph or a slow moving wide load with escort vehicles?

People love to moan about lorries but they don't tend to love it when the shops run out of toilet paper or the garages run out of petrol due to delayed deliveries.

bakebeans · 26/10/2022 23:10

That's what they are meant to do! Lanes 2/3 and more are overtaking lanes.
you should only undertake if absolutely necessary and you cannot get into the other lanes to do so.

this is why the police have started clamping down on the middle lane hogger

WalkingOnTheCracks · 25/11/2022 08:48

@balalake

The return of traffic police would be another step forward, and the courts not being allowed to be swayed by bleeding heart stories from those who commit motoring crimes.

Could you give an example or two of courts being swayed by bleeding heart stories from those who commit motoring offences such as middle-lane hogging?
