'This is not democracy'.

Shout all the Labour supporters who are against PR and get a huge benefit from Parliamentary Democracy and will probably get a huge majority and therefore ability change our system when a GE is finally called.

I take it electoral reform is top of the agenda for the manifesto then.

Or not.

I won't hold my breathe.

Labour literally just voted support PR at conference.

Think what you like. I think his relative who says he's racist can assess that better than you. As far as I'm concerned if someone says that someone English born isn't English on the basis of their ethnicity they're a racist.

I know your posts and know you look for division, so yes, I will think what I like.

The only thing we can hope for is that he will look after the country's finances as well as he has looked after his own and his wife's.

He's printed half a trillion pounds and funded healthy people to sit on their arses at home. I don't think he gave a shit about the state of the economy.

The government is incompetent and corrupt. That is a more than valid reason for calling for a general election.

The leadership farce is just another proof of incompetenc.

Hahahaha!

So how often would you change a government you thought were useless?

Once a year? Every month?

Labour hardly has an unblemished record. Or good leaders. Corbyn for example?

Do stop whining about an election.
Any government has 5 years.
You will get your chance to vote all in good time.

@Stars71 FIL is racist but DH isn’t. Also, FIL refuses to use the word British. It’s English or nothing.

Have you ever pointed out to him that there is only one official nationality in the UK - British?

Hence its in our passports.

English, Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish are regional identities within the UK and umbrella of Britishness.

Fucking hell. The lack of insight involved in calling someone a ‘silly bitch’ because they’re the wrong kind of feminist for you.

Wrong Type of Feminist! Is that the type of feminist who thinks men should run rape centres and that should be allowed to enter women's sports-the type of feminist who won't even define what a woman is for fear of upsetting men? That type of feminist.

The equivalent of a vegetarian who eats meat.

That type of feminist

LucilleBallsy · 24/10/2022 15:05

Oh and Beer Korma won't say if he thinks Eddie Izzard is a woman.

So edifying to see so many people explaining that we live in a parliamentary democracy and you don't vote for the PM etc.

WE KNOW.

Doesn't mean people can't object to this or want change.

Personally I think it's bollocks to say people vote for the party not the leader. Imagine the rage if people voted in say Keir Starmer and after a bit he resigned in favour of Jeremy Corbyn?

I'd be incandescent about that, but it would be perfectly legal and possible. Sir Keir could stand down at any point and the Labour Party could vote in another MP to take over as Leader of the Labour Party. As I've already pointed they did it when Tony Blair resigned and Gordon Brown took over. He was the only leadership candidate so he was elected unopposed well before a general election. Sounds familiar?

FrankieStein403 · 24/10/2022 15:06

>plus it would be more instability.

Why on earth would the party that has been an examplar of chaos and instability change its spots and suddenly provide stability?

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 24/10/2022 15:06

RishyWashy · 24/10/2022 14:47

It's not democracy for the Tory membership. Rishi got behind pushing Boris out and he still didn't win the leadership race. So they had another go, getting Liz out, until they got the leadership they wanted. There's no point having a Tory membership ballot if that is then overridden when the Tories don't like the result of that. It's better not to have a membership vote at all if that's the case. That isn't democracy.

Agree. And see the Conservatives saying BJ has the mandate.

The annexation of Crimea was achieved through a vote, a democratic choice, but of course the west don't see it as such.

The Coronation of a King and the Coronation of a PM, democracy in action.

I hope not to be wrong on this but out of all the contenders (and Starmer) he appears to be the most qualified to get the country out of a financial mess. I can’t see that there’s anyone else that has the same level of understanding of economics and finance.

There wasn’t much that he could have done differently during COVID as our NHS has been struggling so badly for such a long time. It could have collapsed entirely if people hadn’t been made to stay at home.

Nobody has the ability to take on the role and make things better for everybody, despite what Keri Starmer would have us believe. We can’t just tax the hell out of those with the most money to help everybody with less as we’ll end up losing out in the long term when big business don’t want to invest in this country. I’m by no means a high earner but have dabbled in the relative basics of economics when I did my degree and I can appreciate how difficult a task it’s going to be.

The important thing now is having someone take the reigns and get some stability back as it’s descended into a farce over the past few months.

JoinedForThisPost · 24/10/2022 15:07

Also, if I had to pick something to be enraged about in picking new leaders, it would be this, not elected MPs voting for a leader:

He’s a prize cunt Gaspode and we haven’t spent Christmas with him for the last 20 years. And Yes, he would see you as forrin once he’s rebuilt Hadrians wall. Oddly, he’s ended up with no friends in his twilight years as they’ve all told him to fuck right off.

I do think that 3 Prime Ministers in 7 weeks = General Election.

It screams GE, really.

Yes it’s amazing how many people think this is all fine and dandy - quite worrying really! So I wonder this time next year if we’ve changed PMs a couple more times again, will they still be insisting it’s totally democratic?

Longerthanfiveweeks · 24/10/2022 15:08

I believe in democracy, this isn't it

We don’t have a Presidential system. We are ruled by the elected Government.

Liz Truss acted in bad faith within this system by taking the Government in a wildly different direction from that it was elected to deliver. This rightly backfired on her and she has been dismissed.

I am glad we don’t have a Presidential system. I don’t want GE that pretends we have and will move us further in that direction.

You're not seriously trying to compare the vote in the Crimea, organised by the Russian state and quite obviously rigged, with Tory MPs electing the sole candidate for the leadership unopposed?

Jux · 24/10/2022 15:10

ShadowOnTheStair

Yes, silly bitch but which of them admit to knowing what a woman is atm? Apart from the Tories and I wouldn't be surprised to see them turning away from that now that Boris and Truss have gone and if they find themselves facing a GE, which will happen not too far away.

So I would still rather have YC in charge of Labour - there's a tiny chance that once there, with a bit of power behind her, she'll realise that of course she knows.

MultiTulip · 24/10/2022 15:01

I don't think you can claim that a person who can't even define a woman is a feminist.

Not that I approve of anyone calling her a silly bitch.

But it is alarming the ease with which the Labour Party would erase women's rights. Sir Keir Starmer thinks 0.01 % of men are actually women, he said so this morning.

If someone is well off, why should they be ashamed of that unless they made their money by gun running, people smuggling or some such?

Should Sunak be donning the political equivalent of sack cloth and ashes for the heinous crime of being wealthy? Should he be giving it all away and living in poverty for the look of the thing? OK, he quite probably doesn’t have to shop in Aldi and doesn’t live like “ordinary people” but does that exclude him from being PM?

Stars71 · 24/10/2022 15:10

@Stars71 FIL is racist but DH isn’t. Also, FIL refuses to use the word British. It’s English or nothing.

The Labour Party is anti women, and anti Jewish, so I will, therefore, take Labour voters, calling racism, with a pinch of salt.

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 24/10/2022 15:10

@Lightningrain

He fucking caused the financial mess. Firstly by suddenly finding his moral compass that was obviously lost when BJ was doing all the previous unethical/illegal things, in order to become PM, a vote which he lost and LT then created the chaos.

Plus the printing of money like it was confetti and no checks on bounce back loans PPE etc.
